As waa atated yesterday, the fire orig
in'll, d in tho rear of Schall’s shoe store,
the firat alarm being given by Mr. Wil
lie Brady, of the composing room of this
paper. Tho cry of fire waa taken np
and echoed for fully fifteen minute* be
fore the sound of a bell BtTe a general
call. The fire engines then turned out
with good epeed, and soon several
streams were falling on the small wood
en building which waa first on fire. No
damage was apprehended. The flames
were soon entirely under control. The
fire bad, however, crossed an intervening
apace of eomo twenty feet, to the
building occupied by Messrs.
Hunt, Rankin, & Lunar, and,
as it was covered with abingler,
made considerable progreta in its work*
A few moments of well directed playing
from the engines, however, sufficed to
put out every vestige of the flames, and
many who had been lookers on returned
home. It seems, however, that tho back
portion of the establishment has been
recently built and that portion waa cov
ered with a tin roof. Just at the placs
where the tin roofing joined the shingles
the flames, burning their way through
their outer covering, hid themselves
under the tin. The black smoke
soon rolling ont in a heavy volume from
every appertnre told the practical fire
men tho story of coming danger. Oae or
two of the companies carried their pipes
into the second story and began a most
vigorous battle with the flames. The
blending smoke increased until the
firemen wero reluctantly forced to fall
back with their lines of hose to tho open
air. Among the rafters and timbers of
the roof the fire spread rapidly and burst
ing through, again took possession of tho
outside. Sparks blew in every direction
from tbo roof of the first establishment
to the other adjoining on either side and
tha whole was in a few moments one
molten Bheet of flame. They like eomo
voracions monster set to dcvonriDg the
exterior of tho several establishments.
The work was that of bnt a few ammonia.
The flames swept everything before
them. Tne bnilding had a uniform float
bat was in reality three separate and dis
tinct stores. Unfortunately, however,
there were no dead walls above tho first
floor and only lathe and plaster separa
ted one division from the other.
These wero simply swept away.
Tho work of saving what stock and ef
fects possible commenced, but so rapid
was the march of the monarch of de
struction that nothing in the second
story of Hunt, R inkin Si Lamar’s store
was saved, and ond or two of the offices
were not even opened. The costly
stock of the drag house was rudely pitch
ed into the street.
Tho doors of Messrs. C. H. Rogers &
Co., wero opened, and the magnificent
stock of heavy and staple goods rushed
out as rapidly ns possible.
In their turn then the firemen were
doing all in their power to suppress tho
flames. Chief Hendrix was everywhere
giving directions, and all five of the
streams wero pouring into the fire.
The wind blew steadily from tho north
west, thereby lessening the danger to
buildings on either side. Tho heat,
however, at length fired tho bakery
house of Mr. L. Merkel, across a ten foot
alley aid the flames began to make rapid
headway when the wall of the store of
Rogers Si Co., gave way, falling outward
ly striking upon the baking shops Allud
ed to, razed them to the earth and saved
tho establishment from farther danger
m this direction. Several of tha firemen
escaped this falling wall by the merest
good fortune.
The danger for Merkels’, however,
was not over, and bat for the most vigor-
ouswork tho whole establishment would
bare beon burned, followed in turn by
other buildings nntil tho culmlnslion of
the conflagration would have been readi
ed in the destruction of Ralston Hall. A
line of hose was inn to the top of the
bnildibg and a stream of water kept
playing on tho parapet and the rooting.
So intonse was the heat that only with
the protection of wet blankets could the
gallant firemen face tho terrible heat.
Mr. E. Isaacs, one of Maoon’s most gal
lant firemen, stood with others bravely at
this past of peril and did noblo service.
The danger was not altogether on this
side. A slight shifting of tho breezo
brought the heat against the handsome
brick buildings on the north of the burn
ing block. The casements were fired, and
but for a parapet wall and a tin roof, it
also would have been laid in ashes. Tha
situation at one time was thrilling, and it
seemed as though the entire sidd of the
block from Second to Third street would
be swept away. Tbo -rater at this time
gave out and the city was left to the
mercy of the flames. The wind, however,
again shifted, blowing across Cherry
street. An old-fa-hicncd line for passing
buckets was atranged and several gentle
men by this means extinguished the fire
in the building occupied by Walker A
Co. About 4 o’clock in the morning the
fire was order control and confined to the
three stores mentioned above. They
horned to the ground and last evening,
scarcely any of the walla remained stand-
og and an intense heat are slowly rolling
away smoke from the debris of brick, and
mortar were all that remained to tell the
tory.
The firemen worked with unremitting
gailactry and heroism. No. 1 toot wa
ter at her own cistern, No. 2 at tho :nter-
secticn of Cotton Avecne and Cherry
Street, No. 3 at the Mulberry Street cis
tern, No. -1 at the “City B ink’" cistern,
and No. 5, first at the Mulberry SireC
cistern and afterward at the cistern on
Second Street, near Wall Street, and wa-
afterw&rd sent to P.um Street. Several

Nearly every ladder of Hock sni Ladder
was put into active use. The Depart
ment worked with more enthusiasm an.:
harmony than it has in a long while, acd

gallantry and individual heroism of our
liremeu.
