A Ituiiawny.
Yesterday at a quarter to two o'clock
a coneiderftbio amount of excitement was
caused by a runaway. Prom some cause
nr other a horse attached to a barouche
became fright* ned at the corner of Cot
ton Av nuo ami roplaratreot and dashed
down the bill toward Second street with
accelerated movements at every step.
The turn into Second atroct waa success
fully made and a good record down that
street toward the court houso scored. As
the team penned people ran to the win
dows and ories of “hold him" went up
from all sides to the driver, a email dar
key. The horse was turned from Second
street into Cotton Avenue and up that
thoroughfare at its intersection with
Cherry street, where he was reined in
and halted within a block of where bo
had started, after having passed around
four or five blocks. The driver held on
manfully.
Itrclte ins i.eje.
Yesterday morning as Mr. F. A. Shone
man and Mr. Charles Bender, of New
York, were ruling on Sparks street, near
Mercer University, the horao they were
driving bicamo frightened and ran. Mr.
Schouemsn, who was driving, ran him
into Mr. Charles Bartlett's fence, which
faces the street, and Mr. Bender sprang
from ihti buggy in Older to catch the
bridlo and eeouro the animal. In doing
(o, however, his left foot strnck in a small
gully washed by the rain, breaking his
lag below the kneo. The wounded man
was brought into the city and placed in a
room in Mr. Schonemon's apartments on
Cherry street. The fractured limb Was
skillfully cared for by Dr. Mettauer.
While the fracture is a severe one, it is
not noc,siariiy dangerous. Mr. Bender
is known to many people in Macon. Ho
once resided in this city. He is a tailor by
trade, and a brother-in-law of Mr. James
Burns, of Christian’s r stourant.
Macon consumes n considerable quanti
ty of ice every day. Yesterday, in an in
terview wita prominent ioe dealers, we
lesrn that the oity trade cions requires
twenty thousand pounds to supply it.
This is nearly a pound for every man,
woman ami child in the oity without ref
erence to color or previous condition. Ia
a week a hundred aud forty thousand
pound- nro sold to tho city trade alone.

Tto ioe manufactory is now running on
full time, and is unable to keep up with
its order*. Tho lake ice dealers find
it. lively work toe, to keep abreast of
the demand. It does seem that

is at present nbont equally civided be
tween the natural and ths artificial arii-
ole, bo h having their advocates. Pri-

retail. Maoon is well supplied with both
descriptions this so .son and there is no
danger of a I .mine.
Ttie Temperature.
The mast seasonable logic of which we
are oogmziot is the temperature. The
extraordinary tea', and when it will state
have certainly been themes of interest to
all. On Sunday the heat culminnted and
the mercury went on a tonr of exploration

THE SAVANNAH nDBORJ
So Yellow Fever There.
Yesterday ami Sunday the city was Ail
ed vri-h A sating tumors that yellow fever
of» malignant typo had broken out in
Savannah, and that eleven deaths tad
taken place on Saturday, mostly from th»t
eanse.acd seventeen new cases were re
ported for Sunday. We traced the
rumors far enough to sec thst they
i id no foundation, in fact. There
is no doubt of one thing however,
ths bill of mortality in Savannah has
been qnite large, th s published report of
the Morning Newt placing the number of
interments tor the week at twenty-five.
Private telegrams from Savannah yester
day reported that there was no founda
tion whatever for the reports c£ yellow
fever. They probably arose from an ex
traordinarily heavy mortality in the city
a number of sadden deaths, being caused
b r the excessive heat. The local page of
Morning News bears tho appearance of
a regular obituary aheet. No fewer than
eleven deaths, principally well known per-
socs, are chronicled. Seven of these were
from best apoplexy aod congestion,
snperiedneed by the heat. Tnece, with
an occasional drowniDg or so,
was enoogh to stait a report
of almost any eort of an epidemic. We
are persuaded thsro ia no trace of yellow
fever in Savannah, and we trust that the
city may ba spared from its ravages for
years to oome. We have no doubt, how
ever, from what we can learn from pas
sengers on tho inooming trains and oth
er sources, that there is Bomo high types
of billions or malarial fovers in and near
the city. The feeling in JIaeon yester
day was one of feverish anxiety.
Death at Hr. Chai. is. Helen
The friends of Mr. Oharlie B. Heidt
were pained and surprised to learn of his
rather sudden death, which oocurred of
Typhoid fever and Asthma, near Savin-
nab, on Sunday morning at six o’clock.
A few days since be was in Macon in
good health, and one of the gayest of a
gay party which spent the day at a pic
nic at Massey’s Mill on the 4th of July.
He left Macon the next day for his plant
ation, near Wbitesville, on the Central
Bail road on a visit of a few days, expect
ing to return by the 15tb instant. He
was not very well on Tuesday, and quite '
sick on Wednesday. Friday he was bet
ter, and rode over his place, but returned
with a reltpse, and died Sunday moroiog.
Mr. Heidt was about 31 years old. Those
who know him loved him. His uniform
cheerfulness and good spirits was the
general remark of every one, acd it is
said he was never in a bad humor in his
life.
Ho was a Knight Templar, being a
member of St. Outer Oemmaadcry of this
city. His life has been an active one.
When the war broke out he was in the
Military Academy at West Point. Ho
came immediately home and joined the
Southern army, though but sixteen years
Of ago.
He was for many years an engineer
on the Southwestern totilroad, and war
as gallant an engineer ae_ ever held a
hand on a throttle.
He was the son of Bov. Emanuel
Heidt, and brother of Bsv. John W.
Heidt, pastor of Trinity Methodist
Chuccb, of Atlanta.
His remains were carried to Savannah
Sunday afternoon, and buried in Laurel
Grove Cemetery yesterday morning.
Brevities.
Mr. Asa Thompson, a substantial far
mcr, who lives on the Houston road, has
oas of the best crops in this vicinity, not
withstanding the drought. Hia cotton is
excellent and hia fields of oern bear lha
dark green color which indicates a heal
thy crop.
On next Saturday there will be a Sun-
dayieohool pienio in Junss oounty, near
Woodfolk’e, which will be attendod by
several from this city.
Alderman Masterson now bolds tho
reins of the city government in the
absenco of tho Mayor and Mayor pro
tern. He conducts the Mayor’s Court with
dignity aud dispatch, frequently admin
istering justice with wholesome advice as
well us fines.
Several Masonites are turning their
eyes toward Old Point Comfott for a res
pite of a few days from tho heat.
Mr. Trapp, who won the priza at the
Cuthbert for glass ball shcoting, is in
the city for a few days.
The Brown House has raisod its colois
on the flag stall on the tower of the
hotel.
A l.tvetv Cliftsr.
On Saturday night on Fourth street an
altercation took place at the store of H-
. Smith, colored, between Epb. Wilson
aud another darkey, in which Wilson was
hit on the head with zn axo handle, and
seriously if not dangerously wounded.
The other darky fled. Yesterday about
twelve o’clock he was seen sauntering
along Cotton Avenne by officers Wryeand
Matthews..
They gave chase, and, notwithstand
ing the heat, made brisk time toward
VmeviUe. The darkey reached the Vine-
villa branch, however, in advance of the
offie rs, and as he had passed beyond
their jurisdiction, tho pursuit was given
over.
The condition of the wounded negro
was reported as being quite bad last eve
ning.

The Memphis Yellow Fever.
The first excitement over ifco appear
ance of the yellow fever ia Memphis has
greatly subsided ind things are becoming
more calm, though still in a nervous, un
settled state. Strong hopes Ete enter
tained of coatrolling if not entirely eradi
cating the dread pestilence before it takes
possession of the unfortunate city. The
press telegrams this mornirg bear very
encouraging intelligence and de not
bear about them that air cf suppression
which can be eeen when a situation of
iopending danger is sought to be hid from
the public.
From a private letter received in this
city yesterday morning, which is dated
the IS -:b, und which left Memphis about
four o’clock on that day, says that seven
ty-two hours had elapsed since the first
alarm of the fever, and that np to that
time no new cases had been reported.
The press telegrams confirm tho state
ment np to the tima they left Memphis
last evening.
The exodus is described as beggaring
description. People left on every train,
on every boat and on every vehicle by
which they could get away from what
was believed a doomed city. Tho fever
has been, so far, confined to but two fami
lies, four in ono and two in the other, and
is described as of a strictly sporadic
epecies. People are reluming to the city
and business ia beginning to ba generally
resnmed.
Meat.
The fluctuation of the meat market
still continue, while wheat and corn vary
bat little. Yesterday it opened, according
to the quotations of Charie3 Councilman
& Co., reported through Mr. Tinsley >
at 4.25 for clear rib sides, but soon after
fell away to 4 20 for August contracts.
About half past eleven o’clock tho mar.
ket beoarne excited aud dropped ten
points in five minutes. A rally then
took place followed by another decline,
with dosieg quotations 4,12} cents
for August, Thero was a good deal of
anxiety among those who heid contracts.
Tho market is so variable and change
able that the advice of some of thewesi-
ern brokers is to hold off nntil it assumes
some settled slate.
Our quotations are from a firm of Tory
reliable brokers whose credit has with
stood tho recent etorm in tho western
market which has swept the weaker bro
kers swsy.and they are guaranteed by the
