Last night at 2:20 o’clock a fire broke
oat in Z. B. Wheeler's bar aod restau
rant, on Fourth street. Tbe restaurant
was in a small frame bmldiag, situated
immediately between tbe Brown House
and National Hotel.
The fire originated in tbe rear of the
bniiding, probably in tbe kitchen of the
restaurant. Tbe building burned like
tinder. Tbe heat communicated tbe flames
to rbe Brown House and National Hotel,
and at 3 o’clock both hotels were bnrning-
Tne guests were very much alarmed, and
women screamed, and all was bustle and
confusion.
The fire department turned out prompt
ly, and began the battle. No. 1 put the
first stream on tbe flame*. No. 5 came in
next, and the ctber engines followed.
By tbo moat manly and heroic efforts
tho National hotel was saved, although
fora* time it seemed inevitably doomed.
Tbe roof of tbo Brown House continued
burning, and all effor’s to extinguish the
flames failed. The fire gained steady
headway, and at the hour of going to
press (4 a. x.) tbe fire is burning steadily
with tbe complete destruction of tbis
costly structure almost inevitable.
Too mu oh praise oannot be awarded oar
gallant firemen for tbeir efforts.
Tbe lo3s of tbe iestanren’]will not ex
ceed $1,000.
Mr. Brown u insured to the amount of
$40,000 on the building, and $5,000 on
tho furniture. Below the hotel were
several stores. The stocks ware mostly
saved.
The fireia one of tbe most serious and
destructive that has ocoureJ in this city
for years.

Our Vaioateer Military.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger : One
of our military companies will celebrato
its 53rd anniversary on Tuesday of this
week. Tho anniversary of this old com
pany was once a great holiday in Macon
both with tho company’s members and
with our citizens generally. It wob one
of the yearly holidays of the town. How
is it now ? Even among members of the
company we hear doubts as to ability to
attend tho parade on that date. It does
seem that any man desiring tho name of
soldier, or with pndo enough to come to
be one, would let nothing short of actual
sickness keep him out of tbo ranks at
such a time, if he can control his time on
that day. *'Ay, there’s the rub” in many
cases.
And this brings mo to the second que&
tion for consideration. Is the town lc:-
g its military pride, and our citizen."
losing their interest in our volunteer
companies—even those that e-re so old
as to be liko landmarks in the place?
You would almcit come to that conclu
sion, Messrs. Editors, if you had the ex
perience of somo of us in gettiug our
volnnteer soldiers excused ftom their
places of business, even in the dulUst busi
ness season.
We can all understand tbo feelings
which make a faitbi.il employe he.sitrti
to ask his employe; for permission
parade with h— company during the
hoars of bnsiness, at any time, and ob,
how we do apcreoirjv tue good tetto,
kindne's of heur, pnbiio spirit, military
pride in cut cit-zan soldiery, or whenever
tits it i -_y be t’ t prompts the employer
t3‘‘do'':e deront thing,” end say to his
clerk that he fc ready to exouse bim if he
wish— to turnout with bis company. If,
on account of prer ing businer-, a mei-
crant oannot spare his olerk, no reasona
ble man oould object to being kept back,
but it is not ple.'-aat to have to make a
speoial request for eaoh parade, end often
have the consent given in snch spirit a
to mako the applicant regret that he ask
edit.
How many of oar merchants will un
asked give tho desired permission, even
on this annivercary parade of our oldest
volunteer company ? As far as we know,
there is hut two houses in Macon that
have been accustomed to do this tiling.
When there is announced a parade ot a
—mpatiy in which their employes are
members, it is tho custom of these two
lioueos to voluntarilv tell their clerks that
they can parade if they desire to do so.
These men aro doubtless prompted by
public spirit and pride in our military as
much as by a d-.airo to allow their clerks
ioaBonafclo recreation. Their thought
ful kindness is duly appreciated and you
may be sure their employes have too
much consideration in return not to offer
to stay in tho store when they see their
services oannot well be dispensed with.
Any man worth his salt will take all
the more interest in his employer’s busi
ness when the recreation is over, if for
no other reecon but to show h's apprecia
tion of the indulgence.
