roads. Tbe Ashtabula disaster cost the

$700,000, and that at Revere, Mass., six

in $500,000. The management of the
Old Colony Company is now settling
damages with those injared and the heirs
of the killed in the Wollaston accident,
and it is estimated that $325,000 will be

and it is usually ooastderei rather cheap-

From a late Speech.1
Years ago this State honored me with
one of its seats in the greatest parlia
mentary body on eaitb, and it oame to
pass that a chair and desk central In ths
chamber fell to mt; sometime since Sen*
ator Hill, of ..Georgia, sometimes famil
iarly oaHed “Ben" Hill, the same who
lately wrote a letter to Mr. Hayes, oame
to me blandly - and said politely and
pleasantly, “Bonator, I mean ns offense,
bat I have taken your seat, it is a good
seat, I ahonld like it, and I have told the
Strgeant-at-Axms to pot me down for it;
after the 4 h of Marob, 7'.>, yoa will not
need it; yoar State will go Democratic,
and j6q-will not come back, and I thought
1 would make sure of yoar scat.** I said
he was weloome to engage it, that no of*
fense was taken, that New York had many
sons worthier than I, and very likely some
of them would eacceed me. To-day, in
the oern, thinking of the drift of tbingfe
in the Sontb, the incident oame back. It
jtesma that oar Southern neighbors, al
most ao&Qlmonsly perbap*, want every-
hody’seeat sod everybody's shoes; at d the
one seat refeired to is a small matter,
but when tbs other eeats oome to be con

Publicity has already been given to the
suggestion that wome day in the not re*
mote fntara the Ropablioan party would
be disposed to take the eleotlve fracohiae
from the colored people. Honest Repub
licans in Congress or oat of it never
made |i{^j iffecret of ttn fact that'
the .real object of the party in
conferring negro saffi-age was
ktrecgtfcen ard perpetixate its hold npon
the government In this the Republicans
hate been woraliy disappointed. The
preotioM resnlt of tbeir efforts has been
to give to their opponents Ihirty-flve ad
ditional votes io the eleetoral college and
in the of Representatives. The
deliberate^macnfaotuie of, wholesale ca-
iamniea upon the Sooth in this and in for*
nter oampalgns oannot make a solid
North, »Hhongh it has been carried on in
that hope. The next move, therefore, of
tbe diseomfitted Republican will be to take
wwsy the boon which they conferred open
the negro. By advices received here to
day from Sooth Carolina it ia learned that
' Governor Hampton in a lite speech pro
claimed that he had been approaohed by
prominent Republicans, among them a
brother-in-law cf ■ cabinet officer, with
propositions to deprive the negro of his
vote. Sceh propositions were, of coarse,
Indignantly rejected by Governor Hamp-
toll. If Governor Hampton consistently
can do so beooghi to give tbe names ot
these Republicans to the public.
