THE CITY.
TUESDAY JULY 30.1878.

In the cue of the State «. William
aline Bill Holt, who m found guilty
murder, a new trial waerefniedby Judge
Hilly or, and a bill of exceptions to h

taken up to the Supreme Court.
An Honorable Dlsmlasal.
In Saturday’* iaue we noticed the:
charge of cheating and swindling had
been made ngalntt Bobert Hyman, color
ed, who it the proprietor of Brown’s
pond.
The accused was tried yesterday for
the offence before bis Honor Matt Free
man, whan the warrant was dismissed sod
his character vindicated.
An Unexpected nnower Bath
The swimming brigade, composed of
twenty young men, exourted to MoCall’i
mill pond at a late hour Saturday evening.
After enjoying e plunge bath and swim
mtng freely they had another bath, which
was gratuitously furnished from the foun
tains of Flavins. On their retnrn borne
they wire caught in the storm after eleven
u'oioek p. m., and were thoroughly drench
id. They retained singing end in high
giro over the enjoyment of two baths.
Buffalo.
We draw attention to the advertisement
of the nnivenity of Virginia, the prido
the Old Commonwealth, the success!
product of Jeffereons statesmanship,
whoso balls are crowded with tbo young
men from the South, tbo Woat and tbo
Noitb seeking tho higher; culture. We
are glad to noto tbo spleDdid additions
mada to the equipments in the last few
jnare by State action, and the mnniflocnoa
of such noble benefactors aa Brooks end
Coteoran.
TVooda on Fire.
The woods across tho river, above the
'■erautery, were again observed to be on
tiru Saturday, although the firo was not
as extensive as tho one noticed a fow
days since. The burning mentioned was
caused by the firing of a hornet’s nest by
somo negroes, who carelessly allowed tho
flames to get among Iho undergrowth
burning over aliout one hundred acres of
land and destroying much valuable lim
her. It was on tbe place of Mr. J. G.
Wilburn.
unitary Excursion to Augusta.

An arrangement ha9 been mado with
tbu authorities of tho railroad that will

Tho excursion has treen gotten up for

commanded its columns.
A most cnjoyablo excursion is offered

Hetrorolosicaf.
Tho rain fall on last Saturday night was
1 30*100. Tho quantity of rain fall for
tbe month to dato by tho record at Fio
Nono College, kept by Professor Dsly, is
2 30-100.
Tho drouth in the greater portions of
tbo oountry still continue?.
Kooky, Tobesofkee end Walnut creeks
are uoar about dried np.
Tbe water in the Oomnlgeo river began
to rise yesterday morning and rose oigh
teen inches before noon, which indicated
that there has been a heavy rain in somo
of tho counties above Bibb.
Before the rieo took place Iho low
water-mark was twenty-two feet below
tbe high water-mark of tbo great freshet
or April 3d, 1876.
Tho operations of the Macon Ice Fac
tory were about to be rotarded by tbe
low stage of the water in tho riTer, The
rise was very opportune and was as agree
able to Mesrrs. Peterson & Johnston as
tbe near approach of a nuptial day is to
soy two young gentlemen.
Passengers on the Southwestern trains
report a heavy rain yesterday morning
from along tho railroad from Barbour
county. Alabama, to Amcricus, Georgia;
and ou tbe Columbus road them wero
fine showers between Howard and Ge
neva.
During tho morning of yesterday tbo
weather waa oppressively warm. After
coon there waa a good breezo with thick
clouds overhead, but no rain.

Col. Henry J. Lamar and family are
also there, and the many friends and ad
mirers of bis faaoinaiiD^ daughter, Miss
V»lne, will rejoice to learn tiint After a
severe illness she has recovered.
Judge Grice and fflatlj are also there.
Air Ambrose Crnlcbfieid and wifo
have gone to Saratoga.
The Eclipse.
The great eclipse which has been prog
nosticated throughout the world,
veritably b-lieveoccurred at tbe appoint
ei time yesterday afternoon. From some
cause, which, however, is not a phenome
non, tho eclipse gave Macon the go-by.
We had made our calculations that the
distance from tho moon to Brown’s Mount]
where we expected to make our observa
tions, when the tout eclipse would take
place, was 223,636 miles, 2 forloogs, "
yards, 2 feet and 7 j inches; and that the
mean distance from the moon from the
earth was tbe short distance of only
about 10,000 miles further.
Tbe sun's distance we calculated to be
in the neighborhood of 93 or 94,000,900
miles—a few feet more or less daring tbe
hot weather weald not make mnob differ
cnee. We expected to see the corona
that makes tbe halo around tbe moon
glorious, and determine if there was actu
ally ozften In it or not. We had a spe
cial spectroscope mado for that purpose
We also had our most expert photograph
ists engaged for tbe pnrpose of making
copies of the only solar- eclipse which
would bo visible in America daring tbe
remainder of tbe oenlnry. Bnt alas,
there wereno uncanal changes in the
heavens. A cloud appeared about three
o’clock and remained over oar city until
after air p. w. Ho sn, moon nor stars
were seen.
Abont a quarter past five o’clock, when
the eclipse was to have taken place, there
was a little additional darkness which
lasted about two minutes, and then it
began to grow brighter until at 7 p. m.
when it was as bright as it had been dur
ing the three hours proceeding.
Passengers arriving on several trains
state that they observed the eclipse
twenty to thirty miles before reaching
Macon, and that tbe sight was grand,
gloomy, peculiar and aublime. We take
tbeir word for it, and believe that the
astronomical spectacle was exactly so.
Ono thing, howover, we can boast uI,
which is undeniable, and that is, that
had two eclipses : tho one the scientists
predicted, which wo did not see, and an
other in tho clouds winch shut out tho
wholo solar system from view. There
fore, weinairt that if wo wore not on the
lino of tbo "totality” of the eclipse
route, as defined by tho astronomers, we
bad a huge private eclipao of our own.
Tbe Horticultural Fair.
On tbo 31st of this month tbe third
annual convention of tho Georgia State
Horticultural Society will be held in tho
Masonic Temple at this place and con
tiaue two days.
Tho programme of the convention ex
ercises is very attractive and tbo discus
sions will bo very interesting and in-
■tractive to all fruit growers. There is
no charge for admission to theso cxer.
cises.
At the fruit exhibition there will be
small ebargo of twenty-five cents for ad
mission, which will bo appropriated to
the payment of hall rent and contingent
oxpensca while holding the fAir.
Mr. P. J. Berckmans, tho efficient pres
ident of tho Socioty expresses his opinion
that tho exhibition will bo a very credit
able ono. He writes that though tho ex.
cessivo heat has given fruit a rapid ten
dency to mature and many varieties of
peaches and other fruits which usually
ripen in August are already gone, thus
reduoing tho material generally exhibit
ed,still a great deal is left to make a fine
show, provided tho farmers will bring
out what they have.
Southwestern Georgia, Fulton and
Bichmond counties will bo well repre
santed. And in this connection wo would
urge the farmers and gardenera of Bibb
to bring ont their vegetables, fruits and
flower.!, so as to be ready for the exhibi
tlon on Wednesday morning. We hare
seon enough of the craps in Bibb to sat
isfy us that wo can make a favorable
exhibition if our producers will not fee 1
intimidated, and gather their productions
for tho display.
It is specially urged by those in ohargo
of tbo exhibition that Uio Bibb county
farmers will exert themselves, and bring
out their products. We commend tbo
request that has been mado moro to its
adoption than its consideration by those
to whom it is addressed. Let Bibb show
what she oan do under unfavorable sea
sons os well as fair.
Better Late than Never.
Thomas Williams was arrested on Sat-
rday afternoon by Sheriff T. M. Buck
ner, of Houston county, and officer Kicks,
of this plxco, on a warrant two years and
half old, for cow stealing. Tho prison
er was taken to Perry county cn Sunday
morning, to bo locked up until his trial
takes place.
A Fino Store with Family Apart
ments ror itenr.
Attention is called to tho advertise
ment in another column by Messrs. M.
K. Bogers and A. B. Boss, offering the
commodious store, with rooms well ar
ranged in the second story for family pur.
poses, at present occupied by Mr. George
Beggs, for rent. Tho location is a very
desirable one.
Editors 2elegraph and Messenger. I bare
just read in yonr paper of yesterday tho
communication signed ‘‘Native Geor
gian.” Too style and manner of attack
upon tbo University of Georgia, coming
from a patron makes it tbe most dam
aging communication I have ever read.
‘Native Georgian” says: "I havo be
come acquainted, moro or less, with the
University, through my sons, who idol
ize, as most students seem to do, the
school and its surroundings, which has
extended to them eo many opportunities
ter enjoy meat.*, and required of them so
little in tho cay of study and substan-
stial improvements, and of me so much
hard tarued money to pay for the folly.”
I am sorry tbat any parent should be eo
badly disappointed in the success of his
sons at the Uuivetsity. Now let us see
how mnch of the responsibility belongs
tho University, and how much to him.
In every catalogue which has been issued
for many years the following has been
Drinted and may t>e found on page 65 of
tbe last for 1878:
Library fee required of every
stndeni $ 5 00
Diploma fee 6 CO
Board in college boarding house,
per month
Room rent in college dormitories
per annum
Waabiog, fuel, lights fur sei-siou
abont
Neoessary expenses for a student
in Franklin College are per an
num 275 00
For a student in Bute Collese 240 00
For student enjoying privilege of
free tuition 200 00
Books and stationery are extra.
Tho expenses of a stndt-nt at this, or
any college, are principally dependent
upon tbe personal habits of each individ
ual, and upon tbe amount of ni ney al-
i-.iced him lyhis parents or guardian. In
most instanoes this is entirely too large.
The unlimited oommand of money con
stitutes the most dangerous temptation
which a yoone man in college can be
exposed. Tbe Faculty, therefore, earn
estly invite attentions of the patrons of
the University {p if T vportauce of tab.

leg in their own hand* the control of a
critter which no collegiate-regulations
can reach. If Nit.ve Georgian’s sons
"loitered around saloons a: nigbr, drove
livery horses and escorted young ladies to
entertainment*,’’ while st tbe University,
he should have inquired where they got
tbe money which enabled them to do so.
Again, the faculty have always sent cir
culars, and for seme time past, monthly,
to parents and guardian*, with the grade
of the'r sons or ward*. If “Native Geor
gian” scrutinized these circulars, bo most
have known whether bis sons were mi
king ''substantial improvement" or
whether he was paying ont “hard earned
money” for "folly.” If be allowed his
sons too much money in tbe face of the
remonstrance of the faculty, and finds at
last that they bad “forgotten how to
tlsck shoes, bring water, cut wood, hold
a plough or wheelbarrow, to drive a wagon
or cultivate a garden, or don’t even know
how to wear old clothes, boats or hats, “
is it fatr, to blame the University man
agement with revolts which tbe faculty
have done all in tbeir power to avert by
invoking parental aid ?
Without stopping to defend the Faculty
from tbe charge of “gradually and softly
and Eerenely gliding into notions and
methods of avoiding labor and personal
care,” I will call attention to the fact that
many yonng men who make the money
which pays their board and “washer,
women’s” bills, while in college, find tbat
the amount ot work “required of them’
fully occupies their time at the expense
often of tbeir health. If a Btudent does
all the Faculty requires of him, he will
have no time to “loiter around saloons
drive livery horses," even if the parent
is indiscreet enough to furnish him the
money, against which tho Facility have
so "earnestly” protested.
, Yonng men with a large supply of
money have often contracted habits of
dissipation at tbe University for tbe last
forty years, to my certain knowledge,
butnooftener tbore than ilse where. At
no time in the history of tbo University
has this beer less true than it has been
for the last fenr years. In nine cases ont
of ten tbe parent is tho one who can beat
control this master, by withholding
money. A high-spirited boy will not
drink at tbe expense of others. No col
lege discipline has ever controlled dissi
pation half so well as the patrons can.
If they would require their sons and
wards to keep a cash-book, and show
how every cent of money with which
they were furnished was disposed of,
would do more to reform the University
in tbe matter of which “Native Geor
gian” so bitterly complains than any pos
sible action of tho Board of Trustees or
Faculty. Nosco.

My wife has also tried it on her chickens, which
were dying with the cholera, and she has not lost
one since ahe began using it. I can testify that
there is no discount on Sboenfeld’a Stock Feed,
and recommend it to all stockraisera. I had tried
all other remedies on my hogs with no benefit
and hod almost concluded to give up trying to
cure them, but thought 1 would give your Feed
a trial, and did so, and now they aro all well.
