The train from Savannah last night brought but few passengers. All with whom wo conversed were of tho opinion that the fever was on tho decrease, with a lar<e falling off in the number of deaths. A daughter of Edward C. An derson, Jr, b reported to haro died on Thursday, and several prominent resi dents nro mentioned among the now cases. The Central railroad authorities, we were informed, aro conveying, free of charge, tho poorer classes to and from Savannah, night and morning—giving all who desire to do so an opportunity of sleeping outside tho city. It is said that a large number avail tbem- eelves of this well timed generosity, and that numerous coaches aro required for their transportation. If this report be true, it shows very great and consid erate liberality on the part of tho Central road.. Wo taka great pleasure in publishing the following letter frem a well known gentleman, whoso statements will bo re ceived without a question: Savannah, September 7, 1376 FJtier* Telegraph and lltstenger: Hav ing a largo circle of friends scattered by tho panic throughout the State, who will behave my report, allow me tho privi lege of communicating reliable informa tion through the columns of yonr wide extended paper. They know that I am not located in the city, hat adjacent to it, and through tho years of 1H54 and 1858 was an actire worker in combatting the disease. On Monday afternoon lost, I came down to tho city to see for myeelf tho real con dition of affairs. I found unduo excite ment existing in the minds of the peo ple—fear engendered from false reports and minors which were flying on tho wings of tho wind. Every one giving currency to wild rumors and denying tho truth of the official report?. I quietly took note ond investigated, and my con clusion is that no burial has been omitted in either of the cemeteries adjacent to the city. On one or two occasions persons have boen interred late in the evening, after tho report of that day has been sent to the Clerk of Council, but they have invariably appeared on the following day. The disease is of a mild type, easily controlled by proper medical treatment, and when the mind has not been demor altzed by fear the oatient soon recovers. But when reason is dethroned, the pby- cian's skill is of littlo avail. Destitution has much to do with the present condition of things. Had an efficient organization been formed for supplying tho wants of tho poor and needy eix weeks ago, and nutritious food served out to" them, I beliovo much of the present diseaso and death would have been avoided. Even now their wants are only partially supplied. Council yesterday afternoon appointed a committee to investigate the causes, but tht-y are patent to any one. Tho Springfield plantation on the west, and tho body of old rice fields on the east, have been frequoatly overflowed by the floods of rain Into in tho spring and the early summer, subject to a temperature which invaricMy cn~ n ’• re fever, to gather with a disregard to old sanitary measures; cleansing cesspools in the , heat of tho day ; throwing the offal from the city within the corporate limits, etc., nnder the notion of tbeolcments creating a poisonous atmosphere. Disease is produced by a violation of nature'a laws. When wo learn to pay a duo regard to them, we may exp. munity from dii While the committee was oot the chair invited any gentleman present to give any information in hi* posseaaion rela tive to the sufferings at Savannah— whereupon Her. G. N. McDonald waa called for and stated, in substance, that he had left there Friday last, and was satisfied that the epidemic was on the increase and had not yet reached its climax. There was much suffering pre vailing among the poorer classes and it was reaching among the more wealthy classes, but they had the means to get away, so that the distress was mostly confined to the poor. Major Shellman, agent of the Central railroad, was called upon, and stated that ho had no other information of later date than in the papers, except that which the conductor on the train to night brought. It was simply that the people in Savannah seemed in better spirits and that it was thought that the fever was abating. The Mayor and Chief of Police were requested to state what load been done by the city officers in relation to the san itary condition of the city. The Mayor replied that he had made every policeman a health officer for the last week. All cellars, places of refuse, etc., were being examined and cleansed. He thought the city in a cleanly and healthy condition, and not a single case of yellow fever here so far, and none ap prehended. The Council at their next meeting would appoint a special health committee, in a scordance with their char ter, and every precaution will be further taken to preserve the health of the city. The committee of nine, through their chairman. Col. Jemison, presented the following resolutions: Resolved, That we, the people of the city of Macon, hereby extend to the citi zens of our sister city, Savannah, in this day of their sore affliction from yellow fever, the cordial invitation to come among us, and thereby escape, if possible, the scourge which is now upon them. Oar climate is healthful, and we ask them to oome and make their homes with us during the present epidemic. Resolved, That a committee of five from each ward in the city be appointed by the Cbair to solicit subscript ions of money and provisions, to be sent by said committee to the Benevolent Association of Savannah, when said Benevolent As sociation shall indicate the same will be acceptable or desirable, and that our country friends be invited to nnite with us in this good work. Resolved, That two citizens from each word be appointed as a board of health, and that the physicians of the city be re quested to act with them, and that they use all possible means to keep our city in its present healthy condition. Passed. Mr. Blount movod that a copy of the resolutions be sent to the Mayor and the officers of the Benevolent Association of Savannah, and also to the Txleobapk and Mxssxnoeb for publication. Mr. T, D. Tinsley added that a copy be also sent to the Savannah Morning Jfine$ for publication—both of which were carried. Rev. Tho Atlanta Constitution of yesterday contains tho following from Col. Albert R. I am in receipt of a letter from the head of the Benevolent Association conveying the information that money, provisions and clothing are greatly needed to succor tho suffering sick. Tho destitution is great and demands immediate relief. At the request of the association, which is using every effort nt its command to combat the disease and to aid tho sick, I make this appeal to the people of Geor gia for aid.
