Wires—me side at tne Question.
About, a year and two montbs ago a
man of sharp business qualities, rather
comely appearance and a good talker,
came to this city in the interest of Mr.
Bholes, who had been pretty well adver
tised as a Directory maker. Mr.
Sholes published a Directory in Atlanta
last year, and came to Macon and made
arrangements with Messrs. J. W. Burko
A Co., to publish oni for Mason, notice
of whieh was made in this piper at the
time. Mr. Sholes sent to Macon with
two other canvassers. Mr. Charles Nor
ton, to canvass the city for subscriptions
fer the Directory, to bo published by
Messrs. J. W. Burke A Co. Favorable
allusions in our columns to the enterprise
of Mr. Sholes were also made.
After tbo publication of the Directory,
it appears, that Sholes and Norton, so-
called, dissolved.
Toougb Norton made himself very air-
agreeable to many of oar respectable cit
izens by his unnecessary inquiries into
their private affairs, he was a very sac-
oissful canvasser and obtained considera
ble patronage, and got up quite a large
book. After the issue of the book, tbe
aforesaid Norton traveled around tbe
■mailer towns of Georgia, and succeeded
in miking other catch-penny Directo
ries, and among them a small book, pub
lished in this city, for whieh he had not,
we understand, paid in full.
Among the adventurer of the stranger
we will state that he married a vonng
widow identified with Macon, with some
property in Jones county. But it ap
pears that Mr. Norton had been mnehly
married in Pennsylvania.
Some month* ago, the Chief of Police
received a printed circular with the pho
tograph thereon, describing the man now
charged as a bigamist and embezzler,
and that be had been five times married
and that he had assumed about as many
names as he had wire*. Chief Adams
wrote to Harrisburg, Pa., and more
facta were received from the many pho
tograph* of the many wives that spotted
Norton as the identical bigamist. Testi
mony is given as to the certain marks on
his person, inch as wounds, etc., which
are now plainly Identified.
Norton, ao-oalled, had bean making up
a directory in Colambns, and was oalled
to Macon to settle some balances dne
Barks A Co., under a threat of being ex
posed. Wluu ha arrived hers there was
n requisition from the Governor of Penn
ey! rani* upon the Governor of Georgia
for bis arrest for embezzlement end biga
my. He was arreted by Officers Harley
and Wood-, and is now confined a! the
city bairacha. Ho is cola and composed
wiib Lis usual .-.mount of eheek, end

Mr. Nortt n is confident be can prove
un alibi, av.i ut.lly denies tbe charges.

Addresses Before the Alumni aud So
cieties— Banquet—J War Exhibition
Sophomore rnzei.
At Maaomc Hall jeaterday morning as
sembled a fine sized audience to listen to
the addresses before the Alnmni and lit
erary societies of the Univeieity. To*
Societies formed in front of the First
Baptist Churches, and at lea o’slock
marched to the ball, preoedud by the col
lege band. With the flattering ribbons
of red and tine they presented a splendid
appear-•'oe, bearing their atandards
proudly, and marching with precision and
a firm tread.
After the ntual preliminary exercises
Eev»W. H. Davis, of Heptzlbab. was
introduced and delivered a most appro
priate and stirring address to tbe assem
bled Alumni of the college. The effort
was fall of strong and practical thoughts,
and at times the speaker, warming to the
theme, spoke eloquently. The applause
which interrupted him *t frequent inter
vals attested tbe approval and apprecia
tion of the audience. Tbe address was
warm and full of feeling, and one whieh
will impress itself Into the mind of every
alnmnua.and will not be speedily effaoed.
It was certainly one of tbe ablest ad
dresses that has been delivered before
tbe alnmni in many years.
After mnsio by tbe baud Captain
Henry Jackson, of Atlanta, was intro
duced, and proceeded to address the
Phi Delta and Cioeronian societies. His
address was a chsste, beautiful, elegana
and eloquent effort; fall of historic re-
eesrch, graceful passages cad finished
periods.
Advancing at tbe outset the proposition
that there was a progressive improve
ment at work in the condition of the An
glo-Saxon race, be trseed tbo p base
of civilization through which thqjr races
had passed, and by the logic of events
supported his theory. After considering
tho condition of man tbroogh this era,
the condition of woman was also spoken
of. The causes of this progress were
pointed ont and declared to bu education
and woman’s influence. His flights were
lofty and well sustained, his tribute to
woman being surpassingly beautiful.
Captain Jackson's oratory ia very engag
ing.
After tbe addresses the Alnmni Associ
ation met and held a meeting, re-electing
its c(Beers and arrangement committee.
At the Lanier House at fonr o’clock the
banquet took place.
ALUMNI BANQUET.
One of the crowning pleasures of Comi
mencement proved to be tbe Alumnr
bur q net, held yesterday afternoon at fou-
o’cloek, in the dining ball of the Linier
House, at which over sixty of the Alum
ni of Mercer University were present, to
gether with members of the Board of
Trnatees and of the fooultics of the Col
lege and of the Law school, and a few
invited gaests, thus forming one of the
,most congenial and cultured gatherings
that ever circle.1 about a festive board.
The fosst first received a
blessing by the Rev. B. F. Tharps, D.
D., of Perry. Rev. J. G. Rysts, of Car-

In the absence of the President, A,
J. Battle, Professor S. P. Sanford replied
m happy terms to ‘Tho Faonlty,” the
nert sentiment proposed, relating how
the Commencements of Mercer Univer
sity had year by year increased in brill
iancy until they rtflseted a lustre upon
the enliro country.
Amid considerable applaase, Capt. J.
C. Rutherford, of Mao on, arose to ac
knowledge the sentimsnt, "The Central
City,” and in bis humorously character
istic style, won renewed cheers.
In a glowingly eloquent manner, Hon.
W. O. Tuggle, of LaGrangs, responded
to the toast, “Our Helmsmen—The
Trustees.” Words full of patriotic fire
tell from his lips, inspiring tho breasts
of all.
Mr. J. W. Cabatisa, of Maoon,then read
a letter from Colonel R. M. Johnson, of
Baltimore, nu old A cunas, sending
greeting to bis brother Alnmni, after
which tbe sentiment “Oar Absent Broth
ers," was feelingly replied to b; Rav. B.
F. Tharpe, D.D., of Perry.
"Young Graduates” was the toast upon
whieh Rjv. T. E. Skinner, D.D., of Ma
con, was oalled to respond. A more fit
ting seleetion canid not possibly have
been made. With a heart at joyously
youthful as the yonngest graduate of the
college, he refreshed every one with amus
ing anecdotes, and increased the good
hnmor cf tbe boys by advising them to
marry early—if they were able.
Tans ended the Alnmni Banquet cf
’79 —a feast abundant in the richest vi
ands and delicacies oi the season. The
pleasant recollections of the occasion will
serve as another link binding hearts to
gether with friendship’s golden band.
Tbe banqnet was all that oonld be
wished, and met the fall expectation of
every one present. It was a great credit
to Mr. Dab’s skill and taste. Tbe viands
were spread in endless profusion.

What W’c Wilt Do With It.

June 24th, 1879.
I arrived at this settlement to-day
“about 5 o’clock p. m„ and fonnd things
about as I left them. Fdw changes have
occurred since my last communication,
but as I promised to notify you of any
developments, I thought it best to write.
My frieud, the chairman, has moved
back to Vienna. He is a candidate for
Coroner, acd the law requires that to be
eligible, be shall reside in the ooucty six
montbs preoeding the election. He got
back just in time to escape being barred.
The other two of the Committee I found
on duty, though which of them bad suc
ceeded to the chairmanship was an open
question; they played “cli sledge” for
me position daily, acd it was won
and lost twice daring my short
stay. I found the safe nicety shin
gled and oovered by ivy and Madei.
ra viuef; the Committee bave laid out a
beautiful flower garden in front, and are
cnltivativating 13 acres of cotton in the
rest; they informed me that only one
more suggestion had come in since I
left; a man by the name of Blook&ctack-
1 a had brought np an elaborate plan,
illustrated with drawings, by which he
attempted to shew that a rope running
from tbe safe to the moon, would drag
it Into Vienna when the pale Empress uf
Night sank to rest. This was too mueh
for the Committee ; they put him into
one of tha rear rooms, on bread and wa
ter, for three days, until he wsb con
vinced that the mcon eat the wrong way
for Vienna. He acknowledged bis erior
ficaily, and was released, but came to
the front fence the next morning and
shouted that "he\l be if the
plaa wasn’t all right”; that "it the
rope didn’c break, either Vienna wcnld
come aronnd in tweety-fonr bears or he
would "stall the moon.” They chased
him a* far as Baker county, bat he es
caped. His reception ha* doubtless de
terred others.
The contractor came up while I was
seated ia the front vetanda, sipping
spring water with the committee. I was
glad to see him, as h-> had sent me word
ne would "whale me” unless I pat him
square on the record. I liked nia looks,
he has one—yes two—of those “unfath
omable eyes,” broad enough to hold aoy
plan. He brought with him a photo
grapher acd obtained photographs acd
measurements. He was very reticent
and mysterious. Seeing him st length
alone and in deep thought out among tee
pines, I approached him and whispered,
Woat is it? Speak! yon have the plan,
I saw it as soon as you came up. 1 see
how it is with you, it ie a mat
ter of pride, and you wid ee<
that safe Dooly delivered or dis. Y,n
want to surprise everybody though. You
want it fixed so that some of these fine
mornings the chairman pro tern, will
wake up, and, chucking the oommittee
in the short ribs, bid him look ont upon
the battlements of Vienna, while away
back yonder the son will took dawn upon
a blank space between a flower gaiden
and a cotton patch; that is year inten
tion, bat you fear to speak, lest tone
o .. should tverhear yon telling me, aad
ebi 11 that reward. Ami not right 7”
Yon ate wrong,” he said in a toy,
impressive whisper.
'I shall no: move it I intended it
ehonld break down here; tbe photographs,
the measurements, are bat deceptions—”
"What?”
"Hush t-s-s-s-c-s-e-h 1 Are you a law
yer?” ]
“No, but I have served on the jury.”
"E.oagh!’ He drew ms deeper into
tbe woods. "Be silent on tbis subject for
ever. Ia seven years yonder Committee—
my partners—will bave a “squatter’s
ti Ie’* ;o thia land. We will bave the
1 tad laid cit in town lots, sell them at a
h gh' figure, and buy the safe in as o'd
iron. 1 wdl ba appointed postmaster ana
■cast out with a fireproof pos -.ffice.” Hu
turned and lovked backward with kind
ling eyes. “I see it now ; stores, dwell
ings, public buildings stretching away in
the distance,and,towering in their midst—
a little rusty perhaps but there still—the
eafe. What do you think of it 7” It
was sometime before I could reply.
‘‘Well, let me see; the committee
must remain in peaceabla possession
seven years. They certainly have pos
session now, acd, barring an occasionsl
dispute as to the chairmanship, are
peaceable men; but suppose—suppose
for instance Macon county levies on tho
concern for taxes.”
"Let them levy. The sheriff, backed
by a nitroglyceiioe posse, conlin’c eject
those fellows after they had closed np.”
"Tine; but it strikes me he might bid
it in cheap for a county j til, and stait
basinets with a couple of tresspassers on
hand as neat egg-.”
•They are not trespassers when in the
eafe.”
“Bo: hov ab: ut obstructing the public
road 7”
"They don’t obstmet Iho road ; it ie
the eafe that does that.”
"Bet don’t it occur to yon that at the
tndof seven years Maoon comity will
hav- as good title to the safe as yoa to the
li-d!"
“due might, if she was in possession ;
but se occupy both land and safe.”
"S.ill, ie it possible,” I persisted; “eon
you keep the thing here seven years 7”
“Can 17 TOere ain’t a man in Geor
gia cau mova it in forty. True, it mijAl
eateh fire and barn down, or the w.nd
mijJit blow it away bnc wo are obliged to
uke some ebances.”
Isaidno more. When a man talks
iiony at mo, be ia welcome to both sides
of tbe argument. I left him to indulge
ia his dreams, and made my way to bead
quartets. I fonnd lb« committee in
troubi,; one of tbem bad gono into a
roar loom and clammed tbe dooi;
tie combination bad epiung and
h« was a pri oaur. His companion in
formed me that it was a cciuoiou occur-
renci; that he himself bad embed sonp
by means of a straw tbroogh a crevice
(or three days, while the other ftllow,
who wus a little tbiek-headod, practiced
with the printed directions on the lock.
In about two hours we gut him out, but
the question of who was chairman was
fer vor fettled. We extorted cf him a
total renunciation of all claims before we
released him. You Bee the chairman is
exempt from cuttiug wood and bringing
water, and where tbe thermometer stande
at 100° in the shade,it ia a valuable privi
lege. The prieoner hod been in
the habit, when he won the posi
tion temporarily, of stretching himself
and saying, ‘ I don’t want to play any
more, bring some fresh water, please.”
When he got his water he would go on
with tbe game. Thanking them for their
offer of safe quartets whenever I might
bo passing their way, I took my depart
ure, mentally resolved to put Macon
county on her guard. At tbe foot of the
hill tbe chairman overtook me, and with
a school gill blush pressed into my bands
a prophetic poem. He said it wes cuigi
nal, and aa Shakespeare, the only poet
with genius enough to bave written it
does not lay claim thereto, I reckou be
told the truth. I send it along also.
To keep her rec >rds perfectly dry,

Dool.s bought her au iron safe.
