Yesterday it was bitterly roid. To-day
eery warn, and one would imagine one
self in a sandstorm in the desert. Great
master of dost, not only enveloping the
city in a fog, but whirling about like a
cyclone. For Atlanta cannot get np a
genteel windy day, ae Macon or Savan
nah. She must, aa in everything else,
•tart a hurricane. I defy anybody to keep
his temper. m It may be very welt to be
humble, aud theoretically talk aboot he
ingdnst onginally, and about returning
to drat principles—but to feel one’s noee,
eyes, hair, fingernails, and clothes, as
well u every rqnaro inch of entide, in
inside and outride, deluged, soaked,‘in
grained with Atlanta dust, is very '■ ag
grawating to the feelina." Every frag,

WATER WOBKS.
Yon may ask where are tho water
works ? Such a power of fnaa has been
made about them, they ought to do
something, bat they are the more agra
rating in that pretending to help na,
they add insult to in)nr*. Various abop-
kix-pers and hntinera men, possessing
few feet front, have water work appara
tus, which they understand about as well
as they do the msnagemeut of a hippo
potamus or a whale. They inundate tho
street, pavement and crossings before
their doors, adding to our troubles by
giving us mud and pools of water to
walk through, as well as duct to swal-
low, (for their little efforts to arrest the
dust have about as much effect ar. a but-
terfly'a wing to atop a whirlwind) -and
then utterly unable to control their
whale, it plunges round and probably
soaks the p-isiuroy, or burst* nnd del
uges everybody.
This is very hard on the ladies, who
are lamenting tLoir dampened dreaaes
and wet shoes.
OUR 'tVMTUBAI. Ttssnn”—CLOTHES
Well, now, it is bad enongh to havo
our "cellular, vascular anil muscular
tissues ” tortured without having the
" vestural tissue” ruined likewise. It is
astonishing how it does try a man’s soul
to havo that grand tisane of woolen, or
other cloth injured. Wo carry out
through life the mother’s admonition.
"Tear your own aelvea if yon like, hut
yon must not tear your clothes.’’ I have
seen regiments of bravo soldiers who had
borne unflinchingly storms of shot and
shell, fly ignominonsly before a water
cart. Some years ago, when His Royal
Highness, the Prince of Woles, camo to
Ireland to be mado a Knight of 8(. Pat
riek, I inspected with intenso admira
tion a celebrated regiment which had
been ordered to lino tho streets through
which tho royal carriages were to pass to
the Cathedral. The way had been cleared
hy the police, and the soldiers stood on
the side of the pavement ns immoveable
aa men of stone. The crowd, which was
immense, jeered, joked, and pressed
hurling thunderbolts of witticism in vain.
Not a muscle or an eyelash quivered. A
poor little dog which essayed to pass up
the street was frightened almost to death
l>y the shouts of the peoplo, and was at
last captured hy a policeman. At length
a water cart steadily advanced, onr line
wavered, swayed—and as the water mon
ster ndvanecd, broke and retreated. Can
you imagine the peals of laughter which
made the welkiu ring again ? Never, I
nm sure, in its centuries of- existence
had tho old CathcJrnl, or its close, heard
anything like it.
■TUTORIAL CHAMBERS.
To return to Atlanta and her difficul
ties. The smoko has been coming down
in puffs from every chimney in town.
Even tho sacred precincts of the editorial
chumlxTS have been invaded. I believe
E. Y. Clarke, of tho Constitution, is a
bachelor. lie may have no knowledge
of a scolding wife, but he has of a smok
ing ehimney, as I can testify. By the bye
that, same editorial chamber nnd the
winding way up to it is an experience
which on50 passed no traveler will ever
forget. A narrow stairway twists from
story to story like an eccentric corkscrew,
shut off from the street by a door in one
of the curves, without a ray of light ex
cept from the topmost story, it lends ono
by dark landings through which myste
rious ropes pass and heavy doors open,
out of which at any moment a <je*il
might spring. Thus combining the
horrors of tho mysteries of Udolpho, ot
the luqiiiiition or of tho Inferno, all in
one. It is difficult to see at noonday
—what must those pas ages be in tbo
gl. timing! No wonder so many funeral
dis-ourscs have issued from tho cham
ber. I nevsr ascend but I tliiukof my
own latter end as weil as that of my
neighbors. Having conquered tho stair
way with as much courage as that which
animated the celebrated "Faugh a bal-
lagh ” (clear the way) regiment, one
Teaches the editorial chamber—a cheer-
leu* room with one window looking down
the neighbors’ chimneys, furnished with
a desk and two chairs nnd some horrible
looking machines, which appear to tho
imagination heated by the terrible ascent
like the racks m a torture chamber. Add
to nil this that puffs of smoke greeted^ray
entrance to-day, and yon will appreciate
the rapidity with which I transacted my
^usinetj and "took myself out of that.”
A farmer would require no better proof
ot the utter barren ness of the Atlanta
roil than the etate of that staircase—for
in the corners of each step there is dirt
eoouga to raise a bunch of turnips and a
fine potato vine if there was a particle of
vitality in the soil.
WAinsa fob aoxrrniNa to turn up.
Dulluess reigns in the city- In short,
