Naw Orleans, July 29.—In answer to
a letter from Collector Smithy, asking
for information on the subject. President
Chapin, of the Board of Health, says
that yellow fever exists ct tbe present
time to snch an extent that it would not
be proper to issue clean bills of health to
vessels leaving this port. The Board of
Health reports to noon total cases of fever
80, with 33 deaths.
Jacksonville, I1L, July 23.—At mid
night last night, Isaac Htmil rode np to
John Aogelo’s farm house, near tho city,
and asked to see Angelo’s daughter. An
gelo refused, at tbe same time ordering

preliminary examination to-day, John
and Patrick Sheehan, charged with com

reports passing within thirty miles of u

The Potter Investigation.
John D. Palmer continued, and said
that Packard, ou account of his previous
career in Louisiana, bad made himself ob
noxious to many public men. If witness
was asked if the election in Louisiana
was fair, be would say no. Tho senso of
the people there was that Tilden and
Nicholls were elected. He had heard of
no prosecutions against any parties
charged with committing tho Pinkston
outrage. He said to Wells and Ander
son that the Tilden electors were chosen ;
but that ho might, on a fair considera
tion of tbe question, come to a differont
conclusion,-but this conclusion should bo
arrived at on evidence that could bo
clearly put before tho public.
Witness satisfied himself as to the per
petration of tho Pinkston outrage by In
anities, and he supposed the political
parties thereby taking tho samo moans of
inquiry that ho did, oonid have also satis
fied themselves as to its pbrpetiatioc. He
told Kellogg that if Iheso things happen
ed in Illinois he, (witness,) wonld bring

Blackburn reports typhoid fever epidom-

Lake Charles, La, July 29.—Tho
oclipsa began at 2:45 p. nr. and ended at
4:45 p. in. The total eclipse occurred at
3:45, and continued one minute. Clouds
occasionally obscured tbe euu, but tho
visw at tho commencement, for most of
tbo duration, and for tho l&it half hour,
was wholly unobscurcd.
Galveston, July 29.—A special from
Fort Worth states that tho observation
of the edipso was successful. It was
taken with twenty-six instruments,notes
being token of the corona, cuspis, moon
limbs and all contacts but tbe last, which
a heavy cloud rendered a partial failure.
