THE oity.
THURSDAY, APBIL 12, 1877.
ctitr.
Mr. B. Brown has our thanks for a
copy of tho May number of Godoy’s
Lady'i Book. It is n capital number of
this always popular old monthly, foil of
hints of spring time.
Traveler'* Recard,
n, Jj. Bickns bss laid on onr table
a copy of the above named paper, which
is a rery neat little monthly, published
solely in the interest of tho Travelers’ Ufe
and Accident Insurance Company, of
Hartford, Conn,
Speaker.
Matter Willie Gaohet has been elected
to represent First Street Methodist
Church as speaker on the occasion of tho
forthcoming May festival. Ho is a
sprightly lad end will sustain the Jadg-
mect of his Sunday school in eieoting
him. . _
Personal.
Judge William J. Wnsling, of Chicago,
IU.; Hoc. W. M. Tomlin, of Georgia; Al
bert K Her, of Philadelphia; F. L. Ellis,
of Kentucky, and M. Bycrrcn, of Chica
go, were registered at the Brown House
en yssterday.
Millinery.
Mrs. A. Binswanger hoe enlivened her
(ton on Cotton Avcnuo with all the nov
elties in spring styles of ladies’ hats and
bonnets, also ribbons, ties, flowers, toys’
hats, and other goods in her lino of basi
net,. It ia enough to give a man tbe
cramp in his p-cket-boolr to look in as be
passes along the Avenue.
Srw Barber Shop.
Miko Hapicr and Willis Braswell have
ulaaolfr'd their co partnership, and Mike
has opened a caw shop on Cherry street,
four doors atove Third, where ho will be
glad to welcome his old customers.
Mike ia one of tbe best known barbers in
Macon, and has a good thop now, with
plenty of good barbers, and says ho in
tend; to make an honest living if bo can.
auralary.
Bight before last an enterprising burg-
lar climbed a high fence in tho rear of
McGrath's bakery, cn Third street,
forced open tbe back door and with an
ax belonging upon the premises, opened a
desk, evidently with the hnpo of obtaining
money. Tbcro being no money in the
shop the burglar left, disdaining to take
with him even as much as a loaf of bread
or a rake. Thu creates a suspicion that
tho burglary was committed by a wbito
man us c negro would rather have a gin
ger cake than a greenback any time.
The County Court.
Judge Best concluded bis criminal
docket yeeterday. Only n fow cases have
been disposed of daring the week.
The case of Wm. Pleasants, charged
with cotton stealing was postponed. One
indictment against tho receiver of tho
stolen cotton was tried and a verdict of
acquittal was rendered. There aro two
other indictments against tho same
party, both of which wero continued.
The caso against Bey. Eh Smith, tho
colored Baptist minister, charged with
intcrlusivo condnct, was postponed nntil
Saturday, tho 28th instant. Smith has
been convicted of this crimo once, but a
new trial was grantod him.
General Toombs.
A number of Macon gentlemen united
a fow days ago in a request to General
Bobert Toombs to deliver an address in
tbis city at bis earliest convenience, upon
tho subject of a Constitutional Conven
tion. General Toombs replied very
promptly, accepting tho invitation, and
tho address will bo delivered somo timo
week after next.
It will bo liko a return of old times,
indeed, to hear the eloquence of General
Toombs upon current political topics, and
he will attract ono of the largest nodi
cnees orer assembled in Macon. With a
mind as grand as ever adorned America,
and with an eloqucnco as ponderous as
the roar of heavy artillery, he has an un
equalled power to instruct and delight an
auditory.
Messrs. Taggart and Johnson.
These gentlemen filled the appointment
of Messrs. Hall and Cree last night be-
fore the Yeung Men's Christian AsaocU
lion in Mnlberry Street Methodist Church.
There wes a goodly attendance, and.
though a feeling of general disappoint
meat pervaded the oommnnity during
the previous day, when the absence of
tho fsmons agents of the International
T. M. 0. A., was announced, yet the ex
ercises had hardly commenced before all
was forgotten in the deep and almost
breathless interest elicited by their worthy
representatives.
Mr. Taggart is a veteran in the work,
a fine Singer, and perfectly eglowwilh
zeal and animation.
His as;oeiste, Gen. X). 8. Johnson, of
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was a Confederate
officer and reoeived a wonnd at tho siege
of Atlanta.
He, too, is possessed of ranch magnet
ism, and is an orator of no ordinary power.
Tbe exercises embraced abort and ap
propriate exhortations, prayers, the read
ing of tbe Scriplnres and tho rendering
of a multitude of tbe sweet songs of Zion.
Hot for one cecond did tbe services flag,
or loto their sprightly animation and soul
aron-ing fervor. We never saw an audi
ence bandied In a more maeterly man
cer, or greater sympathy manifested for
tbe upeckor*. Yet the utmost order and pro
priety characterized all tbe proceedings,
and it was impossible not to be moved
and deligbted by the intense earnestness
and unmistakable piety of those devoted
evangelists. Christ and Him orncifltd
was tho brrden of their messages, end
many borne truths were uttered as to tbe
real objeota and work of the Association
The meeting deed with a “singing
service," which seemed to produce the
deepest effect upon the congregation
Never before hive re realized the power
of muaical harmony when directed to the
praise of God over tho hnman heart. No
wonder that Sankey accomplishes co
much good by chanting in melting strains
tbe love and mediation of our arisen
Lord.
Mr. Taggart's selections were admira
ble, and his musical resources apparently
inexhaustible. He was ably assisted at
the organ by Prof. Newman, who entered
freely into tbo spirit of the occasion.
These gentlemen, it will be seen else
where, will hold two meetings to-day,
ono at 4:30 in tho First Baptist Church,
and then at night at the Mulberry Street
Cbnrch again.
We ore sure, after the experience of
last night, there is no necessity to nrge
onr citizens, old and yonng, to turn cat
to hear them. The churches will bo
crowded.
Let all unite in the fervent hope and
prayer that tho visit of these excellent
servants of God may prove, under di*
vine blessing, a princeless benefit to tbo
community.
The Board of Health.
An attempt was made yesterday after
noon to hold a meeting of the Board of
Health m tho City Hall, hut thero being
co quorum present, the Board did not
organize. A meeting will bo held at the
City Hall at 6 o’clock Monday evening.
The following gentlemen have been
appointed upon tbe Board. Two of tho
number, however, we believe have not
yet signified their acceptance of the po
sition:
First Ward—C. Mastcrson and D. M.
Flanders.
Second Ward—P. Fitzgerald and John
G. Deitr.
Third Ward-Treat Hines and J. Mad
ison Jones.
Fourth Wan!—W. D- Williams, W. I*.
Gcodall and G- J. Blako.
The Pence Court.
There wao some show of business be
fore tho Mayor yesterday morning, bnt it
amounted to very-little after all. The
catch wax a tolerably good one, bnt tbe
quality was rather poor.
Lem Msunu, an unhappily mated indi
vidual of unmistakable descent, believes
in the Mcbamedan theory of reorganizing
a wife, and when his wife offends him, or
refuses to obey his marital laws, he chas
tises her. He has beea before tho
Mayor four times for offenses of this
kind. Three times ho was fined five dol
lars each, and the other he was acquitted
because he got tho worst of tho fight.
He paid his five dollars yesterday.
W. J. MoOowan, a man who was in
limbo some time ago for stealing a watch
and discharged for wsnt of a prosecutor,
though the stolen property was found
upon his person, was up yesterday for
raising a disturbance in a house cl ill re
pate. The Mayor gave him just two
boors in which to leave town, and ho
promised to leave. This man was by no
means an ornament to the oity. He
elaimed to be a peddler of cheap pinch-
haok, but is a manipulator of ohuck-a-
luek and other obeap games. The city
can better afford to lose him than a better
Lieutenant Taylor introduced Loo Oli
ver at the instance of Anna Byan, nnder
a general charge of disorderly oondr.ot.
An investigation proved that Lnn has
been availing herself of a woman’s privi
lege of gossiping, and had dealt with the
ohartoter of Anna in a manner that was
detrimental thereto. The Mayor conld
not find that the City Code empowered
him with any jurisdiction over a woman's
tongue, and he, therefore, dismissed the
summons.

Public Bendings. •
Prof. Willoughby Beade, of England,
will give a series of readings and person
ations of humorons character at Ralston
Hall, next Taesday night, nnder the aus
pices of tho Publlo Library. These reed
ings have been given in Boston, New
York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Nashville,
Bichmond, Buffalo, Bocbester, end other
large cities with groat sneoecs. It has
been said by competent critics that “no
pnblisbcd programme can give any idea
of tbe immense amount of enjoyment
and mirth there is in Prof. Beade’s enter,
tainmenl.” He has recently been in At
lanta, where he greatly delighed large
audiences.
1. M. C. A.
The following are tho appointments
for tho meetings of tho Young Men’s
Christian Association for to-day:
At 4J o’clock r. m., at tho First Bap
tist Church.
At 8 o’clock p. m., at Mulberry Street
Methodist Church.
At 12 m., a conference meeting will be
held at tho Y. M. C. A. hall. It is re
quested that all the members of tbe
Association, as far as possible, be pres
ent at tbis meeting, which will last only
abont thirty minntes.
Dlsnliirit Lump.
The lamp on Second street, at the month
of the alley between Flnm and Pine has
been in a disabled condition for several
nights, and it now lies in fragments, scat
tered about tho sidewalk and street. Its
demolition is *o complete that tbo gas com
pany will bavo to provide a new lama
entirely.
Gnol Shop-Lifting.
A night or two ago a negro naan went
into the store of Mos. Lsvy, corner of
Third and Oglethorpe streets, and asked
to be shown somo shoes. He was soon
fitted in a pair, and then asked for socks.
While he was examining .tho latter Mr.
Lovy’s back was turned for a moment
when the negro darted ont cf the store
with the shoes and socks. Mr. Levy sent
a conple cf pistol balls tffer him; fcnt
they failed to ovartako the flying thief.
The Fire Department.
The contest of the Macon Fire Depart.
mont on Saturday promises to bs ono of
the moat interesting that has ever taken
placo. The gallant boys of Defianca No.
6 were dissatisfied with the test, and for
sotno timo declined to enter, but wo are
glad to know that they have subjected
their scruplc3 to tho public spirit and
enterprise which they have always man.
ifeated; and will go into tho contest
and do their level best to win. They
have not boen in training at all. and their
engine will come out of tbe house simply
in such condition as it is constantly kept
for use at fires. The oompany claims
that their engine has not an equal ca
pacity with any one of the four other
ateamers; bnt they know that it is good
to come sqnaro down to work and to
stick to it as long as anything is to be
done.
The Dixie Works.
We regard this as cne of the most en
terprising institutions in Macon. Mesu a.
Bertram, Hendrix A Co., besides being
practical men, are lire men, and are giv
ing the people an opportunity to patron
ize home industry at no more expense
than it requires to patronize Yankee
cheap productions. They have lately
added some new machinery to their
works, with special reference to the man-
nfacture ofsasb, doors and blinds, and
are now prepared to famish them made
of good, seasoned Georgia yellow pine,
as cheap os the same articles made of
white pine, can be laid down hire from
the West. Lumber is cheap and labor
is cheap, hence there is no obstacle in
tbe way cf tbeir making cheap articles
in their line. Their facilities are ample
enough then to supply any demand that
ia likely to arise, and to supply dt in the
very best manner.
They keep on hand a large stock of
sasb, doors, blinds, brackets, glass,
paints and ali other bnildeis’ materials,
and intend to keep this stock as complete
as any in the country. To enable them
to do tbis with greater certainty they will,
at an early day, put up a drying estab
lishment in connection with tbsir works.
This will render them independent of
the lumber market, so far as relates to
seasoned lumber, whirh they have here
tofore had seme difficulty in procuring in
a satisfactory manner.
There ia no limit to the enterprise of
tbe gentlemen who are at the head of
this establishment, hence we expect to
sea them enlarge their operations nntil
they folly cover the territory that prop
erly belongs to them.

ITS VALUE & MEANING
The value and meaning of the Centennial ju
rors* award to Benson's Capcine Porous Plaster
of tho only medal given to porous plasters, may
be learned, when the great popularity of the
old kind of porous plasters is called to mind, and
it is known that the four furors who gavo their
decision in favor of Benson's Ca pci do Plaster,
were men having a world-wide reputation for
being great and learned physicians, and that
they carefully tested Benson’s Cape ire Porous
Plaster, with many others, and became thor
oughly convinced of its great superiority over
them, and of its wonderful pain-relieving and
strengthening qualities, for rheumatism, lame
and weak back, spinal and hip diseases, sciatica,
lumbago, painful sprains and bruises, and all
local aches and pains, it is surely the best reme
