We publish elsewhere a tribute of re

delay in publishing the.-n tributes is at
tributable to the fact that one of the

no one to call tho committee together,
no reports were prepared.

done to gardens by wash-up. Tho river

Unloss somo disaster not now appro'

hear good reports. Mr. W. M. Kirslt, of
Houston county, eends us a twig five
inches long, broken from ono of bis peach
trees, which twig bears seven very
hsalt by-looking peaches, and he sends ns
word that it ia but a fair samplo of the
two hundred trocs which his orchard con
tains. The peach and plum trees in and
abont Macon, as far as we have had op
portunity to examine them, nil givo
promise of good crops.

They are now working from Seventh

by Mcssxs. W. V. Collins A Bro., lost a
flogor yesterday morning by his own
oirelessness. He was ironing a vebiole
and was engaged in fitting something
abont tbe slide, which enpplien the place
or the fifth wheel. With bis left band
npon tho slide, be wheeled the front part
of the boggy nronnd, so S3 to get at his
work better, and his finger was caught
between tbe sliuo and tho iron under
which it passed, and clipped off as neatly
as tbongh it bad been ran ibroagh an
energeiio buzz-saw. Tom lost the third
fisger on bis left band, acd bss succeeded
in learning a Isason in mechanics wbiob
will benefit him for tbe remainder of his
life.
The Bain crCraasboppers nnd Birds.
Tie mentioned in Sunday morning’s
Ttixansm a.vn MEfsixom ■ remarkable
visitation from grasshoppers which the
city received daring a wind and rain
storm tbe night before. Sofir we have
been nnsble to Had aDy one who can sit-
isfsetorliy account for the pretence of
the insects. It is very generally believed
that they are not identical with wbat is
known as the “hatefni” grasshopper
which was so destructive to the fVest.
Tbe bediaa of these are from an Inch and
a half to three inches long, and of
brownish oolor. Tbe wings are cf a deli
cste gauzy appearance and beautifully
marked with brown. They are good fiy
ers, retching the tops of buildings easily,
and apparently able to sustain a continu
ons flight for a considerable distance.
Only a few of these insects remained in
the city Sunday, nnd on yesterday hardly
one was to be seen anywhere. It is pos
sible that they wero migrating, and, be
ing overtaken by tho wind, were thrown
into the city, where they were too much
dsxzled by the light to proceed upon their
journey. They were thickest around the
street lamps, and dashed against every
window that was lighted up and into the
open doors of lighted buildings.
There was no exaggeration in our
statement in regard to their number.
While they wero distributed all over the
city, they wero thicker in eomo sections
than they were in others. They were
gathered along Bridge Bow, by tbe baa
ketfnl, by fishermen, who wanted them
for bait, and in the neighborhood of the
City Hall and on the hill they were
equally thick.
Another remarkable occurrence during
the storm was a shower of sea birds. Of
these we heard nothing Saturday night-
but Sunday morning they were found in
almost every part of tie eity. They
were picked up without difficulty wher
ever found, and many persons had them
in tbeir possession yesterday.
Thore was a great diversity of opinion
as lo wbat species of bird It was. Somo
insisted that It was the common didapper,
otbera that it was tho marsh ben known
to Ibo ponds along tbe coast, while otber
bad stilt otber names for if. An exami
nation of Andnbon, howover, satisfies n»
that tbe proper common name of the
bird is Plod-billed Dobobiek, nearly al
lied to tbs grebe family, to whloh tbe di
dapper, blaok diver, etc., belong. It is
a migratory bird, wintering on the South
ern Atlantio and Golf coasts, and when
warmer weather sets in seeking summer
resorts as do tbo wild goose and otber ml
grstory fowls.
The dobchick is perfectly at home in
water and flies rapidly when onco in tbe
air; baton land it is entirely helpless
and, not only nnablo to move abont with
any degroo of alacrity, but i3 also unable
to rise in tho air and resume its flight.
This brings us to tho most plausible
speculation as to tbeir prosence in tho
city. These birds wero possibly making
tbeir annual flight northward, and, being
overtaken by tbe storm of Saturday night,
wero thrown into the city. Whenever
they fell npon the ground they were
cosily caught, os, by their nature, they
were wholly unable to continue their
flight. Great numbers of them lighted in
the river and in tho swamps below the
city, and hundreds wero Bbot and hawked
about tbo streets for salo yesterday. A
few live ones have been put in tbo lake
at tbo park, and thero are three in the
basin of tho fountain in tho court of tbo
Brown Houbo.

A night on tbo rail is not the most
fruitful ecurce of items for newspaper
correspondence. Leaving Macon last
night at 7i o’clock wo consigned our
selves to tho tender mercies of conductor
Sharpe and his train—tho “we” consist
ing of Dr. A. G. Hay good, of Oxford, and
Rev. J. W. Burke, of Macon.
PB0FIT8 OT SHEEP RAISING.
A lively discussion sprang up on the
snbjeot of shcep-raisicg. The arguments,
though not so attractive logically, abound
ed in illustration. One was to the point:
A man in the wlre-graBs region, five
years ago commenced operations with six
head of sheep. He has supplied bis own
family with mntton, good and tender,
and sold wool and mntton enough to pay
for tbe herd and cost of keeping them,
and hss now over ono hundred head of
sheep.
Tho question was asked how be pro
tected them from the doge. Tho answer
was that he herded his cheep with his
osttle, and housed them all together at
night—tbe cattle proving a protection
against all attacks.

Tbe only rest easiness ir transacts, is tbe
election cf four delegates from tbe lay
men to attend tbe ensuing session of the
annual Conference. Tbo religious ele
ment is made tbe prominent feature
therefor.
Each pastor is called upon to repertlho
condition of his work. This be does in
his own way. Consequently, some of the
reports are nniqae, not only in language,
but in character. The reports this yeir,
generally, are not so encouraging in this
district, and especially ia finances.
“hard Tnits'*
has found its way into tho cabins in the
wire-grass section. Tbo want cf proper
views of the benevolent collections of tbe
chnrch was m03t forcibly illustrated by
oae of the preachers to day. He was
taking up a collection for domestic mis
sions, and bad made an earnest appeal to
a well filled bouse. Tbe hat was passed
around, and tbe grand result was—the
sum of

A SENSATION TBOX DARIEN.
The station will close its deliberations
on to-morrow and after the Sanday ser

ry ripple. When the name of Darien

from the late pastor of that church, sta
ling that he hud withdrawn from the.M.

self with the Episcopal church and was
now a student for orders in that denomi

In Soatb Carolina*
Mr. E. 7. Smalley, the special corres
pondent of the New York Tribune, who
was in Macon a short time since, writes a
letter from Charleston, from which we
extract as follows:
Now that deliverance is at band, people
begin to scan the rain wrought by these
long eight years of misgoveruuieut. Tbe
Slate debt, which was abont half a mil
lion when tbe carpet-baggers came in, is
now over six million-, and there are
fl Jilting obligations amounting to over a
million more. Once tbo debt was as high
s fifteen millions, bnt tho very men woo
made It cried reform a few years ago and
repudiated abont three millions fraudu
lently tanned by tbe old financial ring.
Then they consolidated tbe remainder at
il ly cents on tbe dollar. For these six
minions acd over lefc as a legaoy by the
out-going regime there is nothing to
show—not n stick or stone—save the
half-finished penitentiary in Ooinmbis.
And all these years tbe Stale tax was
double the amount it need have been if
h-neely had prevailed in the State Gov
ernment. Altogether, I think ten millions
not an extravagant estimate of the steal
ings of the negroes and carpet-baggers
who ran the State. How much they stole
in tbe county and city governments I oa%
not guess. This is the penalty paid di
rectly by Sonth Carolina as the cost of
ibe experiment of universal suffrage
forced npon her. Tbe indirect loss must
bo much more, for all enterprise has been
asphyxiated by tbe political miasma.

A Warning to Thin Women.—A
good anecdote is related of a lady at
party whoso dress and form were fault
less. Just before dinner an admirer of-
ferred her a flower from his button-holo.
Tho dress being fastened behind, the
flower hnd to be adjusted with a pm.
Just then they went down to dinner, and
tho gentleman thought he heard a noise
as though wind wero escaping from a
bellows. Tho lady had soon lost her
fair proportions, and tho tightly fitting
dress was most baggy. It appears that
tho latest fashion for thin ladies’ dresses
is an air-tight lining blown out to the
proper size. The pin put lo keep the
flower in had penetrated the air-tight
lining and caused a grand collapse.—

AH OBJECT OF INTEREST
Among the objects of interest at tho Centen«
nial, ther« was none that had more special
interest for physicians than Benson’s Capcine
Porous Piaster. They recognize a treat improve
ment on the ordinary porous plaster, and a new
and wonderful axent for relieving pain and cur
ing a certain class of ailments such as rheuma
tism, lameness of tho back and muscles, shooting
pains in tho back and sides, and spinal and kid
ney affections. Tho fame of this remarkablo
article has spread during tlio last two years
over tbe whole civilized world. Thera is scarcely
a druggist in the United States that does not
keep them. It acts quicker than ordinary porous
plasters, relieves pain at once, and cures quickiy.
