The Chronicle reports the weather of
the week ending last Friday as unusually
favorable for the cotton crop. In the

(Galveston) there had been two showers
on two days during tbo week. One bale
of new crop cotton had been received
from Dewitt county, nnd another would
arrive on the 4:b.

also very dry in Tennessee, but oollon

Gold nr thr Tr«asu*t.—There waa,
s>ys tbe Baltimore Sun, $1,850,000 of
geld drawa out of tho Treasury between
June 1 and June 14, against $400,000
drawn oat in the five month* before.
This gold was draws for export. But
tbe gold receipt* of the Treasury for the
same period have been heavy, aud there
is now more in the sub-treasury vault*
than there was on Janu try 1, so that re-
eumption ha* strengthened iustaad of
weakening tbe specie resources of the
givernment. The imports of specie (at
New York) ap to June 14 from January 1
have been $4,779,412, against $12,729,183
for tbe tame period lost year, and an av
erage of $4,700,000 for tbe same period
ia the past eight years, so that the
figures for tho present year may baas-
sained to be entirely normal. Tbe ex
port* of specio from New York between
January 1 and June 14 have been $10,-
'47.433, against $3,532,307 for same pe
riod last year, and aa averaga of abuut
$23,300.0011 far the same period far eight
year* previous to this. Resumption has
thus resulted in anything else bat a drain
of speoie, nor is it likely taat a change
in ths baUuos of trade, sack as is indica
ted by the redaction of the line of ex
port* aud the inoreaso in imports, will
oautn a drain of goll uni u* this change
ehonll bs accompanied with a decline in
the price of U jtted S:*la3 bond*, of which
there is no present likelihood.
The Philadelphia North American says
Mr. Weightinan, surviving member of
tne chemical firm of Powers .t Weight-
man, naid yo.terlay to a reporter that
toe abolition of tho duty on qainino by
Congress will compel them to stop the
manufacture ot this important drug.
They will work off the material on hand
to about two months, after which tbe
quinine department will be practically
closed, eighty men be.ng thrown out of
employment. Mr. Wetghtman stated
that their agents had been instructed to
draw off all offers for bark, and their Eu
ropean agents not to purchase any more.
It wonll be impossible for American
manufactures to compete with European,
because they can secure the bark at
much lower rates than we, and they pay
much less for labor.
There are, we think, three manufactur
ers of qninine in the United States, and
if they do as large a business as Powers A
Weighttnin, which is doubtfal, they em
ploy 210 workmen altogether. Now, the
crude material used in the mannfantare
being imported, the interests of these
mills and employees comprehend the en
tire benefits of this oppressive bounty,
which, it seems difficult to believe could
hive been kept up for twenty years, add
ing daily to the impoverishment ami
vexation of the sick for the mere purpose
of unrighteously benefitting such a little
knot of people. I: i* a curious and
strong illustration of what lobbying can
effect and maintain in the way of class
legislation.

six o’clock in tbe morning. The bta-.

people on the shore, most of them waiting
to get on b a-d and go down the lake to
Qainstgamond Park, where the horse
aud foot race* were being held. B--
fore we cauld get out the gang plank
the crowd began to swarm over the side
of tbe boat, and to take places on tbe
hurricane deck, regardless of the pro
tests of the captain and otter officers of
the boat. The deck became to crowded
that a strain on its powers grew visible.
A swaying motion was soon noticed, end
«s the crowd thickened on tbe deek tbe
motion became decidedly unpleasant.
The edge of tbe deck daring the rocking
etrack the end of the pier, and tbe
sound a* well a* the shook created a
panic. Thu paeaengers rushed to one
side, the hurricane deck slipped from its
fastenings, nnd, with its load of bnman
freight, awnings and smokestack, slid
into the water. That is a true story O’

The Factory Closed. — Bait-bridge
Democrat : Lust week the cotton faotorv
at this place succumbed to tbe inevitable
and otased operations, fur tbe present at
least. Jndge Black, the superintendent
and manager, lett tbe day before for Ala
bama, : l'tog Home of theoperctives that
bo wonld not be buck before fall uulers
he made arrangements to procure cotton
prior to that time. The operatives not
having been paid m some time attached
tho stuck and quit woth.
Tho reason of this suspension war from
tbe total lack uf means on the port of
Judgo Black to ran tho mill; and from
wbut we oan learn the parties iu New
York who own the oonaern and at whose
solicitation he earns to Bainbricge, “went
back on him,” to nee a slang expression,
and allowed his drafts to go to protest.
Mr. Blaok tnaae several accounts about
town amounting in all to. t-omething over
e thousand dollars, bat we nmlersiand
that be bus written to tbe parties am-
c.nned, awunng them that ho will see
that every dollar is paid.
We are porry of this suspension for
many reasons, chief of which is the
moral effect it will have abroad, as it
will bs he'd by our rival* that it is a
Bsinbridge failure, while tbe truth is
our people had no interest in it, save
to give it their good will nnd encourage
ment. Mr. Black came here a stranger,
and tbe parties to whom the factory be
longs are strangers. They asked no aid
of Bainbridge, and we thought them
abundantly able to take care of them
selves.
We hope, however, satisfactory ar
rangements will be made and tbe mill
set to work again hood.
TnoMAsviL-ji Times: Tha continued

paired to the spot, and commenced to
drag the pond. At seven o’clock the

just where he went under, the water
having fallen sufficiently to allow wading.
He was the son of Mrs. E. M. Curtis, and
was universally beloved by those who
knew him. The occurrence has cast a
gloom over the entire community, who
deeply sympathize with the widowed end

followed young Bice on his way home,

while anotner went through him for tbe
manuscript. Then, at the in-tigation of
the Leader, Bice swore out a warrant and
had the three reporters arrested for high

side; the patient is rarely able to lie
on the left side; sometimes the pain
is felt under the shoulder blade, and
it frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken
for rheumatism in the arm. The stom-
afch is affected with loss of appetite
and sickness; the bowels in general
are costiye. sometimes alternative with
lax; the head is troubled with pain,
•accompanied with a dull, heavy sen
sation in the back part. There is gen
erally a considerable loss of memory,
accompanied with a painful sensation
of having left undone something which
ought to have been done. - A slight,
dry cough is sometimes an attendant.
The patient complains of weariness
and debility; he is easily startled, his
feet are cold or burning, and he com
plains of a prickly sensation of the
skin; his spirits are loav; and although
he is satisfied that exercise would be
beneficial to him, yet he can scarcely
summon up fortitude enough to try it.
In fact, he distrusts every remedy.
Several of the above symptoms attend
the disease, but cases have occurred
where few of them existed, yet exam
ination of the body, after death, has
shown the liver to have been exten
sively deranged.
AGUE AND FEVER.
Du. C. McLaxr’s Liver Pills, in
cases op Ague and Fever, when
taken with Quinine, are productive of
the most happy results. No'better

disease to give them a fair trial.
