psltce Courr.
There was quite a lively police court
yesterday morning. A fight which oc
curred yesterday morning on Third street,
near the corner of Cnerry, was investi
gated, and thrso of tbs parties were fined
15 00 each.
Tbe Lv.imoro disturhanoo waa investi
gated, and Lucinda Bnrke, colored, who
throw bricks a; Ben Lttimore, was fined
$2 60, and Lalimore’s wife was also fined
15 00 for her share in the disturbance.
The finis yesterday aggregated $27.
Alderman Masteraon opened Ibo court,
and Mayor pro Urn. Corput closed tbe
services.
mimnes to one
o’clock the alirm of fire waa ronnleJ
from tbe compo ling rooms of this paper,
a'.d ellboagb Riven with vigor and earn-
e tntfs and echoed from the street, th*
alarm of the bells was net sounded for
fifteen minutes after.
The fire was discovered to be in tbe
rear of Sen all’s shoe store, on Cherry
street, and the a mall frame building us
ed as a repair shop was burning in a live
ly manner at the back end. Daring
tue delay between the alarm and the
ringing of the bells the film a made rap
id progress, and the hot, black emcke
waa oezing in heavy drift through all
the crooks and crevices of the building,
and tbe icsidioas flimes were steadily
creeping up tbe wall on to the
roof and into the interior of tbe house.
When the engine! arrived the heat of the
flimes had fired tbe casements of the
windows of Hunt, Bankin A Limar, and
eiUnded to the roof. The engintseoon
got to work and it seemed as though tbe
flames were all under control. Toe fire
bad, however, eaten through the shingles
into tbe store and the entire roof waa aeon
ablaze from end to end.
The situation then assumed a moat
threatening aspect. Tne flimes swept
across from roof to roof until the whole
covering of Schall’s shoe store, Hunt
Bankin A Limar’s entire wholesale store,
and C. IL Bogers A Co’s wholesale gro
cery establishment were on fire.
As viewed from the third story of the
Tsliobapk building it seemed n sen of
fire, the ridges and valleys of the roofs
adding to tho deception, and giving the
appearanca of waves of brilliant water
bursting into orests of lurid red and oaps
of leaden foam.
The entire roofing of the Hook was of
shingles with no dead walls on the inte
rior of the building, and the firing tlo-
ment spread with amazing rapidity. All
of the engines were at work bat it was
apparent tnat the best that con’d be done
was to save the surrounding buildings.
These three stores ere total losses, and
the whole loss to ths city will not bs l*ss
than one bnndred thousand dollars. Of
tbis amount there is probably an insnr-
anoe of sixty thoaiand. Toe origin of
the fire was ovidently the work of an in
condiary, as ths wooden shop whioh was
first fired was burning at the back ond
whero there was no postibilii of its csto’a
ing from any accidental cause.
Busy bauds went to work saving what
could bs removed, but not bait of the
stocks were recovered except from
Schall’s.
Hunt, Bankin A Lamar think they will
scarcely save $3,000 in a decent condi
tion. They did not save half of the stock
on the first fi jor and nothing from the

Atlanta, Jnly 17.
There was coosi erabls excitemsat in
the Oapital to-day In certain circles over
the discovery of a fraud abont to he pei-
petrated upon the State. The develop
ment earns with great suddenness npon
the majority cf the Legislators and citi
zens generally. The report of tbe W ild
Land Committee was trad with great in
terest by the people generally, as'exhibit
ing a systematically arranged proceeding
in regard to.ths wildj lands of tho 'State,
in the words of the report not only with
out their sanction and against Isw.
Subsequent to tbe report of the Wild
Land Committee, Comptroller General
Goldsmitn prepared a paper exonerating
himsslf and endeavored to get the Com
mittee to sign it. Meiars. Candler, of
Hill, and Mannd, of Talbot, did so. The
cignatnre of tbe other members wa3 de
sired. H. P. Wright, of Atlanta, ap
proached Bepresentstive Davis, of
Baker (the offer by him being re
fused), with the proposition to pay him
two hundred and fifty dollars and a suit
of clothes for his signature. Mr. D iv.e
indignantly lefused tbe proposition.
Wtiekt also approached Strickland, of
Clinch, with a similar proposal, offering
100 dollars for bis signature to tbe said
piper, which was also rejeotfd. Ths com
mittee have been in investigation of tbe
matter, and Wright admitted the truth of
Davis’ statement before the committee.
The committee is preparing a manifesto
to ba read to-morrow in both Houses.
Comptroller Goldsmith is not connected
directly end parsonally with the proposi
tion of bribery, but Mr. Davis says the
paper Goldsmith wanted to have signed
md the p tp:r Wright approao bed him
with ere identica 1 .
The developments, of courae, will be
profound sensation, and still more light
will be rbrown on the wild land matters
of the State. The manifesto ia looked
for with keen interest by all.

A Brass Band iCegulalcd.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger. Should
you pass through the ancient borough
oolled Clinton and stop to rest a night in
any of its silent balls, you weald be apt
to ' hear during tbe still waiohes of the
night a bngle-blast and then a bray
trumpets calling, not “spirits from the
vasty deep,” but the cornet band of that
old hiatona town to wako the lonely
echoes that for generations have been
in and around tbe almost “deserted vil
lag .” To bear them wonld not make yen
txolaim, this sounds like “good news
from a far country.”
Not many moans ago tbis band of hard
blowers saw fi: to qniet the nsrves of the
aged people that still Unger in their mids
and soothe the ories of the little ones
■hat lie around loose in their neighbors
homes, with a serenade.
With oommendable zeal and energy,
and marching quickly bat proudly to tne
"spirit stirring drum,” they halted
front of the dour of a kind-hearted gen
ilsman, and, at a given signal by tuetr
Christian teacher, away they wout npon
a wave cf sound that flowed iu through
tho key holes nnd down tho balls, round
tbe arches and doorways iu the chamber,
aud out sgsm and then mounted upon
the wings of the heated air and started for
(bo skies, and way in the distance the
last notes of the shrill lead horn melted
away into a faint eobo. Aud as tne
muttering tones of their alto and
base waned ond softened one was
reminded, not exactly of tho meian-
oboly^notes ofa “dying swan.” With tbo
hospitality that characterized tho citi
zens of this once goodly village in its
better days, and wnich, I am proud to
siy, is still found with the few that re
main, tbe host threw open his doors and
invited bis musical friends to come in
and portaka of his good cheer.
The kind of a bottle that old “Rosin
the Bean” wished his friends to drink
from—when performing the last rites
over his remains—was bought
forth, and its contents, blackberry
cordial, soon disappeared Clown their
thirsty throats, for all nine of them
drank, not calling for "sugar in their'n."
Soon diuoovering that his friends were
still a little dry, and wanted another
horn, and wishing to get an addition-:!
installment of their splendid mnsic, tbe
host returned to bis secretary, nnd withont
stopping to look carefully at tbe label,
handed another bottle to tbe member
that rattled tbe valves of the B flat
He drank a deep potation and paused
the bottle to bis neighbor. Aboa
tbis time B fiat returned, not ex
actly his thanks, bat what ha htd
drank ro tbe hurriedly sought ground,
and exclaimed: "I'm poisoned!" Counter-
nation so z ;d upon the host and his mn9i
cal guests. Tue Band turned psio in the
f»ee. Quickly and excitedly tba fatal
bottle waa ex-m:oed f and it was discov
ered that tb8 “do«u of pizea” was noth
ing more than “Bradfiela’a Femaio Reg
ulator.” Tnis discovery quieted their
nerves, but not theiij digestions. For
fear of fatal efftois B flit nnd ethers
smoked and walked until the “weo rW
bonra.”
No ill effects remained, bnt they were
so well regulated by that little episode
that they scan well and long all proffered
bottles on serenading nights.
