Q .it* a Bfrera hurricane passed over
Talbot county Wednvaday evening, doing
considerable damage. It paeaed very
n-ar'.y along the tr..ek of the cyclone of

An Ordinance.
We call attention to an ordinance
lately passed by the City Council, which
>• pub*..lied elsewhere. It will be seen
at one* that it is a very important one,
and is designed to suppress the promis
cuous cow-stealing which has been so
troublesome to the people. It he« gotten
to be as much as a cow is worth to torn
her loose to grate, and the authorities
fi-,-1 compelled to do something for the
relief of the people.
■ udden Meath*.
Day before yesterday a colored man
name ! Miles died suddenly in Unionvilie.
He was walking in front of his house and
fell. His wife ran to him at once and
found him dead.
Thn wife of Nelson, a colored peannt
vender, who doea business at 'he lower
end of thn passenger depot, fell dead in
her yard yesterday afternoon. She bod
)K-en in good health up to the very time
of her demise. The causa of her death is
unknown.
Kale of the Academy Square.
Public attention will be attracted to
the sale advertised by Col. Whittle, to
take place on Saturday, the 8th April
next, of the Bibb County Academy
Sq uire, Inid off in six large buildinglots,
among tho most eligible and conven
iently situated for residence in the whole
State.
This is another step in tho direction
indicated by us about a year ago. With
the accumulated Bibb County Academy
fund and the proceeds of this sale, it is
hoped to establish and carry on a high
school for boya in the city of Macon;
and tho design is, so soon as this can be
accomplished, to change the Alexander
free school into a high school for girls—
in this way supplying advanced educa
tional facilities free of all cost to pupils
of both sexes, and instructing the public
schools to rudimentnl branches. By this
method, it is hoped, to perfect a gonerous
and complete system of publio school ed-
lie revenue.
The ssle sf Fertilizers and Its Freb.
able Results.
MdiUrn Telegraph and Messenger:
Probably few, if any of the dealers in
commercial fertilizers are aware—nnder
the prevent ruinous inducements offered
the planters to buy this article—of the
purpose for which it is u-<?d. A fanner
comes to town, knowing that the only
thing he can bny on credit is gnano, pay
able in cotton at 15 cents after it is made
next fall. He buys, and for what ? Not
( vith a few except iona) to enrich his liinda,
but to sell to his neighbors and others at
from $15 to $20 per ton for cash, in order
to have a little money to get what he
cannot buy on time, overlooking the fact
that a day of reckoning mnst come, and
that paying $70 for $20, even in cotton at
15 cents, is bound to result in bis ruin,
if paid al all. The result will be that as
soon as the crop matures and is ready for
market he will, fearing all kinds of legal
processes to force the payment of his
gunno obligations, pend his cotton to an
other market, to be sold on arrival, pock
et the money and leave his obligations
for future consideration. The receipts
of Macon instead of falling short over
20.000 bales, as it has done this season
will be nearer double that amount, and
our dealers in fertilizers will have to
Buffer as well as trade generally by the
loss of this cotton and the trade it brings.
As long as this continues no currency
bills, conventions, political changes or
Anything else will relieve the country of

■ t. Patrick's Day.
To-day U set apart in the Irishman's
calendar ns sacred to the memory of
Patrick, Saint of Ireland, a man who,
in bis day, did good unto his people, and
by liis wonderful ministry blessed them
an 1 reclaimed them to Christianity. He
made a nation of Christians of a nation
of infidels, and iu honor thereof this day
has been consecrated to his memory, and
1 riah people, and the descendants of Irish
people, tho world over, regard it with the
highest veneration. It is the day they
celebrate, and when they display conspic
uously the green and the shamrock, mem
ory bears them back to Old Ireland, which
lias, instead of tho land of song, become
ti.e land of Borrows, whose sons are trod
den under foot, and whose daughters have
huug their harps upon the willow, and
sing no more the songs that were sung
in days gone by, when Ireland stood up
in her magesty a queen among the na
tions of tho oarth.
lint that was centuries ago—six cen
turies ag>, and though Irishmen wear
the yoke of bon lage, th <y have never yet
been reduced to Abjeotion. There is not,
to-day, an Irishman, no matter what may
uo bis condition in life, who doec not
cherish tho hops that, some day or other,
Ireland will reclaim her lost liberties and
become again monarch of herself and the
Iramer of her own destiny. They have
cherished this hope for six hundred years,
and it is as strong to-day as ever it was.
Upon these anniversary occasions this
hope is winged with a new inspiration,
which lasts from anniversary to anni
versary, and the fire upon the eltars of
their national love and pride never
smoulders, but is kept in steady blase
aud grows brighter every year. With
legends of Irish prowess their pride is
stimulated, with tales of Ireland’s
wrongs their hate is encouraged, with
the history of what Ireland has done
they are stimulated to a faith in what
she yet may do.
Though the Irish people of this city
have made no arrangement* for any
public demonstration to-day, they are
known to be os true-hearted as any, and
their thoughts will be busy with the old
traditions, and they will talk of the
grandeur of what has been, the wo of
what is and the hope in what may be,
ned their hearts will hold an honest cele
bration of the day of good St. Patrick.
