Egestive Physiology.
The tTso of the Spleen,
1 ho "scientific eye” so-called, is not only mis
taken as to the true course ot ingestion, but ut
terly blind to that ot egestion ot the disintegrat
ed tissue, snd the modern physiologist instead
ol being abl« to "flipound it with precision and
facility.” knows literally nothing about it and
seems never to hsve bsd the first conception ot
the truth concerning tt. Ibat the liver is the
depurstor of tbo blood, and converts tbedisin
tegrated tissue into bile; tlmt the bile thus com-
lKised is carried through its ducts sod poured
into tlio intestmo and discharged as an excre
ment is tho governing idea in connection with it,
but it is all js-rfcrtly f sllacion*. and will not hear
the lest el the anatomical condition*, or tbs
known physiological farts that are by a
knnwlcdgcd.
It ibe business ol the liver were the depuration
ot the nlood. common eense would insist that
some provision be made by which that that ia
loaded with the dead debris should be brought
in contact with it, but there is absolutely no
provision ol tbe sort; tn the contrary, rare seems
In have been taken to keep ererything the least
offensive as far from it as possible, for not s drop
of the blood in the systemic veins where it msy
bo said to be concentrated, can ever reach it, be
cause it is entirely off their line.
Election begins in the rapillaries preeiselv
where ingestion ends, where^lin torts are always
being rriiowod and tho waste is being carried
away, for it must be got rid of as soon as it diet,
This duty devolves upon the veins and they
bring il, not to tlieliver for the reason slated,
but lo tbe right heart where tbo foulest blood
from every where meets snd mingles. This foul
blood is thrown by the heart upon thi-lungs where
tt is mihjected to the action of tbe sir and
emerges arterial blood.but tliere can be no ques
tion of its still being loaded with the dead de
bris. If a doubt of that fart remained the olfac
tories would solve it for tbo peculiar odor now
proeenteitaelfthst is found concentrated intbe
owor bowels, end between tbeso two point* tbe
medium by which it is conveyed must exist, bat
it is not by tbe livtr, nothing could resell tbo
lower bowels from tbe longs by way of tbe liver,
not by the small intestines for these furnish
nothing lor excretion bnt the refuse of digestion
which is always sweet, but the true medmmis
tho abdominal arteries that ramify in numerous
branches along the whole circle ol tho Urge in
testine . inside of which and nowhere else is da
ted the separate disintegrated tissue. The
id thus ueparatpd returns by the portal vein
to the liver, bringing with it, not the detritus,
but the new solution of digestion, which it ac
quires by endosmoais from tho small intes
tine, but this doe:’ not constitute all tbo ele
ments of the new blood which it is the business
of the liver to organise nnd send forth, for oilier
agencies are at work to assist it, snd the small es
tablishment over the way at the spleen U all the
timo engaged in the production Irom the old
blood ol new material for the great combination.
Tbus one discovery leads to another and the
great enigma of tbe spleen that has puzzled and
set at nsnght that “scientifle eye” for alt time,
is st last solved aud made intelligible. This new
element ia mixed in the jwrtal vein with the oth
er new material snd all pass into the liver
which bos hitherto been the greatest enigma of
all. for though its literature is voluminous. 1
make bold to say thst its reel functions till now
hsve never been conceived of much loss under
stood by any publicist that over wrote aline
concerning it ...
Happy would it have been for the human fam
ily had doctors been content to regard it a mys
tery as they do the spleen, and so treated ft, bat
they conceived thst they wero doing God service
while perverting its every action, and were blind
as bats to its real tnnclions. That is their oondf
tion to-day. bat as the business ot tho portal cir
cle is the present subjeot I coniine myself to that
snd the spleen. The product of the spleen exerts
a materially modifying influence upon the blood,
without which men. bad as they are. would
be much more ferorions, while their appetites
would be so ravenous thst it would bo difficult
to And thorn food enough to est. Animals can
live snd thrive snd fatten without the spleemhut
though its reel purpose bus never heretofore
been hinted at, every body should tbsnk Provi
dence that be has one. considering bow much its
presence contributes to the great amenities of
ltle for without It tbe problem of ariluation as
we nderatand. it would never have bean solved.
These new elements together with what is
good of tbe old blood are all combined m the
liver for reorganitation properly proport ioned,
thoroughly mixed, chemically combined and
duly cor jw-eulated, and ready to be sent by tbo
heart express to all parts of tho body to keep It
in repair. The circle cf tbe kidneys assists intbe
work ot depuration bnt tho portal circle has a
tripls duty, for while it carries in the products
oldicestion snd ol tbespleeiut brings to the cloa
ca the products ol disintegration and from
youth to hoary age becomes tbe busy agent ol
lucrative and egestive phjslologj.
Thus In concise form are presented my dis
coveries on tbeso important subjects. Tney are
presented for what they are worth, in tho firm
belief that they open up for still further investi
gation many of the mott important questions,
practical as well as theoretical, thst can be im
agined. I bare no Wo* that I hsve yet grasped
their foil significance, for it pats a new face on
everything connected with the subject. No
mere reform can meet tbs case, hut a thcnmgn
reversal, a complete rightabout, an absolute
revolution of old ideas must bo inaugurated, a
new departure must bo had from the now
standpoints 1 have discovered and established.
for no physiologist after grasping the idea wiU
ever dispute tlu-m. That they are original need
not bedoubted. for they hare txvn dereiopod
during tbe hut two years under the public eye
in monthly papers and corrected or improved as
new light was shed upon tho subject. If any-
thing like them baa ever appeared anywhere in
print I am not aware of.it. but if such exist,
would bo pleased to be notified of the fset. Their
influence on practice mav not be great m my
time, but I hsve faith in the future whose sages
will be reedy to accord a full endorsement, .

I have just completed a large refrigerating ice
house in my cellar, capable of holding 500 kegs of beer,
I will keep the beer ice-cold all the time. It will be ship
ped here in Gaff & Co’s fine refrigerating cars, and will be
as good when it amves as when first made. I will handle
both kegs and bottled beer. This beer is made especially
for the Southern trade, and is pronounced by all who try
it to be the best in the country. Messrs. Gaff & Co. are
men of ample means, and have used every facility they have
to make the AURORA BEER second to none in the
United States. Below I annex statements from reliable
merchants of several Southern cities who are handling these
goods:
I hare beau baudling the Aurora'Beer lot-four yeara.

Wo hare handled the Aurora Beer aince 1873, and now wo can uso no oilier beer nthis market.
We have had abipmenta from Milwaukee. St. Louiaand Cincinnati sieje. but no go. They all prefer

about 400 Germans, all of whom pronounce the Aurora ro^th^b^ererm^hemarket.^
I have employed Mr. Jacob Russell to assist me m hand-
linq the beer, and he will call upon the parties ivho sell beer
daily, and supply their wants, or try to. His long experience
in the business is a guarantee that the beer will be properly
handled. I will have a wagon and horses in a few days to de
liver the beer. 1 will guarantee every keg of the Aurora Beer
to give satisfaction. I will keep from 300 to 500 kegs in stock
