Several of tba Northern papers, with
anti-Grant sympathies, are exalting over
tbe defeat of Taft for the gubernatorial
Domination of Ohio,as a strong indication
of tbe defeat of Grant for tb* Presiden
tial nomination noxt year. Taft, it will
be remembered, waa one among the many
Cabinet officers daring the Grant admin
istrations, and was understood to be in
favor of Grant as against Sherman for tbe
nomination next year.
When tbe vote was taken, Foster led
Taft by only runs out of 650 voice—a
email and unreliable majority at best.
As an indication of any settled capos:
tion In Ohio to Grant’s proposed third
term, it amounts to nothing. Stats pride,
Sherman’s personal strength in his own
borders—hie aotivlty and that of bis
Yriendt who are the leading Republicans
of Ohio, and hta address as a political
tactician, should have shown a better re
salt than nine majority 1
Certainly sack a conclusion as this waa
little batter than defeat. Where was
Shermsn to show strength as a candidate
bat ia his own State and among bis per
sonal friends—but evsn here Grant comes
withio less than a dozen of beating him.
It seems to ns that all reasoning predi
cated on snch« result as this would go to
show that against Grant Sherman is an
impossible nominer; and this we believe
to be the case.
It is said that tbe "Grant Boom’’ is dy
ing cat; bat we do not so read the signs
of the times. The attitude of the Hayes
administration and the BidicaU in Con
gress unmistakably means {Grant. The
haughty vetoes and tbe bold defiance of
popnlar opinion and tbe constitntion all
mean Grant. They lay tbe track for btm |
carefully aligned with his old career as
President—the conqueror of the Southern
States, with whip in hand to lash the
rebels into onconditionil subjection. The
min on horseback slashing, dashing and
careering over prostrate States and peo'
plrs entitled to nothing bnt inch grace
and mercy as may be extended with profit
to the party whiah saved and now owns

This is the programme of the nomina.
tion and the oanvaas, as clearly as any
thing can ba foreshadowed, and it It not
worth while for anybody to delude him
self with tbe idea that thoae who will con
trol tho Republican nomination mean
anything else, or will fall to carry oqt
their plans, notes* something wholly un
expeoted happens to change the direc
tion.
It is true there 19 a strong opposition
to Grant in the Eidioal party; bnt it is
not an effeotire opposition, nor is it an
inexorable opposition. Nearly every
State will go for him in Convention, and
the mass of bis Republican opponents
will fall into lino afterward; -Grant and

Tho city authorities in conjunction
with an able oommitteo of private gen
tlemen, to wit: Hon. L. N. Whittle, A.
O. Bacon, Asher Ayres, J. E. Jones and
R. F. Lawton, have given notioe, as has
been seen in cur advertising columns, of
a bill to be presented to the adjourned
session of the General Assembly in Jnly,
whioh, if duly enacted, wo trnat will bring
daylight to the night of Macon’s financial
darkness.
The objeot of tho movqmont is to au»
tboriza tho i*ane of bonds bearing a low
rato of interest to bo naed for the purpose
of re-fonding tho present bonded debt,
and landing also tho outstanding floating
debt which hangs so drearily over us.
This to be accomplished through the
agency of a special commission empow
ered to sell the new bonds and with the
proceeds take up the old, beside* issuing
as stated, bonds to cover the floating
debt.
The bill provides also for the levy and
collecting of a tax for the payment of
tbe Interest and prineipal of eaid bonds,
and to prescribe the manner in which
they shall be issued and paid off.
We have no doubt that this most im
pertant and salutary measure will be
piaecd with bnt little if any opposition,
and that ere long Maoon, whioh ia so
rapidly increasing in population and sub
stantial taxabls improvements, will, like
Aagnsta and Savannah, emerge from all
of her pecuniary troubles, and stand
forth redeemed, disenthralled and finan
cially stronger than ever.
This modifioation of the city charter
wilt enable the Mayor and Council, (as
they most assuredly should do at tbe
earliest hour,) to redace the present
onerous, aneqaal and almost ruinous
lioense tax. At presant they bare so
other resort by which the xerenne necea
eary to run the city can he raised, and
the condition of the streets, with barely
light enough to reveal the gullies and
pitfalis on every side, show that even the
sum thus provided, in view of maturing
obligations, is utterly Inadequate for the
purpose* sought to be accomplished.
We hops therefore, that n fair trial
will bo given to the proposed financial
remedy wbioh bts the merit of being the
p it scheme of no oliqne or fsoiion, bnt is
the j lint prodaot of tbs wisdom of a
representative body of onr oitizen?.

In mechanical execution it Is unsurpass

Aad Sgait: We read of banditti in
Italy, who make ’it uhtafe for a traveler
whe ha* any money to get outside the
lines of ordinary travel, and wo wonder
at the imbecility of a government that
can give hiur^ no protection, and at the
low civilization that renders such abases
uud oulrage* possible. We have no
longer 1107 reason to look abroad for
anomalies of this sort. Tiffs* Southern
mnidera give evidence of a lawlessness
and a degraded civilization much more
notable than anything that can be found
among the Italian wilds and mountains.
They are abominable—beyond the power
of su erdinary pen to character.'z \ There
i* nothing whatever to be said in apology
for them. The American, when he reads
of them, can only hang his bead in hor
ror and shame, and groan over the fact
that auch fiendish deeds can ba perpe
trated under the national flag without
punishment, and without even tbe notice
of those who pretend to administer the
law.
Now,tho only question to be considered
after reading the above is, will the peo
ple of the South consent to admit any
longer to their homes and firesides the
Scribner publications? In other wordi*
do they intend to feed and foster any
enterprise which thns shows itself to be
them , deadliest foe and most malignant
traducers. Wo trnat not.
Iiocal Legislation.
The General Assembly will meet again
four weeks from to-day, and the impres
sion ia genera), that after thia data no
more local bills can be introduced into
that body because not advertised for
thirty days.
This ie a mistake. The law eajoins
thirty days previous advertisement, it is
(me, before any bill can be introduced
and acted npon, and limits tbe
introduction of local matter to tbe first
fifteen days of the session. Bat any bill
which has been advertised say for fifteen
days prior to the assembling of tbe Leg
islature, can be received and acted on by
that body. There yet remain therefore
twelve or thirteen days, dariog whioh any
looal bill if advertised oan be aoted npon
by the General As3omb!y.
We trust onr friends all over the State
will note this fact and govern themselves
accordingly. So far as we can perceive,
there will be comparatively little local
legislation in the next session of the Gen
eral Assembly- Not a moiety of what
occurred under tho old constitntion.
Now any measure of the kind involves
eomo care and expense, and is not
entered into hastily. Formerly, nearly
every member bad s batch of insignificant
looal bills which onmbered the dooket,
consumed the time ot legislators, and
were a grievous burden to tho State.
In this respeot the new Oonatitntion
will prove a great saving to the com
monwealth.

A 8TSAKOE HAND 01 CBIXINALS.
There oame down to us whisperings of a
strange band of criminals up in Folk county
of this State. There u said to be a clan of
men engaged in forging and selling land
grants. They operate Hear tba State line
and oscillate back and forth from Alabama.
A man living near the Alabama liae is arid ts

printed at tbe printing office at Oedartown,
It is said that in the last month appboations
have been made to the proprietor of the
printing offioe to print eome of the blanks
with the offer of targe pay, which was de-
din ed.
The clan is believed to be extensive, cov
ering the whole country np there. They
take advantage of the poor and ignorant.
Their dealings are widespread, there being
members of the clan in a number of conn-
