Editors Telegraph A Messenger—Perhaps
a letter from this plato msy interest some
of your roadeis. c'hsrleeton is truly a place
of petrified grandeur and decayed magnifi
cence ; it seem j as if the fabled spell of eleop
had f&Uon npon her people and her indus
tries and ehe was doomed to elnmher on for
ages nntil some gonitis awakes hor with a
ju.8. On every hand ono meets crumbling
evidences of wealth and elegance which have
long since gone. Yet in bur desolation sho
stands qnoomike and proud, and though her
aoeptro has been tom away and hor treasures
squandered by aliens and elavee, her refine
ment and boanty remain. In three days
wanderiDgs abont the city I'vo nut heard tbe
stroke of a hammer or trowel. Masons,
carpenters and painters seem to havo do-
Betted tho city and no whoro does ono see
evidences of xbeir recant labors. The peo-
pto talk of improvements in bnsinoaa and
muro prosperity and of a grand timo in the
i-.definite future, like children talk of when
they will become men and womon. They
aoem to bo dreaming and waiting, unm.nd-
ful of tho truth that things tom upas rapid
ly wb'Is ono ie working ae when one is
waiting.
ABOUT TOWN.
I The moat attractive place ia of coarse the
Battery. What tho Central Park ia to New
Yoik, ths Battery is to Charleston. Hero,
every afternoon, the wealth, tbe beauty and
fasti on gather, to drive, ride and promenade
and watch the waves and drink in the fresh
aea air. Tie here whore the two immense
gnns, presented to the Confederate govern
ment by English merchants, ware planted
daring onr lato war. All are familiar with
tbe fats of ono of those gnns, which burst
soon after being mounted. The other was
thrown overboard when thecity was evacuat
ed and has, doubtless, long since disappear
ed in the jieldiDg sends o. the harbor bed.
Horo has rocently been erected a stature of
Jasper ; It stands upon a square pelestal
and is supposed to be a life-like image of
that hero, hiving the historic flag in the left
hand in the act of replanting It after having
regained the walls ot ths fort. Leavicg the
Battery we come to the
custom nocsx,
a hnge pile of marble and iron. Marble
piled on marble, nntil the eye ,s dazzled
with tbe whiteness and the brain confused
with colan.ua and traceries. This building
was began before the war and was intended
tohemnoh more splendid than it really is,
bnt when the Bonth fell, tbe appropriation
was. under the then syatomatto oppression
of the South, reduced and the original plans
modified to .nita cotqaereJ provitce.
TH* llLkSUL court
ia now in session at this place and is settling
tbe enters Railroad interest of Bonth Caro
lina. Every one of the roads of this State
are either ia the bands of receivers or ef
forts are being made to pm them there.
This morning 1 bad the good fortune to
bear the now notorious ex-Uovernor D. H.
Chamberlain and also ex-Qovernor Migrate,
.a speeches on one of the railroad oases
These two ex-aovemors were on opposite
sides and much amnsemen: was created
wbea Migrate oited tee opinion of Cham
berlain, given while Attorney-General, on
his aids Claiming for it the earnest attention
of tbe court.
Tbo Judges preaiding are Chief Juatios
Waite, Judges Bond, or Baltimore, and Bry
an. of Carolina, chief Justice Waite hs»
a not unpleasant {tee, and linghs at eTery-
tbng amusing that occurs. Wnen Migrate
began to eulogise Uhimberlain aa Attorney-
General of Bonth Carolina, he. with tee as
sociate judges, join the auditors in a good
laugh. Waite has thick, protruding lips,
bread flat nose and dull, fish-like eyes,
which make bis face disagreeable at short
range; he appears to be comparatively a
you eg mao, his hair not yet being silvered.
Bond is an aristocratic looking fellow and
has a southern face and figure, Bryan evi
dently apes the appearance of the poet
Bryant, and doubtless dresses by tbe picture
end realty does look ecmethlcg like him,
having and wearing the same kind of white
hair and beard.
