well, the Albany Guards magnificently,

Tbedr.t prlzi was won by the Albany
(lairds, and the second by the Tbomas-
ville company. The regatta was closely
eoatealod. The single snail race was won
by the .Innlata, Captain Nelson Tift, Jr.
Several eholla capsized.
The first rasa was a running milo dash'
beat two in three. Too startsra were
Lidy Gay, Whirlwind and Sweet Emms.
Whirlwind won the first heat, after which
tbe jadgea obanged the riders on aooonnt
of jookbjing. Iiidy GAy took two straight
heats and won. Last time, 1:611.
The acoond was a lino trotting raee,
milo heats, 2:40 olasa, best throe in five.
In the flr.t beat there were three entries
Mmole Tilden, King Philip and Hattie
Maek. it was a bad start, Ilattio Mick
behaving badly. The beat was won by
Minnie Tilden, with King Philip aosond,
and Hattie Mack third. Tima 3:00.
In tbe aeoond beat Hattie Maek was
withdrawn. The bast was an exceeding
ly closo one end was won by King Philip,
with Minnie aeoond. Time, 2:60.
The third beat was won by Minnie,

The fourth beat was also won by Minnie,

Lucy Jim wa9 tho only entry for the

The Fair closed this evening, the Soel-
tty sooring a daaided triumph, and every
body is highly ploasod. Tho management
was remarkably goo 1 and tbe Association

tional CnrUtUn Convention has adopted
a report of tha exeantlve committee, re
commending that the Beoond Sunday in
November next bo made a day of speoial
prayer for invoking God’s blessing on

Atlanta, Ga., May 23.—A special to
tbe Constitution says: At Kingston this
morning Thompson and Joseph Morris,

Thompson Morris followed Burroughs to
the depot and Blapped bis faoe. Bur
roughs drew a sties, Joseph Morris
snapped a pistol at Burroughs, who com
menced firing on his assailants, and re

pistols, then throwing rooks nntil both
fell from wounds. Thompson died in
thirty minutes,

Savannah Ga., May 23.—A special
dispatch to the morning Newt says
Kelley (white) was hsDged to-day at
Blackshear, Ga., for wife murder. He
confessed, and said the man who caused
him to kill her was present. Fifteen
hnndred people were present. He died
apparently unconcerned.
Lakk Uhabi.es, La., May 23.—Absa
lom W. Ford was banged here to-day for
the mnrder of Dr. Joseph Bazee, Jane,
1878. He broke jail here last winter,
after sentence, and was recently recap
tured in Henderson, Texas, after being
desperately wounded. He afterwards
broke bis wounded leg in attempting to
escape from tho Henderson county jail L
and consequently had to be supported by
the sheriff and depatios to the scaffold,
whero ho was seated in a chair. Thong h
suffering intense pain in the effort to use
hia wounded leg, hia features were calm
and composed daring tho reading of the
death warrant and tbe prayers of the
priest. He occasionally puffed a cigar,
looked composedly at the sky and at the
crowd of five hundred persona present.
He did not show tho slightest tremor.
His contortions were violent for five min
utos, and he lived nearly twenty min.

was five lengths ahead of Clyde, Hamp
ton third uud Grenadier last, and five

States Circuit Conrt to-day. evidence in
tbe “gold cases’* of the United States
against ux-Gov. rnor William Smith was
concluded. After some discussion, Judge
Hughes gave a statement and instructions
to the jury. The instructions aro to tho
effect that if the jury believe, from tho
evidence, that the defendant waa defaeto
Governor of the dr/aclo government of
Virginia, which bald authority in the
State for Aomo time previous to April,
18C5, und that ha was acting in tbe per
formance of hia dntios as rnch Governor
on tbh second of April, 18C5, when ha re-
coived tho five thousand dollars in gold,

fendant’s dnty, nfter that date, ns Gov.
ernor, to continue tho performance of
hia datiAs over the torritoiy of Virginia
for necessary purposes of governmenr, to-
wit: Tho preservation of life and pro

Washington, May 23.—In the Saoate,
after remarks from several Senators, tbe
bill making subsidiary coins exchangeable
for lawful money of tho United States, it
was reported back to tho Senate and the
amendment made in the Committee of
ilio Whole agreed to. It was then road
the third timo and passed.
The Senate then took up tho bill rela
tive to the transportation of animals, bnt
without action went into executive ses
sion, and afterwards adjourned until
Monday.
The Gabioet discussoj points of the
veto to day.
Tha legislative bill will probably reach
tho President to-morrow, in which case
the veto will be sent in on Monday.
May returns to the department of ogri-
ontmre show that the average wages of
labor, without board, in yearly employ
ments have declined from 525 29 per
month to $20.26, or 4 S per oent. daring
the ps-t year. Tho general tone of cor
respondence ia hopeful of a revival of in
dustry, and tbs surplus of anitnployed
labor is growing less. Good labor osn
generally dud employment at fair prioes.

New York, and will then begin taking in

bridges, the Lambeth, Vauxhail, Albert,
Battersea end Chelsea will be freed from

Charleston, May 23. — Ex-United
Stales District Attorney Corbin, who
here as counsel In the railroad cases be

to-day at the instance of tbe Attorney-
General of the Stale,in a civil anit pending
against him for the recovery of $24,000.
The origin of the snit is as follows: In
1870 the State retained Corbin to prose-
oate a oiaim against a phosphate mining
oompatiy, for phosphate royalty due the
State. A judgment for $23,000 was recov
ered and Corbin paid into tbe State
Treasury $206, retaining the balance,
which he claimed 03 couneel fees. The
State proposos to allow him only $3,COO
and expsuBeB, which was the
award of a refereo as his fee, and tbe
present snit againBt him was instituted
for $24,000. Corbin gave satisfactory
bond to answer the snir, and abide the
pru.-esa of the court.
