Raster Albert Callaway Accidentally
aboota Himself.
Tne city was thrown into a quire of
suipriec, followed by regret, ycatord.y
afternoon about 6 o’clock by the report
hat Master Albert C. Callaway had been
found dead in bts room, at the reiidccc:
of bis father, on Plum street.
It seems yoang Callaway, who is a
mere lad some sixteen years of age, rooms
up stairs in bis fathet’s residence. Yes
terday at dinner he seemed to be cheer
ful and took dinner as tuoal. When he
came in he was whistling and
seemed to bo in a good humor.
After dinner he went out but it
seems retarned and went np to bis room
and about half pa.t four o'clock he died
from the effects of a pistol shot wound-
The commission of the fatal deed was not
discovered for nearly two hours after
ward when one of the family went acci
dentally into the room and, finding the
corpse bathed in its own blood, gave the
alarm.
When the lifeless boly was dissevered
then it was called to mind that a pistol
shot bad been heard in the home about
two hours previously. It wai not notic
ed much, and wbat little impression the
report made was obliterated by a very
heavy clap of thnnder, which came al
most at the instant of the report.
Tho body lay on its back, the feet
slightly apart. The left hand was bloody,
as it after tho unfortunate shot ba bai
endeavored to atannch the flaw of the
life stream. The face wore a beautiful
expression, the features almost lit np
with a amile oven in death. The wound
was necessarily a fatal one. The ball
eotvred the left breast iatt at the nipple,
ranging downward and coming out near
the amall of the back. It probably
touched the heart in Its course.
Yesterday Coroner Chapman was noti
fied and he proceeded to hold an inquest,
and the following evidence wai brought
oat:
Willie Callaway, brother of tbe de
ceased sworn : I came to dress to go to
tbe depot to meet my sister and found
brother Albert lying on the fl»or with
blood on the floor. Tne pistol was lying
at bis feet. This wai 6:10 p. m. Al
bert C. Callaway bad not been on the
premises all the afternoon. Ai toon as
I saw tbe body I went down stairs and
told about it. Tommie Small was with
me.
Miss Addle Gregory sworn: When
Willie and Tommie Small came dowo
stairs and cxolitlmed that thers wai a man
np stairs laying dead with a pistol at bis
feet, I went np at ones and found that
it was Albert. 1 heard tbe report lh»
time of tho thunder, about 4:30 or 5
o’clock. Tnera was no one up stairs a:
the time that I know of. Hia feet were
a little apart as be now lies, fl j was to
a good humor at dinner. No one went
np stairs with him that I know of. I
know of no cause why ha should oommit
tbe aot. His bsaitb was good a’ud bis
mind sound. Ho must hive been io front
of i he mirror.
After considering the evidence, tho
jary rendered the following verdict:
We, the jury, find that th™ deceased,
Albert C. Callaway, came to bis deatb by
accidental shooting, with a Smith A
Wesson pistol, in his own band.

To-day the commencement of Enory

close a year of great success for the Col

Colli ge this year has been more satisfac

than any other year in the past fire.
The students have paid greater attention
to their duties, and the discipline has
been easy and readily enforced, but few

view of ail tho facts, a very brilliant
commencement is anticipated by the

Djy before yesterday there arrived in
this city a quiet lcokiog man, registering
himself asS. J. Aodereoa.of Harrisburg,
P>-cn--ylvania. Thia quiet looking strang
er went npto tbe barracks and accosted
the iomate of one of the cells as follows:
"How are yon, Charles!” Instantly J.
N. Swartz, alias Chas. A. Carl, alias I.
Newton, alias Chos. A. Norton, locked np
with a startled expression upon his lace,
tho next be wilted. The stranger was
the detective who, nearly two years ago,
attached ihe picture of a criminal to a cir
cular wed sent it over the oonnlry. That
orimioal was Norton; bis crime, “Con-
strnc'uve larceny,” in Pennsylvania pa--
1 ince, that was tb: orime for which be ia
wanted, bat it teems there ue others of a
baser character for which he msy yet
have to answer. From a letter written
by bis brother-in-law, J. P. Tedrowe, cf
Indiana polls, Indians, a oopj of whioh we
were permitted to inspect, we obtained a
sketch of the villainies of Nortoo
up to date of the document. Six liross
married, a forger, a thief, wife whippe,
and a defaulter ; these are some of the
facta famished by the letter, and it can cot
be possible tbat the writer knew all bis
villainies at the tim6 cf writing, or that
the criminal ceased to commit them after.
The credit of this arrest belonga to
Chief of Polics Adams, whose memory
enabled him to recall the features of
Norton, and identify him as the snbjee:

The attraction in Forsyth this week
will bathe ommenoement of Monroe
Female College. Its commencements are
always of the greatest interest. The
college is in a flourishing condition and
the literary attraction?, taken as a whole,
will bo unsurpassed by those of any pre
vious year.
The commencement sermon will he
preached this morning by Rav. Dr. J. B.
Hawthorne, of Montgomery, Alabama.
His sermon before the Mercer students
last year wiil be remembered with great
pleasore in M icon ae one of tbe moat able
discourses that hm been delivered here on
a similar occasion. He ia one of the most
distinguished divines of the Biptist de
nomination in Alabu&v. The reverend
gam lemon on Monday will also deliver a
lectore. Other attractions will fallow as
the commencement progresses. It iB
likely qnite a numbar will go up to For
syth, especially on commencement day.
Tne hospitality of tho Forsyth people
daring- the oommenomon', and at any
other time tbat the stranger comes with
in her gates, cannot bs exceeded. The
crowd this year at tho commencement
will be very largo. Yesterday the trains
pissing throagh ciat crowded and went
away almost empty. Many yonng
ladies f.-cm Atlanta, Griffis, B-rnesville-
and other point a have already arrived.
The ccmrr.enjjment will bo brilliant not
only in regard to the exercises, bat the
crowd of visitors.

Yesterday the rooms of a prominent
dentist of this oity were witnesses of a
remarkable and, to some extent, a ludic
rous scene. It eeems that a widow lacy,
lately removed to tho oity, ha]
osrried an old set of teeth to the dentist
afore-aid to have them made over, upon
a new plati; being very poor, the dentist
charged her only half prioo, v.z : $15 for
the j ob.
Yesterday afternoon ths lady called for
her tooth, tried them io, and begged to
bo credited for tae amount due, stating
tbat she was willing to pit np h:-r watch
as oalUteral until tbe money wss forth
coming. Although the dentist does baai
ness upon a strict oasb basis, in consider
ation of Ibe circumstances before stated,
he consented to ths arrangement. She
then changed her mind and left the o'-
fice, not, however, before she was required
to leave the teelb.
In about an hour she retained and get
ting the teeth in her month again, said
e’ie would goto a joweler, raise fifteen
dollars on her walcb, return an I piy for
ths teeth, when tho dentist refusing to
let her leave tha room in company with
h>s work unpaid for, she badly claimed
the teeth as oer own and male a dash
for tha stairs ; upon being overtaken she
screamed “mnider!” in an agonizmg
voice, and threatened the dentist with
an exposure of the insults offered her in
the room ; the gentleman relying on the
justness of his cause, and his ionoc -rc
hia wife and niece having been present
all the time, kept his bold upon her, and
only avoided having his owu work tried
npon his fingers, by a rapid manipula
tion of them. A police officer arrived
and after sullenly waiting a half boar on
the steps, the lady gave up the jub aud
retired.

The Sanitary Condition of onr
Jail.
Editors Telegraph A Mersingoh-Po ranch
has been said of late concerning fis pani,li
nn nt of criminals that it is time tp consider
in what way that punishment eholld bo ad
ministered and to see tint justice he given
tbe innocent as well as the guilty.
These remarks were suggested hy a pro-
fessioual visit which tha author w is receut-
lv requested to mako to the county jaU.
We an kaow that a j aU is intended far a
place ot confinement only and ills not ex
pected that any one is sent then) for pnnich-
C lent, lor frequently men are placed there
n charges of wbich they are perfectly inno
cent. To be confined in onr ja£in its pres
ent condition is far wor.e than to ba eeut
to the penitentiary, and if a mm is charged
witbammor offinco it is better to plead
guilty, even thongh he ho incorent and be
sentenced to barn labor for a fev years than
to be shut np in the e.nnty priion awaiting
trial for half tbat time. If a person is not
blessed with a good censtitutim, a year in
onr jail will nsoally ia * k j him a complete
wreck, both physically and mentally. In
making these ch-rges I do not wish to oast
blame on any of the oonney officers, for I do
not think it is their fault. The unhealthy
location of the jail is one cause of these
hordeh pa Another is, very imperfect. v?n-
tilation While we sit in our homes and of
fices with oar doors wide op or and complain
bitterly o f ths hot weather, would it not be
w.-lt to think for a m.ment of what the pcor
wretches in onr prison endure ? The room
in which the patient I visited wis confined
had ore small cross-1 aired wkdav. high np
from the door and a eimnar opening ia the
door. Three oth«r prisoners were in ihe
same room It did not contain a single
piece of fnmitnre. The diet may bs as good
aa can be given with tbe present allowance,
but from what was told ns, it is certainly
very t-lain. Would it not be well to pay the
keeper a salary and make such appropriation
for ro d aa the case may demand ?
These remarks have been confined to the
Bibbcmnty Jail, boil have reaeon to be
lieve that many others throughout the State
are equally deserving of cemore Of course
a prisoner ia not expected to be fnmi, hed
arith every comfort of life, but he should at
