Atmnta, Go., November 6,1878.
To the General Aeiemfcly:
A crievioue necessity has been imposed
os me to demand at your bauds a thor
ough investigation of my motives and
conduct as the Executive of Georgia in
iiluing tho State's endorsement upon tho
Loads of the Northeastern Railroad.
This necessity has been created by widoly
orcnlsUd slanders and innendoes, vile
tnd Malignant, and eo mondaclous and
nicked as to make all comment and para
phrase upon thorn uttorly futile. Noth
ing but a thorough eifting of my every
motive and act in regard to these bonds,
u far as human insight and judgment
no reach them, can satisfy aggrieved
honor, or give such entire assurance to
the people of Georgia, as they have a
right to demand in the premises. To a
men who values his good name far moro
than life, it would bean act of supremest
injustice to deny tho mostplonary vindi
cation rendered in tho mo3t august and
authoritative form known to the laws, cr
to public opinion. To the people of this
Commonwealth it is of tho lost conse
quence that they should know, beyond
ell perudvenlurc, that tho man who fills
ttUeircall tbo chief seat of authority,
is above reproach or suspicion.
My denunciation of an awful and stu
pendous dander, forged and uttered to
dishonor me, will not be enough. The
General Assembly of this State—a co-or
dinate power—ie appealed to for that
justice which, while it will, I know foil
•ell, exonerate mo as a man, will also
(indicate the fair faino of Georgia, ai-

oooarred hero a few montbs einoe, the
particulars of which I have just learned.
It was on tho day the memorable oyoloue
parsed over Lone Treo and Clark’*. Tile
sky was streaked In tbe northwest with
vivid flashes of light, and a terrible
rumbling sonnd made known that a
dreadful storm was Imminent. A mas
sive blaok clond was extending a whirling
finger toward tbe earth and sweeping
with great fnry whatever came before it;
Jonnto—a girl .who was working at a cer
tain hotel here—was basy at the stove
preparing for tho next meal. _ Hear
ing a rattle at the side door, Jennie went
to the door and opened it. As she did so
she was caught from the doorway by the
whirling wind and carriedover the houBO,
turning nronnd and round in tho air a3
she went, and after approaching the
ground on tho other aide she again arose,
and was taken by the whirling wind over
tho stores and dealings a distance of
threo-fonrtha of a mile, being lowered so
that ber feet could touch tho ground as
many as eight times during the trip.
Exhausted, but in au erect position, she
was at last lowered to tbe earth as lightly
as a feather would fall, having received
no material injury, thongh almost frantic
with fright. The storm proceeded on
its way, leaving her in sight of the town,
and in half an hour she again put iu an
appearance at the hotel, where anxious
friends were bewailing her sudden and
mysterious departure.
