Exhibition—Exercises Ts-Dsr.
Among the eventa of the year none are
anticipated with more pleasure sod inter
est than the Commencement of Mercer
Uoiveraity. They always attract a very
Isrge crowd to the city and is one of ab
sorbing interest to our citizens. The
Commencement this year, from
initial steps, promises to ba mure thin
usually brilliant. As tha years pass by
tbe ties which bind college and city to
getber become strengthened until they are
one and the same in everything which
appertains to the progress of either, and
the advancement of the one ia the pros
perity of tbe other. The institution bos
imbedded itself in the hearts of our peo
pie and iti prosperity is earnestly desired.
Tho commencement nercieee were
continued on Bnnday morning at tbe
First Baptist church, where tbe bac-
chalanreate sermon was delivered
Chancellor P. H. Mail, D. D. LL. D.
Chancellor of the State University,
The sky was slightly overspread with
eloods which thickened os the bells sum
moned to chnrch. Notwithstanding this
fact, however, the ebureh was filled to
overflowing, many extra seats not fur-
niching comfortable accommodations for
the immense audience.
The pulpit, which had not escaped ihn
core of fair hands, was prettily decorated
with flowers.
In the pnipit were Rev. A. B. Camp
bell, of Colnmbns, Rev. G. n. MoQall,
D. D., of Hawkinsvillo, Rev. J. G. By-
al*, D. D., of OartersvilU', Rav. G.
Nannolly.of Romo, Rrv. M. B. Wharton,
Rev. P. H.Mell, D. D.. LL. D. D, of
Athens, Rev. A. J. Battle, D. I)., and
Rev. T. E. Skinner. D. D, oocnping
seats on the rostrum bolow the palpit. A
voluntary, aTe Dsnm in E fist. No.
by Bsnmbacb, was sang with rtmitk*
hie power, beanty and effect by the chdr
followed by a prayer by Rev. M. B.
Wharton, which was beautiful in its sim
plicity.
Chancellor Mell real tbe Scriptures,
selecting a few verses in the second chap
ter of the 1st Corinthians, followed by
few verses from the 4th chapter of tho
second Epistle to tbo Corinthians. Toe
29:h hymn commencing “Holy Somer of
Consolation," was sung by the choir in
beautiful manner.
Rev. G. A. Nunnally, of Rome, c Acred
up a fervent prayer comprehensive end
spiritual, and the chair again sang the
hymn, the first words of which are “la
spire and hearer of Prayer.”
Chancellor Mell rose nn-1 took bis
text in tbe 4th chapter of the Second
Epistles to the Corinthians. Oth verse,
“For God who commanded light to shine
out of darkness, hath shined in onr
hearts, to give the light of tho knowledgo
of the glory of God in the face of J cans
Christ.”
Opening his remarks with the enuoauc
ment that to avoid any misunderstanding
he would eay that he would preach a com
moBcemeut sermon. He could not lose
the opportunity to speak to his auditors
and especially tbe young men ns men
whom be must meet before the throne of
God.
Tho disooarao was full of fervor and
power. It was purely evangelical, with
out tho slightest attempt at oratorical or
rhetorical effects, but was marked by a
solicitude for tho eternal welfare of his
auditors, which rose above the usual
methods of commencement sermons, and
spoko from a higher plane,a desire to
pieaso the Master rather than tbe ser
vant. It was practical and searching.
The plan of salvation war clearly expoun
dud. The words of the text were ex
plained ia all of their lights. Particu
larly to be admired was tho earnest
ness of tho distinguished divine,
and bis words were uttered with forever
which made its impression on all pres
ent. It was a di course which is seldom
heard, which will ever bo remembered,
and ba followed by many good re
sults.
Hia closing words were, I esteem it
young gintlemon a great privilege to
stand before you. I am proud of this
institution; of its almnni, all over this
State. Lst me tell yon now "the conclu
sion of the rvhoto matter. I have como
to talk of tho light in the heart. If you
have i>, walk in that, and if yon have it
not, I pray God that it may shine in your
hearts.
Tho pervicei were closed with a hymn,
tho doxology, and the benediotion pro
nounced by Rev. G. R. MoCtll.
THE SOVItOlIOBC IXU11IITIOH
The Sophomore exhibition oame off
last evening at Masonic Hall before an
immense audience. The hall, spa
cious as it is, could not contain the
crowd, and the doors and windows were
thronged, besides a fringe of those who
Staid obtain scale around the edges
of the aadienco in several places. Toe
stage was handsomely decorated with
garlands. Over tbe centre of tho stage,
in a graceful curvo, is the device, "Com
mencement, 1879.”
Oa tbe stage sat President Battle, sev
eral of the professors and a number of
the trustees of the institution.
The first speaker was Mr. W. H.
Clarke, C. S„ of Coweta connty, who de
livered the "Burning of the Lexington"
in a graceful and interesting manner.
The poem is ons in which .there is con
siderable opportunity for dramatic dis
play. Mr. Oiorks seized these points and
delivered himself well, his voioe being
good, flexible and well controlled.
Mr. J. F. Eden., C. 8., of Sumter roan-
ty, had seleoted the "Lay cf the Madmio,”
and he spoke it with effect. His voice was
pitched a little low at first, making it dif
ficult for those In the remote portion of
the hall to hear, bat toward the close it
rang out with fall effeot.
Tho fine poem of N. P. Willis, "Par-
rbasins the Captive,” wu spoken by Mr.
G. J, Ford, P. D. S, of Msaon. He
•poke with the iateaee emotion demanded
by the pieoe, end eviaoed the most card-
fol stndy not only of the style but tbe
sentiments of the poem. Hie aaiing was
elegant. The selection was spoken with
thrilling effect, and many floral offerings
rewarded his efforts.
One of the most popular speeches of
the occasion was the “address of Ser
geant Butfox" in tha famous Bsrdell
breach of promise suit, by Mr. F. H
Greaves, C. S., of Jones eonnty. The
Sergeant was perfetly impersonated, and
the performance was moat admirable
throughout. The speaker was a cam
ber of times interrupted by applause.
“The Death of Virginia,” by Mr. W.
A. Jelks, ;.C. S.. of Palaskl county
won from tho aadienco many expressions
of worm approval. Selecting the feram
aoena of Knowle’s drama, Virginias, the
yocng speaker assumed the character of
all the dntmafi* persona therein having
part. he task was a very difficult one.
and was executed with skill and ability.
Mr. J. S. Jones, P. D. 8., of Maccu,
spoke the "Defense of Mirsieippi,” bv S.
S. Prentiss, and with hia easy, graceful,
manly style, gesticulation and good nn-
phasis, won a pines in the approval of
the audience.
“Catalina's Defiance,” was epoken t-y
Mr. N. W. McBryde, of Macon.
It was delivered with (tiring effect in
p strong voice, tn a forcible manner full
of energy and fire. Mr. J. C. Newman,
C. S-, of Pulaski county, spoke, "The
Modern B-lie," and from beginning to
end was greeted with applause acd
laughter. He assumed the comic tole
and made a character representation in
manner and movement unmistakable in
identity with the original they meant to
represent.
"The Komsn Soldier,” by Mr. IV. J.
Nunnally, P. D. S., of Rime, was anoth
er highly dramatic selection. Mr. Nan-
nsllv was psrtionlsily foroeful ia bis de
livery, and msde a very flue declama
tion, bis biatrionio talents winning h m
much applause. He entered fully into
his theme and made the most or a fine
selection.
Mr. W. H. Prior, C. S., of Morgan
connty. told a “Llgend of Lwhbrey
Hull.” Mr. Prior has a silvery voice,
clear and penetrating. Opening with a
few impassioned sentences, the narrative
of the selection followed, and its points
were mil well brought out. Tbs fire, the
pathos, the varying emotions of tbe poem,
making a performance which was re
markably pleasing.
Clarenaa’a Dream, by Mr. J. S. Rod
ger#, C.S.ot Burko county, was most
excellently done. Hia expression, em
phasis, enunciation and gestures wore
all fine, and hia rendition of tbe selection
wcb simply elegant.
The last Sophomore speaker wss Mr
Sim White, C. S., of Griffin. “The
Polish Boy” had been chosen, and in a
graceful manner, with a fluent delivery,
he held his audience. His stage move
ments were tree and perfectly easy, and
his delivery showed much culture and r.
high degree of excellence in tho a:t of
histrionic public speaking.
After on intermission Oiled with music
by the college band, which occupied tbe
gallery on the left of the hall during (he
evening, Rev. G. A. Nnnnally w»s intro
duced, and in a abort oddiess showed the
importance of tbe.stndy of English. It wts
full of valuable Rnd practical thought 1
c'othed ia rich and graceful language,
