Charleston. Jnno 17.—A special dis
patch to tbe .Veto* ami Counisr from Spar-
tanburg to-day says at 12 o’clock last
night a body of a hundred and fifty armed
men entered that town on horseback and
proceeded to tho Jail whore they deman
ds! John Moore, a prisoner committed for
the outrage and mntder of Miss Wood ward
op the 5th instant. Sheriff Thompson,
having been warned that an attempt
would bo made to lynch the prisoner,
hid removed him to the Air-Lino railroad
about a mile from town, intending to
board the Northern bound train and
reseh Columbia; but he bad been watolied,
and before tho train arrived tho lynebera
secured Moore and took him to the
tesnsof murder, near Wolford, 12 miles
distant, where they said they would
hang him at ten o’clock this morning.
Moore and his viotlm were both white.

Acousta, Ga., June 1<.—J. J. Moore,
who has been confined in tbe Spartan
burg, South Caroline, jail for supposed
rap* and murder of Mrs. Frauds Heaton
of Pickens county, was forcibly taken
possession of by a party of infuriated
oitisens last night, and hanged at eight
o’clock this morning in the woods near
the place where the remains of the mur
dered Isdy were found. Moore asserted
his innocence to the very last.

from Brest says the steamer Faraday
will leave Charleston on Wednesday for

Messina, June 17.—Continued shocks
of earthquake, attributed to the action of
Mt. Etna, havo occurred near Santa Vsr-
rene and Gnardia, with destruction of

which left Bolna, in the province of Con
stantino yesterday, encountered six hun
dred inaurgente occupying a defile in the
Onelonba hills. They were dislodged by
artillery end the troops occupied their po

ening documents against the Saltan were
circulated on Monday. The guards of

Washinoton, Jane 17—The Demo
cratic caucus met this morning to receive
the repott of tbe rub-committee appoint
ed to confer with Bayard npen the’War-
ner silver billjand bis proffered resignaton.
Tbe committee reported both B&j&rd and
Ksrnan aro inflexibly oppose! to action
on the bill dnting tbe present cession.
Speeches were made by Tonrman anl
McDonald in favor of dropping the whole
subject, and by Garland and Coke argu
ing the acceptance of Bayard’s rerigta-
ticn, ro-organiistion of the Finance Com
mittee, and immediate action on the bill.
Gen. Gordon replied to Coke, in a
speech which is described by all as one of
great fervor and eioqnenof. He said the
qaestion had both a personal and politi
cal aspect. Ihe acceptance of Bayard’s
resignation, or the adoption ot Coke’s
resointion, would be conatrned ss a cen
sure lo that gentleman, and he was op
posed to both propositions. He was as
loyal to the silver cause aa any man liv
ing, bnt wouldn't consent to strike down
a m.n like Biyard. He knew he oould
speak for every man in Georgia, and be
lieved he could for every Southerner,
when he aaid that “A blow to Bayard
weald give a pang to every Southern
heart," for daring all their troubles and
trials sinoe tne war Bayard had bsen the
"truest of the true.”
Gen. Gordon also opposed tho course
recommended by Coke, on political
grounds, since it might cause dissension
in tbe party, and effect other more im
portant questions. Remark* were also
made by Sxulabnry ard Yoorhees, and
tbe caucus adjourned until to-morrow
without action.
