Thb Suit will be printed every day during tho
year to come. Its purpose and method will be
the same as in tho past: To i resent all tho news
in a readable shape, und to tell the truth though
the heavens fall.
• W H ® ?F*'" k* 3 been, is, and will continue to bo
independent oi everybody and everything save
the Truth and its own convictions ot dnty. That
is the only policy which an hones) newspaper
need have. That Is the policy which has wonfor
this newspaper tho confidence and friendship ot
a wider constituency than waa ever enjoyed by
any other American Jcurnai.
The Scs ia the newspaper for the people. It
is not forihe rich man against thopooi rnan.or
for the poor man agaiEst the rich man, hut it
soeksto do equal justice to all interests in tho
community. It is not the organ of any person,
class, sect or party. There need be no mystery
about its lovos and hates. It is for tho honost
man against tho rogues every time. It is for the
honest Democrat as against tho dishonest Re
publican, and for tho honest Republican as
against tlie dishonest Democrat. It docs not
take its cue from tho utterances of any politician
or political organization. It gives its support
unreservedly when men and moasuros are in
agreement with the constitution and with tho
principles upon which this republic was founded
for tbe people. Whenever the constitution and
constitutional principles are violated—aa in tho
outrageous conspiracy ol 1S7C, by which a man
not elected wss placed in tho President’s office,
where he still romains-it speaks out for the
right. That is the Sun’s idea of independence.
In this respect there will be no change in its
programme for 1579.
The Bus has fairly earned the hearty hatred of
rascals,; frauds and humbugs of all torts and
sizes. It hopes to deserve that hatred not les3
in tho year 1379 than in 1S78, 1877, or anyyear
gone by. The Sun will continue to shine on the
wicket with unmitigated brightness.
While thelesson9of tho past should should be
kept constantly before the people, the Sus does
not propose to make itsoll in 1H79 a magazine of
ancient history. It is printed for the ben and
women of to-day, whose concern is chiefly with
the affairs of to-day. It has both tho disposition
ana the ability to afford its readers the prompt
est, fullest and most accurate intelligence of
whatever in the wild world is worth attention.
To this end the resources belonging to well es
tablished prosperity will be liberally employed.
Tbe present disjointed condition of parties in
this country, and the uncertainty ot tbe future,
loud an extraordinary significance to the ovonts
of tbe coming year. The (.discussions of tbe
press the debates and acts of Congress, mid the
movements of the leaders, in overy section ot
the republic, will have a direct bearing on tbo
Presidonlion election ot 1333—au event which
musG be regarded with the most anxious interest
by every patriotic American, whatever his polit
ical idcat or allegiance. To these elements of in
terest maybe added the probability that the
Democrats will control both houses of Congress,
the increasing feebleness of tho fraudulent ad
ministration, and the spread and strengthening
everywhere of a healthy abhorrence of fraud in
any form. To present with accuracy and clear
ness tbe exact situation in each of its varying
phases, and io oxpound according to its well
known methods the principles that should guide
usllhrough the labyrinth, will bo an important
