EAST MACON DIVERSIONS.
Tho regular meeting of the Esst Ma
con Reading and Social C ub, was held at
Mrs. F.asder’s, on Monday evening, and
although ‘ O.-l Prcbkbilitiea” bad drawn
bis pall over tbe bright sUra, threatening
every moment to deluge earth, a large
and fashionable audience of tho elite of
tbe city crowded the spacious rooms of
the coble hostess and President.
Tbe evening exercises were opened
with an instrumental duet by Mrs. F. and
B. which elicited lend applause. The
piece was well rendered and deserved all
the applause given it. Two solos end
one duet wts sang by Miesas P. and E.
in their usual bsppy style and were well
received by the audience. They sing
well
French’s one act force entitled tho
‘•Area Bellei” was then presented by a
portion of the clnb. Mrs. B, the leading
character as Penelope was charmingly
aweetin hor smart servant's dro**,»nd we
can confidently say that the ''Area Belle”
could not have been better represented
by actresses who bad been stars on the
metropolitin boards. This lady certainly
has tbe talent to become a fine amateur
actress, or more, she was so sweet that
’lis no wonder that Messrs. E. and C, as
policeman and soldier, had a longing at
the heart. These two gentlemen, as her
principal support, wero well up in their
parts, and were applauded many times.
They are buds of promise. Mr. W. as
hideously ugly in his smock frock and
country bat as be possibly could havo
made himself, but when the end came
and Pileher and Tower being cast aside,
tbe Area Belle, smiliog her sweetest smile,
put her little hand in his and told him
he was a trump, surely ho must have
been consoled. However, Pitcher and
Touts baring feasted well on the stolen
delicacies of Missus Croaker larder,
scorned well content to transfer Penelope,
after her dismissal to Chalks• *lne
rendition of Mn. Croaker, tho cross lady
of tho house, by Mies P.. was exceedingly
well done. No ono who knows this
charming and gentle lady would bavo
supposed her able to so transform her
self. From tho rounds of applause wo
certainly think that every ono was well
pleased with tho farce.
After the farce the company were fa
vored with the quarrel of Brutus and Cas
sius, just before the battle of Phillipi.
Both tho gentlemen, Messrs. D. and I.,
havo good deliveries, and they entered
full into tho piece, and wero angry and
calm hy turns—even ns Brutus was tho
calm, judicious man, and Casriusthc fiery,
hot Loaded soldier. Their conception
was goed. j/a - • ■
After this piece tho President an
nounced tbe readers, etc., for the next
mooting, and then said that ono and all
wero invitqd to Mrs. D. M. Flanders
(next door), where tho ladles of the clab
had preparod to entertain them the bal
ance of the evening. All went—some
with a puzzled look, as if they wondered
what this entertainment was, others with
a glad, happy expression beaming all
over their faces, aa if they knew and
could almost tasto it. When wo all
reached there, wo found that Kessler,
by somo magic wand, had been in
stalled in the hall, and sweet music
welcomed all. Some man—mad with tho
love of waltz—cried, “a dance, a dance,”
and soon tho goddess of dance reigned su
preme. But gradually there was a wan-
dering away and, boing of a curious mind,
we followed the throng into another room,
and wonders upon wonders, what done
see? a table groaning under all the deli
cacies of tho land—everything ono
wished—all from tho ladies. Ye gods!
how we feasted.
Ah! ladies, we shall not forget you soon.
But we cannot write of all tho wonders of
theao goodly ladies and gentlemen—
’twoald take too much space. R?st assured
ladies and gentlemen, that yonr ^visitors
were well pleased and royally entertained.
Speaking for onrsclf, we can sny that no
invitation will be moro gladly received
than ono to attend more of yonr mect-
inga.
Wo understand—at least it is rumored
—that the nmatuer actors and actresses
ore getting up a larger piece. Wo trust
it is so, for they can do it, and we would
like to see it. ■•Visitor ''

take up the small grain and din it in
their ears till they heed you. Tho cause
of the great complaint of failure of the
oat crop, all agree, was late
sowing, and tbe sama thing will
occur any severe winter. Too much
time taken up with cotton in the fall will
always cause a neglect of the small grain
crops in proper season. Cotton
may be King, but the poor devil
is without a crown, and if be were
crowned, there would be no jewels to deck
it, for all these go to adorn Northern
guano factories, Tennessee mules’ ears,
and to be trampled upon br Western
hogs. Farming has been, and is still be
ing, very much retarded by cold and wet.
One suggestion to the people of the
Twenty-third Senatorial District: By
reference to United States census of 1870,
the population of Houston county is put
at 20.359, Crawford and Taylor respect
ively at 7,555 and 7,139. The first has
three Representatives, and two last one
each. I see tbat a Houston paper pro
poses to appropriate to her four out of
six delegates to the Convention in June.
Houston must have a delegate for every
6,000, and Crawford and ’Taylor oce for
7,000. Is this fair? Come, gentlemen,

J sines Par ton’s Baby.
Pittsburg Chronicle.J
It is stated that “Mr. James Parton is
rejoicing over bis first baby.” Parton?
Parton? Yes, we remember, now. Mr.
Parton married Fanny Fern. Was hor
third husband. And when she died be
married her daughter—his stepdaughter.
But bo could not endure tbe idea of being
a stepfather. It was ropugnset to his
feelings. So bo married her, and then
discovered tbo laws of the State did not
reoognizs r.uch marriages, and asked tbe
law-mskcis to make a little law for him,
but they refused, and he moved off tbe
premises without notifying the landlord,
sinco wtirhtime wa had not heard of him
cntil this baby reminded us of theso
things. But what bothers us now is to
fix Hr. Parton’s relationship—or rather
his numerons relationships—to that baby.
In tho first place, ought we to call him a
father or grandfather ? Because it is his
child, and his grandchild. Bat if that
baby is his grandchild and Parton is its
father, bless ns, Parton must bo brother
to himself! Tbat is quite clear. And
if Parton is hiB own biotber, why, then
bo must bo undo to that baby. That
follows, of course. And if be is nude
to that baby bia wife must be its sunt.
Why, there is no end to this confusion.
Of course, Mrs. Parton can’t be aunt and
mother at tbe same |time. The is absurd.
Wo sec now where we wero in error.
The exact relationship may be stated thus:
Parton is a father and—is it a half or fourth
grandfather? No mattor; call it a half.
Consequently that baby is—is .
Now, Fanny Fern took him as her third
huRbacd, and Parton’s present wife being
her daughter, and not his, that daughter's
baby is no kin to him. That sounds &b-
surod, too, very. Allowing it is Parton’s
child, to begin with, Parton is its father,
and he is jnst es much its grandfather,
unless it is tho intention not to permit
the poor thing to have any grandfather
at all. Now, if it is his grandchild and
he was Fanny Fern’s third husband,
and this baby is tbe child of her dsugh-
ter, every time ho takes it on his knee—
it oonld'nt possibly be twins, could it?
No, that isn’t it. Yet there does appear
to be two generations in that baby some
how. The idea of dandling two genera
tions on ono knee! That is the most
ridiculous idea of all. Why, if that child
were really Fanny Fern's daughter’s ohild,
and father to her daughter now, it ain’t
possiblo Parton could pick himself np
and dandle himself on his own knee!
This is tho most serious matrimonial com-
plioation wa ever tried to solvo. We are
unable to do more than orack the shell; the
real kernel appears to be shrouded in
complications as numerous ns the folds
enwrapping an Egyptian mummy. Wo
ere afraid to pursue the snbjcot uoy fur
tber, less the horrible suepioion that
dawns upon us tbat tho baby should prove
to be Parton’s father should bo verified.
Aaitis, we think it osght not to be Par-
ton's father.
