Wo invite attention to the large stock of
choice flour and ham*, offered for salo in
another colomo, by this enterprising
firm. Their goodi are of the boat quali

no end to them. If gentlemanly proprie

ought to ensure patronage, then this
house will not lack for customers.
They will be beard from again in a few

Second Street.
No drive In tho State can surpass Seo-
ond street in its preset t condition. Tho
road is far better than an ordinary shell
road. Tbo etreot is bnilt on the Telford
principle crowned in the centre and slo
ping off in ft gentlo curve to eaoh side,
insuring drainage and keeping the road
way freo from holea and mnd. The
bed is well settled, ns smooth almost as
a (able. The dust, which is less on this
street than almost any other, is a little
disigrecable at prevent.
One thing which would add not only to
tho appearacoo of tho drive but alio to
its pleasure would ba the removal of the
old dilapidated and unused pump at tho
intersection of Oik and Second street.

which ho bad shot in tbo bongbs of an
oak near Cole’s oi l field, some three miles
from tho city. The animal was spotted
like a Bejg.il tiger, and only differed in
sire from that savage beast. It weighed
seventeen and a half pounds, and in life
must hove boon exoeediogly active and
dangerous. It was large enough to cap
ture a sheep or young calf, and would
have proved an ugly customer toe grown
min unprovided with tho mean* of de

continue to bo found so near the crowded
haunts of man.

Barbecue at Kilpatrick’s Spring.
It shoaldbe remembered that the big

there wilt be barbecued meats also, and a

platform has been enlarged to twioe its
former extent, and we learn that many
ladies and gentlemen have announced
their intention to be present. We ao-

Water Marks Facts and Humors.
Editor* Telegraph and Messenger. The
oommlttee appointed by tne meeliug of
citizens had many “ups and downs,"
with many more ‘’downs” than “ups,”
during their recent canvas for subscrip
tions to a Water Works company. The
four largest real estate owners in the
city declined to subscribe a cent, while a
number of oar enterprising young men,
working on email salaries, owning not a
cent of real estate, subscribed liberally.
They had public spirits and great hearts
and loved Msoorr. Mr. Welter C. Hodg
kins ot the firm of Hodgkins & Haigb,
New York, and formerly a citizen of Ma
con, wrote one ot the committee as fol
lows :
I am greatly pleased at the project to
bnlld water works in Mjood. There is
no greater bl ss.ng for any city than to
,-.tj plenty of water. Yon esn pnt me
down for 5500, and if yon agree with me,
and think tnat it is necessary to make ira
success, you can call on me for $500
more.” What a ountrast are these nuble
words to truss whica the carnalities re-
eeived from so many of Macon’s wealth
iest residents! One sabterfuge nsed to
avoid subscribing was to say they wonld
give to a canal, but cot to a water works
company. They didn’t 6eem to know
that they would be no nearer having wa
ter works even if they had a canal dug.
Tney are entirely separate and distinct
enterprises. A canal would ca=: not lea-,
than calf a million dollars, whilo water
works esn be constructed for one hnDdred
thousand dollar;.
The following letter of resignation,
from ons of the discouraged committee,
wa9 rtf rived and read st the las: meeting
of that o .oy, and was appreciated for its
mitigled irony, sarcasm, hnmirand sober
troth.
It is well worth publication, and we in
vito sitenton it:
Macox, Ga., July 7tb, 1879.
Gentlemen:—I beg to be relieved rrom
farther service with the “Water Works
Committee.” The fact of tho busioe s is,
there are so many others knowing bettor
how to build these works ihaa we do, we
oughtsome of us to resign and let them do
it. Besides.I think the undertaking is a\
together too insignificant. If you will
go into something big. a cant!, or some-
thingof that kind, at a cost of $230,000
or 5500,000, yon will find plenty to hrlp
you. It is hardly worth while bothering
people to death in dribblets. There is
ro bing small abont our capitalists.
In severing my connec'. on with yon,
gentlemen, I am constrained to offer one
suggestion: In the event you should go
into tnis canal business, get the large (?)
property holders of Macon (open wre-m
you have waited to enlist ::., -r coop
eration in the smaller enterprise), and
together push the whole thing through,
with as little delay as possible.
I am, gentlemen, very respectfully.
