Toe writr-r, in his recent viait to At
lanta, fennd tbat tbe Macon It Bruns
wick rail road waa corn to be a live and
important question b.fo.-e the Legial*-
tnrr.
Some advocate Us nccouditionsl sue;
other* a 1< aae for a term of Year*, and
not a few belieTe it would be wtll for
the State to allow Col. Adame and tbe
present Commteeionere to continne to op
erate tbe road aa hitherto, until there ia
& general revival of business and a sale
can be eff-cted at a fair valoation. Bat
there is etiil another project which has
recently taken shape end U backed by
powerful influence, and indeed is about
to be introduced in tbe form of an slab-
arm to bill before the Legislature, which
is a* follows:
The present number of Commissioners
to be enlarged by the cdlition of Co!. 0
C. Kibbe», of Uawkinaville, and James
M. Cooper, E;q., of Brunswick.
It is then proposed to lease the road
with the necessary protection to tbe Stale
by proper bond and eecnrity, at a min
imam figure, not leas than sixty thou
sand dollars per annnm, psyabla in equal
monthly installments. Tbe eatd lessees
to be aceorded tbe privilege of extending
tbe road from Atlanta to Macon, to Amer-
icoa from B&wkinsville and to Jackson
ville from tbe nearc st available point on
the M. and B. B. B. This route will be
nearly on an air line with the Cincinnati
Southern from Chattanooga to Cinsin-
nati.
The propneed extensions lo Jackson
ville and Americas are left optional with
the lessees, but tbe completion and equip
ment of tbe projected road to Atlanta
are made compulsory within throe years,
under penalty of forfeiting the lease.
Should no lease be effected on
these terme, the Board of Com
missioners, aa above constituted,-a au
thorised to continue to operate the road
as at present, with enlarged powers in
fatnre. The lease is limited to s period
of twenty yeats, or may be made to ter
minate at tho txpirauon of that of tbe
Western and Atlantic railroad, which
his thirteen years still to ran. It is
agreed that the lessees, if they desire it,
shall have the privilege of purchasing
the road at any time after its completion
to Atlanta at a fair price,to be determined
in some way mentioned in the act.
Tbe principal point insisted upon is tbe
extension to Atlanta. Several available
rentes ere enggested, to-wit:
On the East side of the Oomulgee,
nearly on sn air line to Atlanta, only eev-
entj-five miles in length.
A second, known as the “ridgo tonte,”
has already been surveyed, and passes
through Jones, Jasper, Newton and Bock-
dale counties, and is estimated to bo
aboat ninety miles in length.
There is still another route by way of
Covington and the Georgia railroad to
Atlanta, whioh ia considered quite prao-
t.oable. Any ono of the above lines
would’render available, water power suffi
cient on the Ocmalgeo to ton a dczju
Lowells, and besides develop and bring
to market the varied products of etveral
of tbe richest connties in Georgia. To
prove this we bave only to show from tbe
recent report of tbe Comptroller Geoetal,
tbat tbe taxable property of the
oounty of Jasper amonoted to
f1,202,221; that of Jones to $1.126 545:
I hat of Newtoc to $2 €65 717. and Hint o!
Rockdale to $1,340,681. There teeming
districts have never heard tbe energising
whiatlo of the locomotive, and tbe con-
s:raotion of this road wonld soon double
tbe taxable value of the landed estates,
aud add greatly to tbe volume also of
their agricultural prodneis.
We cannot but think tbat if tbe pro
posed lease of the Macon and Brunswick
railroad can be eff cted with proper guar-
antees to the State on the proposed terms
of tbe above bill, it will prove of signal
advantage to our city, while at tbe same
time greatly benefilting tbe people of
those counties which will be traversed by
the extension.

THE NORTHEASTERN RAILROAD BONDS.
Tne majority aud minority reports of
the Novembsr session on tbe matter ot
the endorsement of these bonds having
been re committed, we leirn through
Mr. Wiight, of Richmond, that tho new
report which will probably be introduced
to-day, completely exonerates the Gover
nor from any complicity or blame what
ever in the premise?. There ia eo men
tion made of Mr. Murphy’s bargain with
rue tolling mill, as that was an outside
issue whixb the courts will, in due timo
it is said, determine. A bill, however,
is. or will be reported, to prevent the re
currence of such transactions in future.
Mr. Wright is of the opinion that tbe new
report wlli bs adopted with but little, if
any opposition. Surely tbe fact ia patent
to all mat our noble Governor is as guilt
less of any connection with the business
arrangement made by Murphy with Mor
rill, as an angel in heaven. Bothotibe
iast mentioned parties assure tbo writer
that General Colquit was wholly ignorant
tbat Mr. Murphy had been feed in the
cose. The report also declares that the
Governor was not in any way influenced
by Mnrpby’e facts and statements. They
were already known to him. Tho writer
happens to be able to vouch to this also
from a private interview with his Excel
lency p. ndmg the signature of the North

LOCAL LEGISLATION
The multitudinous bills emanating
from evoty corner and section of the
State of a private or municipal charac
ter, are pouring in like an avalanche un
der the two-thirds rule, and they are re
ferred with equal rapidity to the Com
mittee on “Local Bills.” Speaker Bacon
dispatches business like magic. When a
bill is introduced end read at 2.40 pace,
by general agreement, instead of a call
of the yeas and nays as was supposed to
be necessary, tbe Speaker disposes of i:
by a
RISING VOTE OF THE HOUSE,
the yeas standing until they can ba coun
ted by the clerk, and then the positions
being reversed, the voico in the nega
tive w heard and recorded.
X his saves an immense amount of time.
Unless tho local measure is general in its
effect and operation, it is very seldom
that a single objection is made. In doe
season the wboie will be reported upon
by the appropriate committee, and many
bills of a kiuured character adopted to
gether. This is one cf the wisest provis
ions ot the new constitution.

On the 3d ot July the accomplished
Speaker of the House of Representatives,
Hon. A. 0 Bason, returned to Macon to
pass tue National holiday with bis family.
On hia arrival he was presented with an
other noble little son and heir, who had
just made his advent upon this mundane
sphere. There was great rejoicing at
tne auspicious event, and when i he speak
er returned to the Capital a deputation of
members nominated, not tbs Major, but
tbe little stranger to the Gubernatorial
chair of Georgia. If he should be elect
ed and his able sire made regent pend
ing the attainment of bis majority, in .to
is not the least danger that the State
would not be well governed in the in
terim. This is the youngest nomination
on record.
' THE DROUGHT
i3 simply fearful. All along tbe line of
railroad from Athens to Macon the cora
is almost past redemption. Miny acres
canoot yield one bushel, if it rained until
Christina*. Cotton, coo, is small and
overfroiting itself. Tho weed, however,
looks healtuy, and if seasonable showers
would set in soon, so as to start it to
growing gradually again, a fair crop
may yet be realized. A glut of rain
would cause the plaut to put forth a rap
id second growth wbich would make it
cast the plentiful crop of fruit with
which it ia now laden. The situation is
indeed gloomy.
