In bia address to the College last year,
be atated that $1,200,000 bad been ex
pended by Georgians for tip education
of their ohildren in the Northern schools,
and at that time near 200 pupila were
enroll >d in Not thorn catalogues.
Last night the Commencement was well
attended. Thu programme was as fol
low*:
Overture—“William Tell,” Prof. Anton
Huber.
Oration—Iofluenee of Beligion upon
Civilization (original), Bedford Mack-y.
Music—Selections from •■Faust,” Prof.
Antcn Huber.
Latin Oration—Do Cioeronia Orationi-
bna (original), Michael J. Egan.
Music—‘-Zita Phi Mareb," Edward M.
Patterson.
Scientific Oration—“The Air" (origi
nal), Victor J. Dorr.
Music—"Rigolstto,” Prof. Anton Hu
ber.
Oration—Medieval History and its
Commentators (original), Christopher J.
Rooney.
Music—March from “Matsauiello,”
Prof. A. llubt-r’.
Distribution of Medals and Prizes.
Address—Kt. Rev. Bishop Gross.
Finale—The College Band.
The mnsio rendered was very credita
ble. The oration upon tne “Iofluenee of
Religion upon Civilization," was a review
of the great events and governments in
onoiont history, and eleaily showed where
thero was a decline in religion and mo
rality, governments and empires fell, and
are now almost ix'.inct. The speaker
eloquently referred to the sentiments
of Washington, In his farewell address
npon this subject, and showed the effects
of the iema at the North, which brought
on tne late war, to be similar to the teach
ings of Garibaldi, of Italy, and at the
present day, of Ingersoll, ia Amelias.
Too latiu oration was well articulated
and we presume appreciated by those
who were sufficiently familiar with tho
dead language to take it in.
The Soientifio Oration on “The Air,”
was tinly soicntifioally handled, bat in

In the Superior Court yesterday the
proceedings were cf a more than mnUly
.interesting nature. The jury, which had
been out all night struggling with the
ease of the Slate vs. Henry Shields, cam
into Court with a verdict of guilty of an
assault and battery, with a recommenda
tion to the mercy cf the Court. The
next case was that of Monroe Sanders,
charged with the erime cf mnrder.
The accused la this cate is cm who was
supposed to have been Implicated in (he
mnrder of Swamp Mollf and tba man
Davia aome years sinoe. The almost
skill and laborious, faithful labor bee'owed
apon tho case by the bast detect in talent
in the eity hava failed to reveal tho mur
derer, and tbe whole matter to this day
remains a “dark and bloody mystery
Several times the officers who have been
working tbe affair up have thought them
selves in sight of it ho true solution bet
have t e in disappointed in t.e r b< p s.
The whole affair since the news of
the doable murder came to the city on *
calm Sunday morning in Sspteuber, ’74,
has excited great iit-irest among all
•lasses, and its passage through the
courts bos been closely watched.
Yesterday the last man scouted of tho
murder was arraigned for his life in the
Superier Court. Too prisoner was
brought into the Court-house looking
feeble and infirm. The cnee against
him was brought at the October term of
the Court, 1S78, and since that time and
beforo, he has been in the connty jail.
Before entering upou the case Ibe
counsel cf the prisoner filed a special plea
setting forth that the accused was not of
sound mind and demanded a Fpecial jury
to try the queet'on of his sanity. The
plea was traversed by the State. The
special jury was organized and was com
posed of George Stroyer, A. J. Davis, H.
C. Johnson, Daniel C. Driggers, Charles
McLsoghlio, John A. Berliner, George
W. Green, George W. Siratton, John C.
Van Syckle.H. hi. Taylor, John M, Alley
and Frank E. Harrison.
Mr. Foster, the jailer, was examined
as to the conduct of tbe prisoner in j ail.
The counsel of tho prisontr were niso on
tbe otand, stating among other things
that the accused eoull no: even furnish
them with a list of his witnesses. Dr.
Binckshear, the oounty phy.ician, testi
fied to the general mental condition, and
ns an expert stated that according to tit
judgment, the accused was undoubtedly
insane. The jury found the verdict,
“We, the jury, find the plea true." Tbe
olJ man was accordingly adjudged a lu
natic, and will be sent to tbe asylum.
This ends tho Swamp Molly cases.
