aa ono cf the members bo alluded to, but
denied that in h:s ..pposilion to tbo mil he

instannu of the reckless manner in wbloh
the bill provided for internal Improve
ments, he referred to two rivers in Penn
sylvania so inoonsiderable that the
Speaker, nat>ve of that State, had never
beard or them.
That allusion brought out Mr. White,
of Pennsylvania, on whoso suggestion
these views had been putin the bill and
who deacribed these rivers as important
links in tho navigation of the Alleghany
acd Ohio aud on the other aide, Mr.
Wright and Bridges of Penn., who ridi

wish to be placed in tbe position in

Mr. Cox, of N. Y., spoke of a Ky. river,
provided for by tbo bill, as one which
could only be made a thoroughfare by
being macadamized, and alluded to other
rivers aa streams that could not afford a
dam by a mill site and could not affords

Hatbeway’s Haul.
Fall Rivbb, April 23.—The committee
appointed to wait on Hatheway, the de
faulting treasurer of tho Sagimore and
Borden City Mills, met the latter this
moruing, but by tho auvico of counsel he
refused to make further disclosures.
This determination is a bitter disap
pointment to tho director*, who expected
to find Hatheway willing to straighten
out the affairs of tho corporation. There
general indignation on the part of the
public that lie should now refuse to do
so. It ia quite evident that Hatheway
intends to take advantage of all legal
technicalities in order to escape criminal
indictment. Chaco will evidently take
the same course, and it is believed that
should Chaco ho held liable for irregular
notes, he will be forced into bankruptcy
instead of being arraigned for a criminal
offense. Chaco claims that he received
of Hatheway but a comparatively small
amount, nnd that, through the daplicity
and prevarications of tire latter, he had
involved some of his (Chaco’s) best
friends.
