Panama, April £8.—Tbo first naval en.

going on in South Ameriaa, took place on
the 14th off tbo river Lao, between the
Chilian corvette Magallanis ou one
side, and tbo Peruvian vessels Union

The Peruvian vessels sailed from Cal.

Oa their arrival at that-point they found
the harbor deserted. They then pro
coeded north, and when abreast of the
Lm, sighted the Chilian vessel. A sharp
firing was maintained two hours, but it
■pprare that the damage inflioteJ was
slight. The Chilian vessel bad six guns
with which to opposo twenty, and after
burning a little powder without effect,
the Chilian captain concluded to with,
draw from the fight, wbioh he did, run
ning away easily from tho Pernvian

No report of casualties have been mado
