ill day, and at night your conjunction

and know how to pick cotton ”
About the same time another one of
our citizens received a communication
T ,rv similar to the above, only it spelled
cotton "catting." and closed with “yonrs,
in a tight, Jno. Smith,
-That cannot be a genuine business
letter, Mr. H said somo who sary the

•■Well,” iUBgteted a bystander, •* just

oth.r accomplishments, the mules .cau

oc pttnruNDis,
gvery year since the war has been
conaidrred worse tban its predecessor,
sod the opinion bos, I believe, been well
founded. This year is certainly tbe
hardest of all. Of coureo tbe county of
Putnam, like so many others, hae not
mads sufficient corn and meat since tbe
war, sn 1 snch was tbe low price of last
year's aottoa that many people are with
out money. " Oat of money, out of pro
visions, out of credit,” is the wail that
comet up in many places, and it some
times comes from those who have here
tofore buen considered pretty well-to-do.
I beard, not long since, a man whom I
considered comfortably situated, say, *• I
bsve not ten pounds of meat, and I can
not buy any. I have no money, and I
can't find a man that will credit me.”
Seriously, there is something In the
present situation more alarming tban
anything I ever knew before. Just to
vipress it in few words, 1 -
TUB OUTLOOK IS FEARFUL.
And if the accounts we bear every sea
son were true, tbe country would lie full
of provisions. Every year it is said
•'larger areas of small grain are sown.
Mors corn is planted than eTor before,”
eta. If these assertions were correct tho
provision crop would have increased in
tbe Inst bnlf dozen years to gigantic pro
visions. Instead of that, however, the
storage has beoa about tbe same, or
if there bna been any change it has been
in the way of decrease. One man may
plant more com this year than he did
last, but hia neighbor will put in leas
Tbs next year it will bo reversed. Some
editor or correspondent will see one small
neighborhood where the acreage of grain
is increased, or ho may hear some man
who hardly knows anything outside of
his own plantation,or those immediately
adjoining him, say that such is the case,
and he at once blazons it to tho world
that a much larger grain crop is planted
all over tho country than h.is been for
years. Other editors and correspondents
in other localities will have something of
the same sort. They will copy and ro
copy and quote from each other until
everybody grows elate, and remains so,
till Christmas reveals the fact that there
it no mere corn, no more meat in the
country than there was the year before,
but that the ootton crop has increased,
and it. price has fallen below tho cost of
production.
eoNZTlUNd SINGULAR AND RAD.
But while few men can buy provis
ions “on time,” almost any one can get
credit for gunno. And tho sales of this
article are, I am informed, almost double
this year what they were last. Some
men will buy anything in the world tbnt
they can get on credit. That is one
reason for the increase. A great many
arc induced to purchase fertilizers under
the idea that they will get fifteen cents
s pound for that much cotton, any way,
while they will probably get only eight
or ten for the rest of their crop. And
then the majority are wild nt the pros
pect nhead, and just strike out blindly,
in the vain hope that something may
turn up to their advantage.
PLANTING
vanes in its stage of ndvnncement, not
only in different neighborhoods and on
different plantations, but among differ
ent squads on tho same plantation. For
instance, I know ono place whero most
of the squads finished planting corn on
Saturday, 5th : some on tho Saturday fol
lowing, while one hae not yet commenced.
PLANTATION WORK OINERALLT
it much more forward now than at tbe
same date lost year. The winter hae
beta so mild, and lifter a rain it has gen
erally cleared up so promptly—I moan
with the exception of ono long cloudy
spell before Christmas—that thero have
been very few days when people could
not work. There has been much more
FENCINO AND CLEANING UP
than there has been before in a long
while. Pity indeed if much of this work
should bo in vain, as I fear it will, on
account of lack of supplies to continue
it.
REBUILDING.
The two stores whose walls were left
standing by the late fire are being fitted
®P again, while the two new stores under
the new town hall are slowly approach
ing completion. Nothing yet has been
done toward building on tho sites of the
honses that were burned entirely down,
and I fear that it will be a long time be
fore anything will bo done. Certainly
the present stagnation must pass away
Wore* single step can be taken.

Her beauty has fled. What baa wrought
this wondrous change ? What is that
which is lurking beneath the surface of
that once lovely form ? Does she realize
her terrible condition ? Is she aware of
the woeful appearance she makes ? Wo
man. from her very nature, is subject to
a catalogue of diseases from which man
is entirely exempt. Many of theso mal-
adies are induced by her own careless
ness, or through ignorance of the laws of
her being. Again, many female diseases,
if properly treated, might be arrested in
their conroo, and thereby prove of
short duration. They should not
be left to an inexperienced physi
cian who does not understand tbe'r
nature, and iB. therefore, incompetent to
treat them. The importance of attend
ing to female diseases in their earliest
stages cannot he too strongly urged. For
if neglected, they frequently lead to con
sumption, chronio debility, and often
times to insanity. In all classes of fe
male diseases Dr Pierce’s Favorite Pro
scription is without a rival. No medicine
has ever surpassed it. In "The People's
Common Sense M-dical Adviser," of
which R V. Pierce, M D., of Buffalo, N.
Y., is the author and publisher, is an
extended treatise on woman and her dis
ease*. Under this head, the various af
fections to which woman is incident are
oarefully considered, accurately portray
ed. and a restorative course of treatment
suggested. Every woman, as sho values
her life and health, should possess a copy
of thisvaluable hook. If sho bedis-aied,
this “Adviser” will show her how she
may be restored to health, nnd also direct
her how she may ward off many mala
dies to which she is constantly being ex
posed. Let every suffering woman heed
this timely advice and see herself as
others seo her. Price of Adviser, $1 50
