The defendant wa* guilty of stealing

tally left on the desk of Ur. Henry’s
shop, and in hia absence appropriated.
Suspicion rested on several other oolored
men in the shop at the time. A clue
was obtained, however, through a con
versation of a brother-in-law of Rise
He waa accordingly arretted, and while
in jail, awaiting bis trial, made aeveral
confessions to Mr. Henry in regard to
the theft of the money.
At the oondoslon of the Roie case the
trial of the State ve. Henry Shields,
colored, was taken np.
It will be remembered that on the
evening of the 1st of Msy a difficulty oc
curred on Mulberry street In which Mr.
John Benner and the oolored man Shield*,
were .bet- The last Grand Jury found
two true bills against Shields—one for an
asaault with intent to murder, and the
other for an affray. The oase of the as

The evidence developed the facts that
the oolored man. Shields, who w*s en
gaged as a cook for Mr. Benner, was un
der the influence of liquor, and had been
endeavoring to havs a difficulty with an
other colored man on the premises. He
came from the restaurant department lo
the fruit store bslow. Mr. Thomas Ben
ner ordered him out on acoount of his
boisterous behavior. This bad no ei-
fict. Mr. John Benner, who wae
above, bearing the noise, came b.low.
At this tima Mr. Thomas Benner threw
a large oonob tlr-.-Il at the negro, Mr.
John Banner a glass, and at the- same
instant the colored man with a katfe
endeavored to earve Mr. John Benner,
catting hi* ebirt sleeve. So quickly did
the whole affair oocnr, that it waa almost
impossible to see in what order the
throwing of the missiles and the cutting
occurred. Mr. Benner then wont up
stairs for his pistol.
Toe evidence ended here. The case
was elaborately argued and went to the
jury at 7 o’clock. At a late hour a ver
dict hail not been reached.
This morning the case of the State vs.
Monroe Sannddrs, colored, charged wit h
the mnrder of 8 vamp Molly, will Us

At (his term of Ihe court there are five
murder oases which will be sounded fur

Various sources of supply for tho water
have been suggested. The river, the
consolidated streams tributary to the
river above the city for some miles, and
the lateat suggestion is bringing to
the city the water of McCall’* pond.
This latter would be an unfailing source
of pure, clear water. The pond is
nearly on a level with the old
court honse square. Piping would de
liver a sufficient; stream to a point in
that portion of the city, and from thence
it could be forced by a small engine to a
aland pipe, or sent throbbing through
the city by the Holly system, which
would dispense with the stand pipe. The
discharge for the pond now is estimated,
even at this dry Beeson of the year at
6.C00.000 gallons. Two millions gallon*
per day is the estimated amount for the
use of Macon for years to come. Wo
do not commit ourselves toMoCsll’a pond,
but simply present the latest views and
suggestions on the subject.
The Academy for the Blind.
Arrangements are being made by the
Superintendent ot the Academy for the

lanta during the session of the Legisla
ture, a portion of the pupils of the Acad
emy, and give an exhibition in the Op
era House in Atlanta, for the benefit of
the members of tb* General Assembly.
The evening of the 3rd of July baa been
selected a* the time. Tne invitation
was extended laat winter, but the visit
was unavoidably postponed. The exhi
bition which will be given will be illus
trative. of the methods of instruction,
the literary and musical departments.
A small sum will be chargod for admis
sion, which will be given to the pupils
taking part iu Ihe exhibition. Soch an
entertainment wonid prove highly inter
esting and instructive to the members
ot thw Legislature and to the people of
Atlanta, and will serve to show what can
