A BT.SI8SD RILUT.
Tbe piMAga by the Senate of the leg'
ijlatif# bill b„ put a stop to the shower
0 f gab wherewith that body has bored
the ciuatry for ao man; weary elaja, and
therefore fully juatiflea the ubb of the
abora caption. Tne Senato is nothing it
not loquacioue theao latter daya, and bids
fair to loae, in a few years, its former
claim* end character aa the deliberative
brooch of the Congress. Since Means,
Beck, Blaine and Hill hare been promo.
t«d to it,the change ie especially notice-
able, and some old fogies aigh and shake
their beads, and lament what they call
its decadenoc*.
I don't share their gloom. The fact is
lbs Senate needed juat exaotly the lively
■bakirg up the gentlemen named above
hava given it. Tbey have lifted it ont of
tea rata, aa it were, put the nearly siag-
n*ot tlood in briak circulation, and made
things lively all aronnd. There may be
)*e* dignity, and deportment, and owl-
i.li gravity, but then there is a deal more
fua and 1'fe. and the casual stanger in
the gallery does not feel ao much incli
ned to get up and go out, or go to aleep,
m formerly. Tbe country owes the gen
tlemen I have named a debt of gratitude
tor this reform, wbich ought to take
some substantial shape. If these Senators
would only pool their Issues
in another direction and suc-
oaaifally, they would crown them
selves with fresher laurels. The Senate
Is nearly if not quite as impolite, not to
my unmannerly body aa the House. Tho
o immodest rales of oonrtesy, as com
monly understood, are almost universally
violated. The moment a Senator gets on
his pins and opens bis mouth, that mo-
men*, oftentimes, even bis nearest neigh
bor seems seized with an argent need to
write, or read, or talk with his neighbor
on tbe other aide. I baTO seen somo ex-
bibilions or tbia cbaraoier wbich would
have done discredit to tbo legislative
bodies in tbo rudest and roughest days
of some of our western territories.
The great Conkling is one of {the
moat conspicuous sinnors in this re*
gaid bnt many otbors are nearly as
bad. In fact, to nsn a homely
phrate, ell ‘‘are tarred with tbo same
brush.” But Conkling is conspicuously
derelict, and actually , ocma to glory in
bis rudeness. Uo also does another
ugly thing with an air that actmllyseoms
to say: "Regard me, and admire the man-
neria which I mako even tho tiimmmg
of my nails a thing of bounty and a joy
foravor." I havo aeon him ent and pol
ish and scrapo for half an honr at a time,
and his faoo actually light up aa bo pans
*d to examino the results of bis work.
By tbo way, I suppose, you brw that
Oonkling bad been complimented by hav
ing the Bruce baby named for him. It is
rumored tbut Blaine isn’t altogether
satisfied with this arrangement. C.m't,
Pinchback or somo other statesman of
that color namo a baby after Jim?
PBirABI von SAD saws.
1 think tbero will bo a dead or domen-
itd statesman from Ohio in a few days—
possibly by Saturday. I moan tho Hon
ifr. 'Warner, who has been in a stato of
iniod for several days over what ho calls
bis silver bill. He has had a pretty
rongh time with if, and has been forced
to stand by and see tho bantling kicked
sod cuffed, and its facn unmercifully
scratched by tho Radioala end bard money
Democrats. I may not be a jadge, bnt
it strikcB mo that tbo brat bad not bad
one kick or entf too much, and that tbo
country will be tbo gainer if It is sum
marily sat down upon and mashed to
death. But, Lord! how crazy Warner is
shunt it.
Ho thinks, talks and dreams of noth
ing else, A hen with one obicken, or a
boy in his first pair of boots id nothing
to him. I have bad some good fun this
week watching Warner’s antics, and tho
more I see of aim tho more alarm I feel
sthiafstoif tho bill finally fails. If it
don't kill him it will bring on fits. I
think somebody ought to suggest to tho
Speaker to have tho coinmittoo to ac
company tho remains to Ohio named in
advance, for I hardly think Warner can
possibly survive tho death of his darling.
If it isn’t killed outright, there is tho
most obcerfnl probability that it will be
so banged anil battered that ho won’t
know or own it. How era tbo Demo
crats expect to carry tho country next
year after committing themselves to such
crazy financial schemes, I fail to oven
imagine. They only servo to divide in
and solidify tho Radicals.
TUE USUAI. WEEKLY VETO
will, I judge, come along next Monday
or Tuesday. Rutherford baa grown so
fond of them that he keeps his Altorney-
tisnersl pretty busy getting them up,
and tbe stork ou hand is now. as the ad
vertisements say, "full and selsot. ’ Af
ter the uixt one comes tho Democrats
will havo to put ou tboir wisdom caps,
and do somo drop thinking as to what
card they will play next. I do not think
they can possibly he so fat wilted ns to
conclude tJ adjxnn without passing tho
appropriation bills. I see somo ouch in-
Umatiows in certain newspapers, but
can't belief a tiny havo any founda
tion. Tb-i party now bu an excel
lent is.no upon which to go to
tho country, but to fail on or
refuse to pass those bills would render
it utterly worthless. Therefore, I be
lieve tho bill will to passed, and that
upon the issue of "bajonots at tbo polls'’
tbo Democrats can cairy tbo elections in
1SSO. I fuel sure they can and will cap
ture tho next House if they act with only
moderate wisdom. But jnsl so euro aa
they go fighting Hayes with all the odds
against them, as they oloarly aro in this
«n,e they will bo beaten, and that badly.
I know it is right hard on somo of our
Northern and Western brethren to stand
this sort of thing, but lot them take it
out in gritting their teeth und shaking
their Arts.
