THE AMATEUR NIXITBEL*.
llxsal success •! Oar corkalaglans.
List night the Amateur Minstrels had
the most brilliant enccess of all. The
finett audience that has gathered is Ral
ston Hall in five yeara greeted them, and
from the moment tho curtain rose on
the initial act of the performance until
it fell on the rollicking Ethiopian sketch,
the house manifested the most intense
and eager interest.
The andienca was composed of the
very best people of onr city, and not only
were all tbo seats occupied, bnt the out
er circle and the doorway were packed
with those who were compelled to stand.
Tho parlor entertainment opened with
an overture entitled "Mixed Candy,” ar
ranged especially for the Amateurs,which
was londly encored.
The ballad "Speak to Me” was sung
with striking effect by Mr. Arthnr Wcod,
and we have never heard him surpassed
in the execution of the piece last even
ing. The chorns was exqnisite.
Tho comic refrain, “Daffney, do you
love me ystr” by Mr. B. D. Clancy, was
immense.
“By the Little Brook that Hippies
Through tho Dale,” a ballad, was ele
gantly sung by Mr. W. B. Winter in hia
pure, sweet and cultivated voice, and ap
plinded to tho echo.
“Bon Home, Levy," comie ditty, by
Mr. Bridges Smith, was excellently ren
dered ani in a manner that took with
the audience.
The first portion closed with "A Knot
of Blue and Grey.” This was sung in a
stylo which of which professionals would
proudly boast, by Mr. Julian Price. His
rich voice brought out the great beauty
of tho exquisite piece.
The end men, Messrs. Clanoy and
Smith, were par cxcellance and Mr. Wood
as interloontor, all that could be wished.
“The Goblin Gang” made a new and ap
propriate finale, and by its novelty was
qnito attractive.
The olio was opened by jnst what
was down on the bills, an artistio song
and dance by MeBsra. Mike and John
Donahne. Their danoing was splendid,
the poetry of motion and grace. They

A Worthy Tribute.
Mr. Joseph E. Wells, Jr., a war mem
ber of the Macon Ydnnteers, and an ac
complished engraver, has executed a high
ly artistic and appropriate tribnte to be de
posited in the corner stone of the Con

It consists of a plate of solid silver, four
icches square, around which is engraved
a beanti'nl floral wreath. In the centre
ia a correct picture of the “Virginia,"
the first iron-chd war vessel ever bpilt
in the booth.
The Virginia was boilt upon the hull of
the United States man-of-war, Mernmic.
Over the Virginia is engraved ia semi-etr
cnl&r form, the words, “Confederate Iron
Clad,” under wbioh is the name, in large
letters, “Virginia.” Under the vessel,

The design ia aoenrately represented
by the artist, and is a handsome offering
from a gallant Boldier to the memory of
his fallen comrades.

The flute duet, “Then you’ll remember

of instrumental mnsio by two of onr
best porformers on that instrument, Mr.
R. EL Smith and Professor Van Horne.
Oao of the best acts of tho evening was
the scene between tbe “Big B’s” Messrs,

the freedom of genuine artists.
The “Old Tramps Reunion” was a miij

mirable soope for the display of Ethiopian

by Mr. R. D. Clanoy and Mr. Bridges

Their movement was perfect, graceful
and accurate, their poses in statue rep
