Mr. Burr Brown comes to the front
this morning with the extra inducement
that he will fatnish carriages for funeral
occasion* free of charge. This is the
most liberal off or we have ever kaown of.
It is not, however, to be eonstrned into
an inducement to aheffii off th a ooil of

Mr. Brown means what bn says. Bead

He says if it will rain soon on his oorn

Tiie Heat.
The thermometer yesterday went, if
anything, a little higher than the day
preceding. Tan atmosphere was like a
farnaco, everything seemed heated np
to a point where combustion wa* immi

stood between one hundred end three
and fear. The in.tramen: was, howev
er, some-thtf in the raya of the sun.
The barometer fell three-tenths of an
neb, indicating a change of some kind
to tak* place soon.
It is ooaaoling, however, that the mer
cury In several other Georgia cities and
places futlber North, had mounted even
above M icon's highest figure.

A letter from the detective who had
Net ton, alias Carl, the directory nan, in
charge who recently came so conspicu
ously before the public, announces that
after lio left Macon and about fifty miles
were placed between him and cur city
he made a free confession to all the
charges on which he was arrested ia this
ci'y. Since hi* arrival at home hs has
been before the courts. We find the fol
lowing accjnnt of his trial in the Harris
burg, Pennsylvania, Independent. The
detective in charge of the prisoner speaks
in bis letter m high terms of praise of
the kind treatment received at the hands
of onr officers and citizens.
There wa* a largo attendance of spec
tators at the Mayor’s office this morning
to get a glimpse of Carl, the bigamisr,
who was given a hearing at 9 o’clock.
Tne prisoner was ecarceiyirecognizable
by those who thought they “had him
down fine," a3 he wore a large pair of
blno glasses and a fall beard.
Upon the removal of the Rla53cs, how
ever, which allowed the upper para of his
face and large nose, (which by the way
has grown into greater prominence owing
to sickness), to become plainly visible,
the expression, “chat it wa3 the same old
fellow,” was di3tictly audible. He wa3
very tastily dressed in a light colored
anit, word a light hat, and during the
hearing did not utter a word. Three
charges were preferred against him, two
of false pretense by Messrs. Cammings'
and Brady, jewelers, and one of bigamy,
preferred by hi3 wife in this city. He
was h< Id in default of $1,000 bail on each
charge. He appears much humiliated,
and evidently sought to hide hia shame
by means of the large glaaaes.
Jest as the prisoner was leaving the
dock a young sen of tho woman whom
Carl had married in this city two years
ago stepped np to him and eaid :
“Well, what have they got you here
foi?”
Cail, with the Indifference wbioh he has
manifested all along, turned on his step
son, and in a surly tone said:
“I don’t know you.”
“But I know you, retorted tho boy.
“You married my mother about two years
ago when you hsd another wife and then
ran away; for half a cent I’d bring a
charge against you for stealing that ten
dollars of mine.”
The prisoner did not reply to this acca-
iatlon, and, before the small boy bad a
chance to pat ia another word, Carl was
rapidly taken to his quarters in jail.

Banal arming of individuals unnecessary,
ta the confidence that the law affords

Stern Reflections.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger: A se
rious que* ton 1* torced upon tne citizens
of this county by the recent trial for mur
der and it* result. What protection
have we against attacks from drunken,
lawless rowdies who may meet us on the
streets of the city or the roads of the
couotry round its eubarbs ? There is
none evidently from the juries impan-
□eled according to the law* of the State.
For wiihm the last five years probably
nearly a dozen cases of wilful murder
nave bt-en disposed of, in this county,
ana where is there a single man at pres-
ent working out a eentence for these
crime* ? Or where ia there a reeord of
toe penalty of the law having been exe
cuted in any ease of tbiskind? While
other counties are asserting the maj-sty
of the law, and affording protection t*
citizens, Bibb county ha3 the unenvia
ble notoriety of being a place of s.fety
for reckless slayers of men.
Moreover, every discouragement
given by onr courts to the adoption of
wcat natural law requires under such a
state of things, self protection. Toe hne

pons baa set the administrators of the
law on a raid agains; this mode of ce-
fense, and the heaviest penalties that c*n
be levied are being enforced. So that

loss on the wrong partie*. For the fact
is that the good men a? a rale are those
who are deterred from arming them
selves, and s i are at the mercy of any
drunken, crazy vagabond who may run
fonl of them. The class who should not
carry arms, as a rule, take the risk of be
ing found out, and carry them all the
