Ef w Macon Una u panic Yesterday.
Toe weak maiket yesterday canstd a
great d, el of tXntemeat in Mecou. It
opened with the panicky feeling still
strong upon it end ran everything wild
by tumbling to 395 cents for August
dear nbe.
It afterwards rose and stood steady at
d Ceuta for an hour or so, when it began
to rise, and closed at 4 22}. To crown
the tr.nbie of tho Macon investors a tele
gram came m about 2 o’clock stating
that T. J. Martin, Jr., correspondent of
Oap.ain Carnes, had gone down in the
crash, and oouid not make good hie con
tracts. Ail margins waioh word paid in
and coat off were swept away, and about
ten thousand dollars taken out of Macon
at one iwcep.
ThetfSoaey o! garnishments trero in
Yoksd and the banks'gaini-hsod for any
money to T. J. Martin’s credit. It is
generally believed that the favorable
news from Memphis will give tbo market

THE GISKSX CASE.

R, cctvrd.
To- jury in tae G:uson case remained
c: :..lnight in tne grand jury rooo t
.nd yesterday morning re nrned into
. rn coart and delivered their verdict to
he Judge. Toe verdict, to the gr>at
urp .-e of all was complete acquittal
It woe read by Mr. W. G. Coltma-,
foreman of the jary. Its ennoancement
wss greeted wub a slight round of
a, plains on the part of Mr.
<i,bs-jt.’< fiiecdr. Thta was prompily
mccked by JaJge Wright, and two of ibr
pariioiy.n a fine ', $5 < sob.
Ten prisoner cv.nctd no emotion at the
eoaitioa of tbo vordiot and soon after
Eft the Coart room and went to bis resi
dence on S,cond street.
The jury was discharged by tbs Jadge
presiding and tbe term of the Court ad-
j turned.
■Jh-j jurors were very reticent in re
gard to wtat occurred in tbe jury room,
having catered into an agreement not t^
iitcluso the secrets ot their proceedings
We have been enabled, however, to
learn from various sources how tbe ju
rors stood cn the very important issue
before them. When the jury first te
tired it is understood they were six for
acquittal and six for the grades cf homi
cide. The ballotling proceeded, quite a
aambe-r being taken, the jury standing
at length about eight for acquittal and
four for conviction, ons being for tho ex
treme penalty of the low. Tons mat
ters stood until three o’clock yesterday
morning, when another ballot was taken
and those who were standing for con
viction begsn to waver, and yesterday
morning, after breakfast, the verdict wa
rned* up, Mr. Puttie, of the Warrior Dis
trict, being tbe last man to yield.
Tho verdict of the jury was received in
the city with mingled feelings of aston
uhment and indignation. The prevalent
belief was that a mistrial would be made,
but an acquittal was entirely unlooked
for, in view ot all the circnmatances of
the case. If there ever was a
community which felt itself outraged it
was Macon yesterday, on tae publication
to the world of the verdiot by the jury.
This felling was not concealed, men pro
claimed it on tbe street ocmers.and freely
expreeted their condemnation of the
twelve jurors who sat cn tbe case. Some
intimated that tho jary was packed, and
that some of tbe wiines-.es for the defense
bribed, and some even going so far as to
sty that they would not now belitvs tbe
jurors cd their oaths. These are no fi ghts
of the imagination, ba: simply a r.ci
ul of the eeutiments of some of
the most iaw-abidug end bes'
men of onr community. The verdict
certainly did mnoti yesterday to break
down the cctfidence which every eitizor
ehonld he able to place in the protection
of tno S>ate, and made all feel that they
held their safety in their own bunds.
Toe importance of tne issues at stake
cannot be over-estimated, and we dreap
the era commenced on the 31 of Novem
ber last and sanctioned yesterday mern
The voiod of the jary is tbs law of the
land. It ia now the law here, and with
thorn rest tbe respcnsibilitiea for tbe con-
e quetices which will follow. Just such
verdiotu aud just each aots of enmiuui
violenos which for to the basis of this
wr.ole transaction bring Slathern society
and Southern civil zation into disrepute.
Wo do net speak from a pcisonal
stand paint, bn: for tho high ground of
public justice. The remedy must be ap
plied by tbo people in an improved sen e
of justice, and until then tho present
state of lifT-tirs most be en lured.

tho M-oou end Angn-ia toed, discovered e
colored man lying across tha trick, with
bis body slmoit severed, bis
brad lying outside of the rails,
between the cross-ties. Hs notifi.-d oth

moned. A jury was soon made up. The
investigation showed that the d catsol
had been hanging around the depot tbe
day before icq iinog the fare to Midedge-
vilto and saying he had no money. It
wss supposed that be bad endeavored to
steal a ride between the cars, lost bis
bold and fell between and was killed. A
verdict was brought in in accordance
with those facts.
His body was terribly mangled, being
severed, the halves being only attached
by tbe flesh of tha left hip. Bis lower
extremities and bead were fearfully
broiled. No one recognized him. He
was given burial by tbe Coroner.

List evening at the new parsonage of

pleasant entertainment took place. The
earlier portion of the evening was spent

Afterward, ail sought the lawn by the

The music under the trees was especially
charming. Tae affair was largely amen
