Decaying Southern Ports.
New York Commercial Bulletin. I
One of the most uninviting phenome-
na of tho times is the apparent decay of
wna: were ouoa prosperous nod progres
siva commercial ports of the 8ontb. Mo
bile, Savannah »nn Charleston, though
mill exhibiting a oommendabla degree of
mercantile enterprise, have not been able
to regain the imi'ortanee wh-.o'a attached
to them as shipping and distributing
points before tne civil war, owina
to a variety of causes, not the least ot
which is the gradui diversion across the
country to the Northern ports of much
of the interior commerce which was for
merly drawn in that direction. Products
seek a market through tontes that afford
the quickset and cheapest transportation.
Tnis diversion has been brought about
by the multiplication of railroad facilities
that have gradually turned away the
channels of trade from their former ob
jective point* on the South Atlantic and
the Gulf of M-xico to shipping ports fur-
:her north. Norfolk is at present the out
let for much of the cotton than in former
years went to Mobilt; and as for New
Orleans, notwitnatandiog tne great
tninos that w.-re expected from the im
provement of Mississippi navigation, by
leans ot the Eids jetties, it seems to be
nkmg into a no;w?iesj dry rot. Instead
of advancing, it is steadily going astern,
