V*, says one of the strangost and most re-
mukablo cures that tho people of Peters
burg has ever witnessed was that which took
place at a colored baptizing in this city on
Sunday afternoon. During the evening fff-
ty four candidate* were immersed, one o f
whom was a deaf and dumb mute named
Burwell Lancaster, about twenty-one years
cf age, who is highly educated, having re
ceived his schooling at the college for tho
leaf and dumb tn Providence, It. I. After
using baptized by the officiating minister,
Bev. Henry WiU.ama, pastor tof the Oilfield
Baptist Cburcli in thie city, the mute return
ed frcmjthe water cured of hla infirmities
and gave vent to his feeling* by alnsty about
of “Thank Ood," when he was again taken
deaf, and dumb. To ray that tbe specta
tors were considerably amazed would bnt
feebly express it, and no little consternation
waa occasioned among the largo crowd at
he miraculous core which waa to last but a
few minutes.
Impatient Politicians.
Wo notice soma of tbe papers are at
ready figuring about the strength of tbe
prospective candidates (or the Presidency
in so-called pivotal Northern and Western
States. Thus the price of liberty is not
only eternal vigilance bnt perpetual fuss
about election! and a perpetual candida
cy. Scarcely one year elapses after a
national, election, before the strings be-,
gin to be arranged for the neif one. In
this case the Bepnblicia candidate for
1880 was actually put In training for tbe
next heat before his executive 'chair had
cooled.
The trip around the world and square
across U—then up one Bide and down the
other, as elaborate, comprehensive and
time consuming be it was, will not
coneume enough of the time allotted to
keep General Grant tut of tight, and in
tho exclasiva range of favorable report,
lie Is coming back, as bis hackers say,
too scon. If be lauds on tbe Pacific
shore In June, as it Is saidjhe will, then
there will be a full year fortthe perfume
and glory of European jand Oriental hom
age to evaporate and Grant to subside
into original proportions.
What, they ask, will be tbe use of that
grand reception at the Golden Gate—
tbe jeweled crown from Philadelphia—
the gorgtooB procoetion across tbe con
tinont and all tho pomp and splendor of
that gorgeous ovation, if a year must ex
pire before tbe excitement can find use-
ful expression at tbe convention and the
billot box t Tbe great whirl of events,
impressions and sensations is so rapid
that ell tbe gunpowder, enthusiasm and
glory will be lost and forgotten.
If Grant must come in June, let us at
least, reservo the trumpets, gunpowder
and shouts. Let us put them off till he
is nominated for the third race. How
awkward all this fnas, crowns and gilded
pageantry are like to be l IIow silly lo be
gin the canvass eighteen months before
election day 1
Under this sober sooond thought tbe
grand procession ia said to bo dropping by
car-loads, and it ia now doubtful whether
more than forty to fifty trains will nltl-
mately be arrayed in the royal pageant,
which was originally intended to go far
beyond all provions conceptions of an
cient or modern oriental magnificence,
Lot us have peace. Let at least a thou
sand of tbe promised elephants and cam
els and lions be withdrawn from the pro-
oession.
A Double .Republican Team.
Ia addition to tbo Okalons ''Southern
States,” run by W. H. Kernan “a oarpet
bagger, who onoe (according to the Phil
adelphia Times) rotated between Ohio and
Indiana,” bnt who now industriously plies
his battery at tbe North In the Interest 8
of seollonal disoord and in the employ
ment of tho stalwatts, .the latter havo
just started a new exponent of hato, by
name “The Solid North,” and printed in
Hartford, Conneotiont.
Between there two magazines of Greek
fire, tho stalwarts intend to beat up tbe
furnaoe seven times hotter than it was
wont to be heated. Both being natural
and original blaokgnards, and both being
nndor tbo indnoement of liberal pay by
the stalwart* to abase the Notth and tbe
Sonth unsparingly,it la not surprising that
their extraordinary fury and malevolence
astonish oommon people and exolte tbe
strongest hopes of tbo stalwart lenders,
somo of whom seam seriously to believe
that If they fail to brood a olvil war, they
will, at least, bring the two sections to
tho point of shaking thoir fists ut caob
other. -
But tbe stalwarts have mado a bad in
vestment In theso two organs, and wo
believe they are making a bad invest'
ment in all their other arrangements to
set tho North and South by tho ears again.
Tho drift is in tho other discretion. Tho
Southern States wo know, were never
more solicitous for pence and good will
The Northern and Western States may
possibly feel less anxious for sectional
concord. Many of thorn are strongly
Republican, and seem to have settled
with thoir leaders into the notion that
sectional ill-will ie the esaential nutriment
of so-called RepuLhcanism.
But herein they must seo that their
supposed party interests war with their
trade and business interests. Tbo whole
country is now rejoicing in the improving
prospects of trade and the promise of
better days; and in tho fees of such
prospects the Uadical politicians will find
it impossible to rekindle a moral war of
sections.
Meanwhile, we might suggest to those
Southern pipers which ars repnblishing
the violont ntteranoes of these organa of
seotional hatred merely to illnatrate how
false, absnrd, violent and batefal they
are, that such repnblioation is giving
them notoriety and undue importance,
and Is, to a oertain extent, playing into
the hands of the stalwarts. Lst these
fellows hiss at each other unuolloed.
Tbe rising generation ought to be protect-
tJ eguuet the stupef'ing ifitlccuos of Opi
um preparations. Wo call the attention of
sll mother* to tbe fset tlist Dr. Bell s Baby
Syrnp is absolutely free from Laodanum or
otfier Opiate*.
Posb Rdthibvobd.—Tho numerous
vetoes of oar fraudulent President have
stripped him of all Democratic sympathy,
while, at tbo earns time, leaving (hat
party five-fold stronger before the people
than ever. He has failed also to secure
any tangible support or reward from tbe
Republicans, for they would sooner norm
inate Fred Douglass for the Presidency
next time than the weak incumbent of
tho White House, who is without a pol
icy or a following.
Tho only thing Iba*. we wot of that
cin bo placed to tbe credit of Mr. Hayes
is the fact that be did not desert the
“pals” whose lies swore him into the
seat he now wrongfully occupies. Tbe
last man of them was duly and
promptly rewarded. Ae for himself, he
can only he compared to a “pelican in
tho wilderness:” a dead corpse among
living men; a party instrument used and
then deserted; a jackass clad in a lion’s
skin.
Having committed the Radicals square
ly to the use of Federal bayonets in the
conduct of State elections, thus showing
the cloven foot of Grant and despotism,
the Democrats can now afford to vote a
hire sufficiency to keep In motion tbe
wheels of government, and then return
home and tell their etory to an ontraged
people. We trust they will pursue that
course.

The annual closing exercises of these
literary establishments, twenty.Eeven in
number, all came eff yesterday. It is
pleasant to record that each year wit
ceases aa increase of interest by all
classes cf the community ,n these fcun
tains of knowledge which are for the heal
ing of the people. Tb^system is no longer
an'experiment, but a grand success; and
the only wonder is thatthe country waa
aUe by ibtso Jong without If. Ere the

to read or write will form tbe exception
to the present rule.
So far . as we were able to observe,, or
could lain*, tke children In all tba schools
acquitted thamaelvee ber.deoniely, end
reflected great credit upon tbo industry
and fidelity of their instructors. The ex
ercises closing at 12 m„ the writer could
of coarse only visit In person a few of
them. p-
For example, hf paid his respects . to
tbe fourth else*, on tbe Folhill lot,
which Is under tbe Excellent tutelage' of
Miss Clara Smith. This young Isdy is
greatly beloved by her pupils, apd they
manifest t their , etUufciuent by implici-
obedieneo to her teachings. With her it
is a labor of love to guide and direct in
tho paths of knowledge those inchoate
minds which are now as plastic and im
pressible as the potters clay. And right
deftly does she do so, as was abundantly
evinced by the clever performances of
her pupil*. We are quite sure it will he
a great struggle for this exemplary lady
to give up her charge at the commence
ment of tbe neitterm,jaBt when the meta^
has become malleable, and she has the
ability to shape and fashion into proper
mould* the minds of the pupils she loves
so well. Hut this istho inevitable result
in all graded schools, which eTperienco
ha* demonstrated to be tbe best and most
efficient.
Tbe next class visited was the
FIFTH,
under tbe skillful instruction of Miss
Sophia Guilin. Here wo were enter.
Uined by reoitatioos and . speeches from
the youth of both soxeB, somo of which
were rendered exoellently well. Miss
Gnatio is another model teaoher, of
whom too mnoh can not be said In praise,
Whether' as an instructress or for. her
sterling worth and lovely trails of oharao-
ter.
Jnat across a narrow area, also, Miss
Riley’s nnmerons charge lifted np their
voices in Bong, and all over the Folhill
lot, from the seven sohools almost jammed
together, there emanated an odd medley
of sounds made np of, reading, speaking,
rooitlng, talking and aiDgtng, which af
forded^ minilnre type of the confusion
of langnegos at the famous tower of
Babel.
Tho truth Is, thebnildlngs on the Pal_
hill lot are wretchedly contrived,(and falj
far short of aooommodstiug properly tbe
largo number of pupils congregated
there. The children are too muob crowd-
ed.for proper instrnotlon, and tho teach
ers have mnoh to, cpalend with on that
aooonnt. Still, the .most creditable pro
gress bos been made, and tbe results ae-,
oompltsbcd famish oonolasive evidence
of tbo power and wonderful eflioacy of
good disoipltne, thorough organization
and patient industry. In this connec
tion however, tho writer would be false
to the true interests of the community if
ho did not press noon ,tho oountry and
oity authorities tho duty at the earliest
moment practicable, of removing tho tem
porary structures on tho Folhill purchase,
and ereotiug If possible a duplicate of the
South Macon Grammar school. Our
people would tben be well provided with
sohool room for their children, and no
further provision would be, necessary for
generations to come.
Lastly, we wended our way to the
Macon High School, which ia presided
over by Mr. J. S. Barfield, assisted by
that very competent and lovely young
lady, Miss Bessie Merrill.
This branch of our public schools has
been animadverted upon and attacked
with virulence from time to time. But
if those who oppose it could only have
been present at the exercises it was our
privilege to witness, they would have
grounded their arms incontinently, and
forever, upheld this crowning benefaction
of popular education.

At this writing the clouds seem to be
massing their battalions for another pin
rial onslaught upon mother earth. For
some tune past the weather has been dry
and snnny with tha .mercury even reach-
ing into the “nineties.” This, so far, hss
proved a reahhlessing to the farmingin
tfrests of the State. Accounts from all
^quarters hsid reached this office com
plaining of the rapid growth of grass,
weeds and “M^ypopa” in the corn and
cotton fields, and tha complete wiping
out of recent plowing by the heavy rains
which had been so general. Had the
latter continued without “let up,” thou,
sands of aerea of planted crops must
necessarily have been abandoned. As it
is, the whole available force of the
country has been diligently employed in
hoeing and “chopping out” the cotton,
and breaking with the plongh tho im*
pacted crust which had formed in the corn
fields.
The work as yet ha3 not been com
pleted, hut is sufficiently advanced to
save from immediate injury the bnlk of
the crop. It may be added, too, that the
stands of cotton were never better,
though the lata cool nights have been
very favorable for the production of lice.
Corn also is reported to be in a green and
healthy condition, though small for its
age.
From this time onwnrd, however, un
til August, frequent rains will he needed
to assure good crops, auJ the corn is al
ready crying aloud for more water. A
wet Juno ensures a big yield of this all
important cereal. /While on the con
trary, drought will ruin the fairest pros
pect. When the plant is about to shoot
the tassel it matters not how much the
soil is worked or fertilized, moisture is
indisponsablo to success. The ear must
come at a given stage, 1 and if held hack
or prevented from doing so at that criti
cal moment so that thu tassel turns
white and tbe pollen Is dissipated, floods
of rain afterwards, though, causing the
stalk to tnrn green again, are yet power
less to inrreose the yield of grain.
We sincerely trust that tho present
promiso of rain may bo fulfilled.

is felt under the shoulder blade, and
it frequently extends to the top of the

are costive, sometimes alternative with

accompanied with a painful sensation
of having left undone something which
ought to have been done. C A slight,

The patient complains of weariness

plagne under treatment. After the death
of Miss Fike, a post mortem showed a
general congestion ot the whole left side;
also, congestion ot the lower loDe of each
lung, and a slight congestion of tbe right
hemisphere of tbe brain. There were
eight ounces of effaaion in the left pleural
cavity. The case of Miss Fonts’ was a
typical one.
Upon tbe strength ot these deaths, the
sensational press, Saturday, took up tbe
ory of the plague, and the timid and su
perstitions were put to a needless aud
painful alarm over the report that the
yellow fever, existing nowhere to-day in
this oountry, had appeared in Jndisnspo-
Us. Some doctors added to the alarm by
sagely shaking their heads, laying their
fiogeta alongside their noses, and going
off into a wordy analysis of hypothetical
insinuations that mean nothing, because
ware not present. Dr. Davie, Superinten

treatment all these cues were brought,
was emphatic in remarking: "I can simp y
