Memphis and the FeTcr.
The cheering reports from Memphis
have restored confidence in the country,
and it is hoped that the fever will not
again make its appearance.
Yesterday, however, as if in contradic
tion to the accepted telegrams of the As
sociated Press, a young man of
this city received a postal card from his
brother, saying that the fever was bad
in Memphis, and that the bodies were
being buried at nigbt, and that
the people were still leaving the city.
Tbs writer was on the eve of leaving
himself for Little Bock.
Csptsin Carnes, however, yesterday
morning received a Utter which left
Memphis on Monday evening, from his
brother, which reported the eltnation
quite changed, the people quietly return
ing, resuming tnsinees, and all sppro-
henaioni fast giving place to more hope
ful feelings. No new cases bad been dis
covered up to the time of his letter.
We era inclined to believe the card re
ceived last evening is designed to be a
little sensational.

There is a good d< al of complaint from
tho residents in tho portion of tho city
nearest the river, of boys who persistent
