They were ae solid as a brick and
would weigh at least thirty poonda each.
Then the ground waaoracked wido open
with tho wealth of Irish potatoes which
literally cropped ont to tho surface and
would have made an Irishman's mouth
ran water.
Of snap beans, e quashes, beets, onions,
etc., also, there waa no end, while four
of tho most approved varieties of toma
toes were laden with frnit which hnng
pendant from the frames that supported
them
And yet a few years eince this was an
abandoned, exhaueed, sterile hill side,
hardly capable of Bprouting cow peas.
Mr. Harman, however, haa turned
tops? turvy tho stiff olay soil to a great
depth, pouring in at the same time a lib
eral supply of domestic and commercial
fertilizers, and keeping the wboio in the
best poesiblo tilth.
Where tho ground was rolling, terra-
cos and hillside ditches were constructed
to prevent washing, and' thus steadily
from year to year tho land has improved
until now its fertility ie almost unex
ampled.
A. small area of steep hillside last year
piodacod 500 bushels of sweet potatoes,
and we saw a halt aero or more of oats
which would rival in luxuriance the rich
prairies of the West. So much for the
fruits of patient industry,
TH« HOSPITAL WARDS.
Next, we entered the kitoben, where
huge boilers on the atove were filled with
champion potatoes, squaahes, beans ami
other vegetables, and the aavory viands
filled the air with their pungent aroma.
Here was a feast fit, not only for poor
oaret of the United States forces, led by
their General—he was always in front—
tbo Mexicans, taken entirely by
surprise, were swept from the field,
scattered and utterly broken. A bat
tery of aix pieces of artillery was carried
at the point of tbo bayonet. It was in
this charge that dashing commander re
ceived a wound which he and everybody
else tbcngbt mortal. A grape shot
passed completely - through his body,
penetrating-one lung and coming out
near the spine. A Mexican surgeon per'
formed the remarkable operation—now
historic tn tho annals of snrgery—of
drawing a silk handkerchief thrangh his
patient's body, thus removing the dot
ted blood and saving Gen. Shields' life.
In ten weeks the General was in the sad'
die again and participated in the battles
of Contreras and Cherubneco. The latter
waa one of the bloodieet battles of the
war, for the American troops bad to fight
ten times their number of the enemy
until reinforcements could come up. Gen.
Shields again had to meet, in tbo part
assigned to him, bis old enemy, Santa
Anna, and again defeated him as before;
but in doing it he led the charge of the
“Palmetto'' Brigade, of South Carolina,
and the New York Volunteers, in which
half the number was lost. After this
came the storming of Cnapultapec,
whioh Gen. Shields waa badly shot in the
arm, but he refused to leave the field
while the fighting was going on. Peace
soon after put an end to tho war.
With the subsequent history of Gen,
Shields daring the late civil war, and his
career as a Democratic statesman in the
Senate of the United States, onr readers
are doubtless acquainted.
He was a brave and honorable soldier
and citizen, and died almost in abject
poverty.

The writer was impressed also with the

From the kitoben we passed through
the eating apartments with their snowy
table oloths and spotless floors, and conld
readily sea that the poor “miserablea 1
lacked nothing in tbs shape of oreatnre
ootuforU. 'Jit same was equally tree
the dining room of the oolored ward, and
the beds of tbo negro patients were as
olean as soap and water could make
them. Tt may truly be said that cleanli
ness is the pervading feature of the boa
pitalla its every department.
Tho patients number tbirty-tbree in all
at this time, eighteen of whom are whilos
and fifteen colored. Among the fornjcr
must bo Incladed three little ohildren, all
boja, born in the wards, and tho off
spring of thamo. But they are bright
cheery little fellows, and it is to be hoped
wilt illustrate in their faturo career the
apothegm that
"Honor and shame from no condition rise;
Act wsll you part, there the honor lies.”
Tho other white patients comprise
three male adults, and twelve women.
The negroes are divided into seven
males and eight females. The olqept

Moderate work only is required of
those inmates who are able to get about,

Hut $1,000 are set apart to cover the
entire support of the hospital, including
salaries of Superintendent and physician,
tho wages of a day laborer for tho gar

dental expenses. Yet bo admirably does
Mr. Harmon manage tho concern that
even the whole of this appropriation has
never been consumed. Tho salary of the

Dr. BUckshear, who spares no pains or

$50 per month. Bath stipends aro ridiou-
Iously low and utterly inadequat for the

In conclusion, we can only say that the

or the condition of its inmates. The inatl'

Major General James Shields, wbo died
suddenly In Ottumwa, Iowa, recently,
was an Irishman by l.irlh, and a lawyer
Liy profession.
He was born in the county, of Tyrone,
Ireland, in 1810, and came to this coun
try when be waa only sixteen years of
age. At the time of his decease he waa
sixty-nine years old, and had devoted
forty years to the public service. He
participated ln the Florida Seminole war,
and was promoted from the ranks for
gallantry. Afterwards he embarked in
political life, waa elected to the Illinois
Legislature, made Associate Juatioe of
the Supreme Conrt, succeeding Stephen
A. Douglass on the bench, and waa a
special friend of that great statesman.
Ho waa also Intimate with Presidents
Polk and Lincoln, and always waa re
garded as a man of honor who could be
trusted fully.
We have room, however for no pro
tracted sketch of the old hero’s life and
career, and simply append a brief account
of his Mexican campaigns, taken from
the New York Timet:
War broke out with Mexico. It was
in the spring of 1S4L that the State of
Illinois, having raised and equipped a
regiment of infantry. General Shields
wss appointed to its command with the
rank of Brigadier General. He was now
in that work which was nearest his
heart—he was fighting. He served un
der General Taylor, (afterward Presi
dent,) under General Wool and nnder
General Scott. At the srige of Vera

courage, zeal and activity- At Cerro

a marriage away from home is the result.
To illustrate the sneoess of snch controt-
ing parties it Is said, “love laughs at
bolts ami bars," and snoh is the oase.
Yesterday we had a very romantic wed
ding in our oily. The young lady was on
employe of the Eagle and L’benix Fac
tory, and yesterday morning left herbnsi-
ness for the purpose of meeting her in
tended husband. They met, wont to the
residence of a minister and were married.
They then called on friends in the lower
portion of the city, and wonld have
doubtless spent the day happily, bnt for
the enaatmeut of something Dot in the
-programme. In explanation it is neocssary
to etato the mother of the bride waa not
like Barkis, willing; and, when told of the
manner in whioh she had been outwitted,
started in aearoh of the pair. A harried
step up the front steps, and loud knock
ing at thedoor announced tho arrival of
the irate mother ,n-law. Not a moment
stopped nor atayed they, bnt wiibont ro
gard for praoefnlness, jumped from a
window and beat a basty retreat. The
aggrieved parent rapidly pursued them,
and a lively race was witnessed by the
neighbors. The young people were flset
of loot, and soon plaoeil several blooka
between themselves and the old lady.
Some of the lioye Bay they went os far as
the hospital, and remained in their hid-
iog-plaoo in the river bink until dusk,
when they wended their way homeward.
A happy reconciliation will be the result,
as thousands of similar affaire have ter
minated.

Lo appropriate oertain bonds held by it on
deposit, fo tbe completion of tbe railroad of
another company according to a prior con
tract and specifications made by a certain
firm, “ and all other work under said con
tract not by them folly performed,” L not
an undertaking to oomplnte the railroad fur

for, or supply Uis means of payment. Nor
is said stipulation an undertaking to Veep
down interest on outstanding bonds whilst
tbe work of- completion was in progress,
tbongb tbe firm bad agreed to do so in tbs
prior oontract to which tbe stipulation makes
reference.
9. For any breach of the foregoing stipu
lation, compensation may be bad in dama

less It appeared that such damages, togeth
er with tbe remnant of tbe bonds on deposit,
would probably oancit tba default for whioh
the sale of the railroad undortbe mortgigo
is impending, tbe sale should not be ODjoin-
ed. More especially is thu true, as the
morgagor company, though bound to keep
down the interest on its outstanding bonds,
did not do so, but suffered tbe same to fall
on the other company aa guarantor, and
bonoo is not in a favorable position to com-
pLin of any delay by tbo latter in prosecut
ing tbe unfinished work of construction.
10. As it is now certain that the mortgagor
has had full notice of the intention to sell,
aiulas the non-expiratton of the term of

which ground has disappeared by lapso of
