A Ccueml Holiday.
The fourth of July will be celebrated
throughout this country with more than
ordinary enthusiasm. It has been sug
gested that it be objerved as a general
holiday. It is true that H is a national
holioay, but the eustom in the South
haa of Ute year* been more boner in
the breach than in tho observance.

do valiant service in the cause which it
could not save. It is composed of the

MERCER COMREXCEBEXr.
The Senior*’ Sprecbra—Baccalau
reate Addreas—Valedictories.
Yesterday morning closed one of the
moat brilliant commencements that has
ever been held by Mercer University.
All Ibe elements which teed toward ms-
king • fine commencement seem to
be present adding their inflaecce toward
making a great ro:oees. The perform
aneea of the sophomore* were ex
ceedingly fine, the Janiora acquit
ted themselves with signal applause,
and the Seniors did nobly. All of their
parts showed careful training and study.
Toe compositions cf the orators showed
marked improvement over former years,
and so closely memorized were they that
daring the entire Commencement not a
single reference was bad to the manu
scripts.
The attendance, especially on the even
ing exhibitions and Commentement day,
was.aU that the beet friends of the insti
tution conld wish. The hail was crowded
with one of the moatcnltivatad and refined
saliences that our city could furnish.
Besides, the attendance of the Alnmni of
the institution waa much better than it
baa been In several years, and many visi
tors from neighborisg cities lent addi
tional attractions to the occasions by their
presence. The commencement, too, has
been made more complete by the litersry
addresses of Rev. W. IT. Davis and Cap
tain Harry Jackson, of Atlanta. This is
the first time in years that both the
Alumni and society addresses fca»e been
delivered and the polished and cultivated
orations of both gentlemen were worthy
of til praise. Then, too, the Alumni
banquet and its renewal around tha fits
live board of the fealty of each Alumnus
to the institution. Ail these go to make
op one of tho most complete and highly
enjoyed of commencements.
Yesterday morning Maaonic Hall pre
sented an appearanco which was truly
elegant. One of the moat handsome and
handsomely dressed audiences that Ma
con can supply tested the capacity of the
hall.
At ten o'clock the prooea-ioa marched
into the hall, beaded by the trustees, fol
lowed by the faoulty, the city govern
ment and lha invited guests of the ocoa
aiou. The day was bright but the tsm
peraturo pleasant.

After the usual preliminary eetricts
and muaio by the Mercer bind, Mr.
Charles W. Orookett, P. D. S., of Macon,
was introduced and la a very engaging
style delivered tho Lr.ia salatatory, he
having been awarded by tho faculty the
amend honors of his elass. Toe task
which at best Is a thoughtless one was
admirably performed, Mr. Crocket: rna-
fciug a very favorable impression even
with lbr,to tba majority of the audience,
aointelligible ancient language. Mr.
Eugenins A. Niabet, P. D. S. t of Putnam
oennty made ’’Newspapers" the target for
mrny keen arrows of thought, aiming
weak place of the greatest of
all the civilizers. His thoughts were
well studied, and his sentences
strong and pointed. His oration was
listened to by the audience, a forci
ble delivery engaging their attention
and at freqaent intervals winning their
•pplsnse. Mr NKbot is oue of the moat
popular young gentlemen of the dives,
and did himself fall jaitioe. His lady
friends did not forget him, bat a lavish
enpply of flowers found their way to the
stage after hie final bow.
Mr. Robert Walker, C. S , of Eufanla,
Alabama, one of the b;-st speakers of
the class, was honorably c leased.
Development of Mind" was treated
with marked power by Mr. Eichard H.
Blalock, of Houston oounty. His thoughts
wero solid wisdom, and bis reasoning the
result of res< arch, and true in its deduc
tions and eonclueicn*. Mr. Blalock is s
good speaker, bat wins attention more
by his clear and strong thoughts than
the graces of his pleasing oratory.
Mr. P. A. Jessup, c. 3., of FuU-ki
county, to the regret of many, was hon
orably excused.
Mr. Sydney O. Bronson, P.
D, S., cf Macon, made a capital
oration on the subjsot “Indifference to
law and to the duties of a cit z?n” the
tendencies of the age toward a total disre
gard of law and the violations of the
canons of society were pointed out Toe
increase of crimo in the land was pointed
out and the statement made that the
national character had been tainted and
its reputation dishonored. The fre
quent appeals to lynch lsw were cited in
form of tho theories bs advanced. He
spoke well and earnestly.
Tire character of Julins Caesar” was
selected from the “corridors of history"
snd brought before the audience by Mr.
Frederick W. Glover, P. D. S , of Twiggs
county. He epeke in a manly,
gallant style with excellent gesticulation.
The character chos-n waa treated in all
its lights acd compared with others illus
trious on the historic psge, and showed
that the orator had been a student not
only of the life of the character under
reTiew, but had patiently traversed the
intricate paths of history.
The honorary oration was daliverxd by
Mr. Kiebet Keil, of Evtonton, on the
ather singular subject, “A plea
for Vegetarianism.’" Tho subject was
handled in a very elaborate and cuiqno
manner. The periods of the oration were
flowing and easy, ofttimea graceful, with
gentle hnmor that gave variety. It
was contended that the diet of a nation
had its effect on its civilixation. The
speech, by its originality, both in se
lection of tho theme and in thought, at
tracted tha attention of tha audience,
and it did r.ot flig to the end.
After an internal, which waa pleasing
ly filled wllbjmnsio, the cin.’erringof de
grees tcok place. Dr. Battle rose acd
announced that the degree of Master of
Arts wss conferred on Rev. John A. Ivey,
of Dawson, of the class of '75, and Mr. T.
E. Mnrphey, of Bornesvills, of ’76.
Tfiedegieeof Bachelor of Arts was
deferred on all the members of the S- □
ior class, twenty-two in nnmbsr.
Following tbo presentation of the di
plomas, Dr. Bittle delivered one of tte
polilbtd baccalaureates which he always
prenonnees.
The sdvies contained was highly prac
tical, and will, we are persuaded, with its
golden suggestions, be treasured in tbe
memory t f each yoaog grodaite.
Hon. Clifford Anderson, in behalf of
the law school, presented a diploma to
tbe cnly representative of that depart
ment of the University this year. At the
beginning of the year there werefonr, but
sickness compelled tnree to seek
their homes, leaving Mr. James E. Ilol-
omon alone. In a brief, but poiated
speech. Judge Anderson presented thfc
diploma, n.ing tbe following highly m m-
plimeat ary language.
From my intercourse with you I know
yon have the capacity for success, and
yon have but to apply your gifts to this
to take a bright place in the prof-s-ioo
yon have chosen.
Mr. Burrell R. Calhoun, P. D. S., first
honor, of Montgomery county, delivered
the valedictories. The beaten path fol
lowed so closely by all was forsaken and
Mr. Calhonn launched out in i
strain unique and quite original
Tbe Trustees were first addressed

presided over such an important institu
tion as Mercer. The Faculty wss next

classmates, intermingling them with ad
vice couched in language which showed
that the speaker was possessed of lha’
freedom of thonght acd grasp of
intellect whioh marks the man
of brains. He baa borne tbe heat sed

through the entire oonrse, and the
success of yeatorday was indeed deserved.
The bmediotion was pronounosd by Riv.
