Editors Telegraph [and Messenger: Id ref-
ersnea to Major Smyth’s letter published
in jour istno of the lGth of July pur
porting to aorreot errors sad misstate
ments of yonr Atlanta correspondent of
the lllth of Juno relating to tho marshal's
offiw, I beg loavo to say as to the relia
bility of tbo information, it was given
from the books of I ho U. 8. in the inat-
Hbai's office, required to bn left in a cer
tain form, showing the dote on wbiob a
warrant was issued, the day the arrest was
made, by whom made and when made.
It was presumed that this record and
book was correctly kept, snd by this
record Major Smyth had made, in nix
inonthr, one hundred and ninety-three
arrests, snd not two hundred and fifty-
six aa claimed.
Since tbo 7th of January to the
90th of June, four hundred and
•eventy-uiglit arrests bsve been made
under Marshal Fitzsimmons' administra
tion, without aid or assistance from the
military, owing, I believe, to public sen
timent, as he is supported and sustained
ty all good citizens in every section of
tne State.
I inlieve it is ttuo tint Major Smyth’s
chief deputy was with Marshal Fitzsim
mons three months. Respectfully,

The tables bad been spread, tbo banquet

Egestive Physiology.
The Use of the Spleen,
The'‘arientiBceye” to called. Is not only mis
taken aa to the true course of ingestion, but ut
telly blind to that of egeation of the disiutegrat
ed tissue, and the modern physiologist instead
of being able to “expound it witb precision and
facility," knowa literally nothing about it and
auema never to have had the tint conception of
the truth concerning it. that the liver is the
depurator of tho blood, and converts tbo disin
tegrated tisane into bile; that the bile thus com
posed ia carried through its ducts snd poured
into the intestine and discharged as an excre
ment ia the governing idea in connection with it,
nut it ia all perfectly fallacious, and will not bear
tho test cf the anatomical conditions, or the
known physiological facts that are by a H
knowledged.
llilie huaino's of the liter were the depuration
ol tlie nlood. common sente would insist that
some provision be made by which that that is
leaded with the dead debris should be brought
in contact with it. but there is absolutely no
provision ol the suit; c n the contrary, core seems
te havo been taken to keep everything the lea-t
offensive as tar Irom it aa possible, for not a drop
of tbo blood in the systemic veins where it may
be said to be concentrated, ran ever reach it, he-
raiiao it is entirely off their line.
Kgoatuin liegina m the capillaries precisely
whero ingestion ends, whrrc'tbo parts aru always
lining renewed and the wasto ia being carried
away, for it must be got rid ol u soon aa it dies.
This duly devolves upon the veins and they
bring it, not to the liver for the reason stated,
but to the right horfrl where tho foulest blood
fruui everywhere meets and mingles. This foul
blood is thrown by the heart upontbclnngiiwhotc
itia subjected to tlie action of tbo air and
emerges arterial blood, but there can be no ques
tion ol its still being loaded with the dead de
bris. If a doubt ol that fact remained the olfac
tories would sulro it for tho peculiar odor now
presents itself that is found concentrated in the
ower bowels, and between theso two points tba
mediant by which it is conveyed must exist, but
it is not by the liver, nothing coula reach the
lower bowels from the lungs by way ot the liver,
uot by the small intestines lor tbtio furnish
nothing lor excretion but the refute of aigestiou
which is always sw eet, nut tbo true medium is
theabdominaiarteriestbat ramify in numerous
branches along the whole circle ol the large in
testine , inside of which and nowhere else is de
posited tho (operate disintegrated tissue. The
blood thnsdepumtpd returns by tho portal vein
to tbo liver, bringing with it, not the detritus,
but I'je now solution ot digestion, which it ac
quires by etidnsmosis from tho small intes
tine. but this dues uot constitute all tbo ele
ments ot the now blood which it is the huiioems
of the liver to organize and send forth, for other
agencies ore at work to assist it, and the small ea-
tshlishment over the way at the spleen is all tho
lime engaged in tho production Irom the old
blood of new material for lbs groat combination.
Thus one discovery leads to anatber and tbo
great enigma ot the spleon that has puzzled and
set at naught that "scientiflc eye" for all time,
i« at last solved aud made intelligible. Thu new
element is mixed in the portal vein with the oth
er now material and all pass into tho liver
which has hitherto been the greatest enigma ol
all, forthough lit litorature is voluminous. I
make bold toaay that its real functions till now
havo never been conceived ot much lest under
stood hr any publicist that ever wrote a lino
concerning it . .
Happy would it hare been for the human fam
ily had doctors been content to regard it a myi-
loiy as they do the spleen, and K> treated it, but
they contrived tbit they were doing God service
while perverting its every action, aud were blind
as bats to its real Innctions. That is tbeir condi
tion to-day, bet as the business olthe portal cir
cle it the present subject 1 contne myself to that
and the spleen. The product ot the spleen exert*
a materially modifying influence upon the blood,
without which men. bad a* they are. would
be much moro ferocious, while their appetites
would bo so ravenous that it trould be difficult
to And them food encash to eat. Animals ran
live andthrive and fatten without the spleen.but
though its real purpose has never heretofore
been hinted at, every body should thank 1 rori-
denco that he has one, considering bow much its
presence contributes to the great amenities ot
bio tor without It the problem of civilization as
we nderstand. it would never havo torn solved.
These new elements together with what is
good of the old blood are oil combined in the
liver for reorganisation properly proportioned,
thoroughly mixed, chemically rombined and
duly roipumilated, and ready to be sent by the
heart express to all parts of the body to keep it
iu repair.. The circle ef the kidneys assists in the
work of depuration hut the portal circle hasa
triple duty, tor white it rarries in the products
of digestion and ot tho splren.lt bnnga to the cloa
ca the products of disintegration and from
youth to hoary age becomes the busy agent ol
imrrativr and egestive ptiysiokwy,
Tlius in concise form are presented my dis
coveries on these important subjects. Tneyare
presented for what they are worth, in the Arm
belief that they open up for still further investi
gation many of the most important questions,
practical a* well as theoretical, that cau be im
agined. I have no idea that 1 have yet grasped
their full signiAeanec. for it puts a naw lace on
everything connected with tha subjret. No
mere reform ran meet th-» ease, hot a ibcrougn
reversal, a complete rightabout, an absolute
revolution of old ideas mutt ho inaugurated, a
new departure must be had from the new
standpoints 1 have discovered and established,
for no physiologist after grasping the idea wiU
ever dispute them. That they are original need
not hedoubted. tor they hare been developed
daring the last two years under the public eje
in monthly papers and corrected or improved as
new light was abed upon the subject. It any
thing like them baa ever appeared anywhere in
print I am rot aware ol it. ‘“ rh

PROPRIETOR OF CLUB SI.LBLES,
MOTICE I
I have this day accepted the agency for Gilff & CO.’
Crescent Brewery
AURORA, INDIANA,
I have just completed a large refrigerating ice
house in my cellar, capable of holding 500 kegs ot beer,
I will keep the beer ice-cold all the time. It will be ship
ped here in Gaff & Co’s fine refrigerating cars, and will be
as good when it arrives as when first made. I will handle
both kegs and bottled beer. This beer is made especially
for the Southern trade, and is pronounced by all who try
it to be the best in the country. Messrs. Gaff & Co. are
men of ample means, and have used every facility they have
to make the AURORA BEER second to none in the
United States. Below I annex statements from reliable
merchants of several Southern cities who are handling these
goods:
I hare been handling tbo Aurora Boer lor four year., and
