The Naval Academy Appointments.
For tbe information of onr young
friends who desire to know the action of
tbe recent Hoard of Visitors to the Na
val Academy, wo subjoin tho following
from the New York Herald, of the 19ib
lost., wbich is considered a strong en
dorsement of the method of a competi
tive examination, already referrod to in
our columns:
BtrOBT or TDK B3ABD OF VISIT0B3.
The report of tho Board of Visitors to
ths Naval Academy hai been received
by Secretary Thompson. The Board
compliment* tho management of tbe in
stltution and makes a number of recom
mendations, among them that a higher
r-tauJanl for admission to the Academy
bs established and that tbe same system
of competitive examination that exists in
the admission of cadet engineers to the
Academy be made to apply to oadet mid 1
shipmen. They suggest that the regula
tion against the use of tobacco by cadets
be rigidly enforced. In conclusion they
pay u high tribute to Commodore Far
ter, who died on the day that the Board
held its last sitting.

SUPERIOR COURT.
Verdict in the Kitchen Case—Tbe
■ornnlutr Butt.
The verdict of tbe jury in the case of
Mitchell vs. the Central road, wbich was
fonnd and sealed the night previous at
half past nine o'clock, was read ia court
at its opening yesterday morning. It
war, aa foreshadowed, against tbe road
for the sum of $6,000 dollars.
The amount sued for was twenty thou
sand dollars. Tbe oase will be taken to
tbe Sapreme Court and a reversal of judg
ment sought. The principal groond of .the
prosecution was that the construction of
the out at the point where the aocident
occurred was not on the approved meth
ods, and in this way the road
failed to exercise that oare
and circumspection that it should
hare done for the safety of its passen
gers and employes. The main ground
of defense wae that tbe accident was the
result of ths ''act of God,” which ceuld
not have been avoided by the road and
for whioh the corporation was not lUble.
Of coarse other and important points
came cp on both sides and each and
every step was contested with great per
tinacity, oonnsal on each side excelling
themselves in the ardency and ability
of their advocacy.
Yesterday a'case bearing some points
of similarity to tbe Mitchell case was
Uken up. This was the suit of Mrs. Su
san Horning vs. the Macon and Brunt-
wick road. She is suing for tho death
of her husband, who was killed while in
the service of tho road some yoara since.
The amount of damages are as ia tho
other case, placed at twenty thousand
dollars.
The case is briefly as follows: Thd
ongine of tbe do.n passenger train on
December lu.h, 1876, exploded about a
mile and a half below Bazzard Boost.
Mr. George Horning, tbe engineer, was
instantly killed and Mr. Ei. Richards,
tho fireman, bruised but not disabled,
Tbe tender telesoopad the baggage car
and other damage was done.
Tbe engine was considered one of tho
beat on tbe road, and Mr. Horning was
an engineer of large experience. He
was previously employed on tbe South
western road, and was a quiet industrious
man.
Yesterday tbe evidence for tbe plaintiff
was all in except that of a witness who
could not bo reached yesterday ^after
noon.
Tho conrt adjourned until eight o’clock
this morning, when tho caae will bo re-
earned.
An incident in tbo trial ooourred yes
terdsy afternoon. One of the witnesses
stated that he bail boon told by another
wiinosa that Colonel Adams, tbo Super
intendent of tbe road, bad warned bim
against appearing again as a witness
against tho railroad.
Golonel Adams, who was present’
denonnoed tbo statement as not so.
Efforts wero made to obtain tbe witness
who first made tbe remark, bat in vain.
Ho will be examined first this morning.
Tbo caso does not want in interest.
Tho jury bearing tho caso ia a very
fino one. It was strioken from tbo Grand
Jury.

that Mr. J. married aa actress named

and later in the season started on a
Southern tour with a oompany of his own.
Of his oareer Mr. Davie says:
‘•For the first time in his life he be

At Macon, Georgia, Cbatles, his first

We regret to annonnoa that Professor

His resignation was handed in daring tbe

entirely volnnUrlly by the Professor, and
iB leaving tbe inilitntion he takes with
bim the very best wishes of tbe Faculty
of tbs institution and trustees, and highly
complimentary testimonials at to his mer
its as a teacher and worth as a mao.
He bts filled tha chair of ancient and
modern langnages for the past six or sev

fifteen years experience in leaching.
Professor Bisien is a gentleman of cul.

Mr. O., while a model farmer, is not far
ahead of many others whose farms I have
had the pleasure of seeing. Exoept in small

abundant Binoe the oo min gin of June, which,

where there are a great man; of them, bnt
the forms aro very abundant and are not
falling off any at alL I find tbe fruit crep
more promising here than in Southwestern
Georgia, thongb by no means flattering even
here, and ripe watermelons are becoming
quite common.
Ths people of Florida are much elated at
the success of the Hou. Noble A. Hull in his
trial.
A casual observer can bnt note the favor*
able change in the general aspect of affairs
in this Btate since lbs end of Badical
misrule. Ta lahassee does not seem itself,
so much has her business prospects and
even social condition improved. There is
improvement of a permanent character
progressing all the while, and the citizens of
ths capital of Florida appear to feel onco
more that they have encouragement to go
onward and upward. Your correspondent
predicts that Tallahassee will more than re*
ga.n ber former pride an! that too within a
few more years.
The Middle Florida Fair bids fair lo be
come a grand suocois at its next annual ses

health of this section, generally considered
a veiy unhealthy country, is very good in
deed ; in fact I have beard of no aorere caso
of siclDoes in the conutry. The weather is
nteneely hot.
I shall leave here for home to-morrow,
going back altogether a different ronte from
tho one I came and will write you from Ca
milla soon.
On Friday and Friday night next, the 30th,
there will bo an examination and exhibition
of Prof O. Bussell Twitty’a school, in Ca

time. Can't yonr ”B. H. J.,” or some of

pecially those or the Georgia press, and
nothing would afford os all more pleasure
than to have many representative! of the
press of our State in attendance upon the
above exercises. Although our people will
