Kilpatrick Spring Pie NIC.
Fiv* miles from this oity, yesterday, at
Eilpitriok's Spring, a picnic was held
which was prononneed by all who attend
ed to be the picnic of tbe season. Tbe
place is located in a delightful little glen,
embowered with thickly set tall forest
trees, now of oonrse in fall leaf and
shading tbe spot into pleasant coolness.
Ia tbe ravine ore are two bell springs,
tbo temperature of whose water is very
low. Yesterday tho weather was de
lightful beneath these trees throughout
tbo day, a gentlo breeze finding its way
under tbe shadaws of tbe trees and
keeping everything cool.
Early in tbe morniog the people com
menced gathering until several hundred
bad bad reached the spot from tbo ad
joining conntry, and thirty or forty Ma«
conites joined in with those from Jonea
county. The picnic was gotten up by
Mr. William Kilpatrick, the owner of
tno grounds. He takes pride and pleas
uro in making these occasions enjoyable
to all and did all in bis power yesterday
to make tbe time pass pleasantly.
A dsnoing platform, wbiob bad been
constructed, was oalled iuto requisition
early in tbe day, and not abandoned nn
til tbe bonr for breaking up. For onoe
in Jane dancing was very pleasant. A
adored band from tbo oity famished mu.
sic, and old familiar tnnes, whose time
was perfeot and notos energetic and clear
enough to suit all purposes, wearied not
in well doing. Dinner was on tbo basket
order, no general lablo boing spread ;
bat foronoo tbe oity and county mingled
togithoria tbo utmost fraternity.
So mnch was tho picnio enjoyed tbat
another was determined upon, and next
Thursday, four weeks, was sit apirt as
the day when another would be held at
tho same place. As soon as tho repetition
of the festivities was determined upon,
several carcasses were promptly contri
buted and all the generous people of
Jones seemed anxious to contribute
something toward the general object.
Tho Maconites present wore cordially in
vited to return.
At tbe ond of tho last dance, tbe com
mittee annonneed that they bad money
enongh left to treat tbo crowd, and all
were Invited up to partake of refresh
ments.
The crowd was tbe moat orderly tbat
has ever assembled at the springs, wbicb
is saying a great deal. Tbo only accident
reported happened to ayonng lady whose
ankle was bruised, but not aerionsly, by
a rolling log on which a number bad
been sitting.
We are indebted to Mr. J. A. Pugh for
a delightful drive to and from the festive
scene.

Water Works-liur Slater City
Angnsta,
Maoozt, June 19,1ST9.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger. I am
glad to see our people wakiDg up on the
subject of water works. It bss been a
subject of astonishment to many that
they have so long been indifferent to this
great interest.
Augusta has taken a proper view of
this subject. In a reoent visit to that
oity I was surprised to find such a beau
tiful stale of things existing. A oity of
manufactories and machine shops, all by
the result of a canal, with a water power,
without limit as far es we eonld see.
The city owes its present prosperity to
this canal. In conversation with a prom
inent eitix’n cf Augusta he remarked :
"The c'.r.tl cost Augusts a large amount
of money, bnt without thia canal Augusta
would be nothing. That is to say, all bal-
anoe of what we bad woa!d hive been lost
bat for the expenditure made in tbe
osnal.”
Having the osnal with all its advanta
ges, the oily water works are easily man-
aged.
Let Macon capital and enterprise get
the canal, then we will havo an improved
state of things tbat will bring not only
extensive water works, but a larger pop
ulation and increased industries, tbat will
pay for tbe water and pat Maacn among
tbo first cities at tbe Sontb as a great
maunfaotnring, as well as educational
centre.
Let ns have the osnal, and then tbe wa
ter works will follow.

Kentucky whiskey surpass those of any other
state or conntry ore. first, tbe superiority of
the grain ; second the purity and qua itv of
the hmo-stone water and last, bnt not least,
tho mode of distillation, which latter is so
appropriate to tbe state. In this state every
thing is so slow bnt sure. Bourbon whisky
generally contain 70 per cent corn, 1C of
rye, 15 per cent malt, while rye whisky con
tains 85 per oent of rye and 15 per cent of
barley malt. After the ingrediente aro made
into “m-sli, ” which is produced ia a large tub
with a revolver rake to stir them, it is the a
run off into a fermenting apartment, near
which is a yeast room, so arranged that it is
easily transported to the fermenting tnb.-j,
each of wk'cb has a capacity for holding
thousands of gallons of mash, which, when
fnby fermented, is so oalled beer. For aonr-
maah whiskey the fermentation ia productd
without the use of yeast. When ths fermen
tation is affected the beer is rnn into what .*
called a beer-well, and from there pumped

ice cold) is supplied constantly from the well,
which is rnn by pipes to the bottom of the

and producing tbe first low wines and the
first distillation. Tho next proezza develops
the genuine article. Tbe low wines are pump

coub'odby direct firs under tbe still, by
wbicbmsans pure whisky is obtained and tbe

Grand Jury Presentments
We, the Grand Jurors, chosen and sworn lor
the adjourned term of the Superior Court ol
Bibb County, make the following Presentments ■
We have passed upon all matter, claiming
our attention, as given us by tho Solicitor.
We have examined the County Jail and prem
ises, and found them in good condition as to
clean! ineta and order, and tbe duties 11 the Jailer
systematically and faithlully performed. Up
on interrogating the prisoners (ten in number)
we ascertained that they receive wholesome
food properly prepared and in sufficient quan
tities. Treatment unobjectionable.
We dosire to call the attention of the County
Commissioner, to tile bml condition of tho step*
leading to the main building; also those to the
upper story.
Proper repairs could be made at a trifling cost
if not delayed too long, and we recommend tbat
the matter receive early attention.
Other improvements of a sanitary nature
might be maae. which we decline to suggest
trusting that ere long the county may be in a
financial condition to erect anew Jail.
All county affairs were so thoroughly investi
gated by onr intelligent predecessors that we
find but very little requiring our attention.
We have, by committee, visited the committee
r Dinted by the last Grand Jury to examine
books and financial account, of the county
offioers, end find that they are coing their work
very thoroughly, and wo believe tost thia ex
amination will be of great advantage to our
people, and we do not think tbe compensation is
excessive.
We heartily endorse the efforts made by his
Honor. Judge Simmons, to expedite the bush
ness of the Court, and to nia Honor and the So
Heitor we return thanks for courtesies eitended
to this body.
