PittcBCko, Pa., April 30.—A bold bat
uusuoseeaful attempt was made to-day
to rob the Workingmens’ Saviogs Bank,
on Ohio street, Alleghany. The book,
keeper cf tho bank had gone to dinner,
leaving the cashier, George L. Walter,
alone. Two men entered the bank, and
one of teem advancing to the rear coun
ter asked silver for a dollar bill.
When the cashier advanced with the
change in his hand, he was confronted
with a oocksd revolver and told to make
no noise or ho wonld be shot. Dropping

f ailant, who then olambered up and got
inside and was reaching for the money

excited still, with his hand on his pistol

went to meet Cox at the door, saying
“Cox, let as slop this. I do not want to
kill yon, nor do I want yon to kill me. It

not mot bim as promised. Witness to'd
them not to bavo any difficulty there.

out. Cox took Alston by tbe arm and

ing his right hand on hie pistol and

ness insisted on their not having a diffi

door, and said: “Tnis matter has got to ha
settled here and now.” Nelm*, the prin
cipal keeper of the penitentiary, here
entered, and witness appealed to him to
prevents difficulty. Alston said to Cox:
“I will not have any difficulty with you
unless I am forced to." Cox said, "Then
I will force you ” Some demonstration
was made by Cox; witnees heard Alston
nay twice, "Cox, are you going to bhootr

He did not hear Cox's reply. Alston
rose from hia chair, and with his head
bang down, crossed the floor. Cox
crossed a little behind on a parallel line.
Alston suddenly wheeled and drawing
his revolver presented it. Cox had

ston fired a self - cocker twloe,
rapidly. Of three shots neither
took effect. Alston tired a-ain, stepping
to tbe right at eaoh fire, Cox dodging
and stepping to his right, trying to oa*
hia pistol. Alston’s fourth shot hit Cox
in the mouth. At hia sixth effort the
pistol snapped, when Cox rose, took a
Jong step forward, placed hia pistol to
Alston's temple and fired. Alston reeled
and fell. Cox laid down She pistol, re
marking : "We are both dead men.” Al
ston wo* calm and conciliatory. Oox
was more excited and determined in man
ner. Alston did not ebow that he had a
piatol until he drew and fired. Witnees,
just before the firing, thought the fight
was about abandoned. The pistol Alston
bad belonged to witness and clerk Morphy >
Mnrpby and Howard were interested in
the convict leases.
Defendant’s counsel were severe in
their crt-bi t iamiuhtion, developing al#o
that n port of the line of defense would
be to establish a conspiracy to kill Cox.
They would prove that Mnrpby (*f
bished Alston; with the pistol, and
that Murphy and Howard, during
the fight, were conoealed in tbe daxk
room of the Treasurer's office, coming out
immediately after, and Murphy aecuring
the piatol used by Alston, and that How
ard asked at once tbat nothing be aaid
about their being m the room. T^ie the
