yesterday. The nomination was by bal

an animated one, all the candidates and
their friends working with the utmost as

could hear, the election was conducted
with the utmost fairness. We are nna-

SwlatMp* Outlines of History.
From Captain R. E. Fark, general agent
far the great school-book publishing firm
of Ivison. Blakeman, Taylor A Co., of
New A ork and Chicago, we have a copv
of tho outlines of the World’s History,
by William S win ton. Tho book is pro-
pored with a special reference to school-
purpose*; hut we find it to be an admi
rable condensation of history, that eanbe
preserved by the general reader with tho
highest satisfaction. We hare never
seen more history condensed into 498
page* than we find in the volume before
us. It is rich with the record of the
world's growth, its experiments in govern-
sioit, its philosophy, its science, its art,
architecture and its general development.
While its points are condensed to the
narrowest practicable space, the author
still makes himself so perfectly under
stood that the reader lays the book down
with a feeling of satisfaction with what
be baa learned, and not with disappoint*
m«»d at the meagrenaa* of th* text.
Toe history opens with an account of
the ancient Oriental monarchies, proceeds
with these of the middle ages and comes
on down to the day in which we live.
All the salient points of the history of all
than* notions is crowded into these pages.

Tho survey will begin at tho shoals above

Tho work is a grand one, and we would

men will see Col. Frobol and consult with

man, who has studied the question of
improving our water oourses, and can
satisfy any intelligent community of the
immeasurable advantages to be gained
therefrom.
When the improvement of tho Oosta-
naula was first advocated, it was esti
mated that it wonld cost $200,000 to
mako tho stream navigable to Carter’s
landing, ono hundred miles above Rome.
Tho Col. mado a survey of tho stream
and estimated that it wonld cost $12,-

body thought tho estimate was fpr below
what wonld ho actually needed to carry
ont tho design; but Col. Frobol took
tho appropriation of $12,000, mado all
tho improvements, and now boats rnnthe

appropriation still unexpended. ; -r r

Miss Jessie Berndhas hardly an equal of

and Mr. Arthur Wood are masters of the

most promising one, and we think it will
attract a large audience to Harmonic

Office of the Masonic Relief

Norfolk, November
To the Holders of Tickets to the Grand Gift
Concert of the Masonic Relief Asssocicv-
lion of Norfolk, Va.:
Tho Board of Directors of this Asso
ciation, feeling assured that the patrons
of their enterprise and the public gener
ally are satisfied that in its management
tho interests of all concerned will be
strictly guarded, with honesty and fair
ness ; and relying upon the belief that all
who have aided us in our effort to com
plete the Masonic Temple in this city,
are willing to rely upon our judgment as
to the expediency of another postpone
ment for a few days, notwithstanding our
announcement that the concert would
positively he given on the 19th inst.,
have decided that a short delay will he
more satisfactory to all holders of tickets
than to have a partial drawing on Thurs
day next.
The following reasons have induced us
to this action:
First—While our receipts have been
large, they have not been of sufficient
amount to enable U3 to give a full draw
ing.
Second—A drawing on the 19th instant,
would not yield enough to accomplish the
object for which our Association was or
ganized and chartered; and.
Third—The encouragement which we
have received convinces us that in forty
days more we shall, without any failure,
give a drawing which in its results will
bo acceptable to all our friends.
We have therefore fixed upon
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29tH,
as the day when the Concert and distri
bution will take place, whether all the
tickets are sold or not, or the money will
be refunded upon application and pre
sentation of the tickets at the Agency
where purchased.
