Tho Columbua "Onn Club" advertises
for G.OGO' plgecna to be abot to death
and makes a pathetic appeal in behalf of
the “oomiort and health of the bird*.'
What a precious travtstie upon human-

further destruction of these feathered
innocents.

We are sure that the whole community
will be glad t» learn that this popular
hotel has been leased to its former cljvr.
proprietor, Mr. B. Dub, who will again
cater to the wants of his numerous pat
rons find friends. We learn that the
building is to receive many needed repairs
and the carpenters will bagin the work
of reconstruction at once.
Centrally aitnated, and well arranged
for families and permanent boarders,
the “Lanier House," under the continued
direction of its former genial proprietor
must ever be one of the most popular
resorts of Macoc.

We invito attention to the following
communication from a highly respectable
B.snrce, which ought to receive attention
from tbo proper authorities :
Wo are constrained to cull the nt
tention of the pump contractor to their
gcneial condition. They ere. seldom in
serviceable condition, particularly those
on Plom, between First and Second
Btroets, First and Pine streets, Oak and
Second streets.
The attention of the police is also coll
cd to tho “small boys" that usually play
wi<h the pomps and often injure and
render Ihcm useless. It is to be hoped
that the proper authorities will take this
matter in hand and not allow it to remain
as heretofore. Plain Jack.

Mr. Boberts, tbo wealthy proprietor of
the burnt district in the lato disastrous
fire, has concluded a eentract with com

of a three-elery brick building, longer and
larger than tho former edifice, which
will bo reidy for occupaiioa by the fir.-t

Charles Kogeis A Co., who prefer to re
turn to the-ir old stand.
Althcu^h the ruics are still emoting

Water Woskn.
We are glad to state for the honor and
salvation of Macon that the question
“shall the city be supplied with water,
his not been consigned to the “tomb of
the Cspnlete,” either by the inrid flame;
which licked np every available drop of
water within their reach and all that
could be brought from afar, or the snbse
quest avalanche of rain which deec.nd-
ed from the clouds. Oa the contrary the
smoking remains of that stately block
b-neath which money to the value
of several fortunes has been buried, still
appeal tinmptt-tongued to the good
bense and Riund judgment of onr people
In behalf of the movement which has
beeD vamly sought to be inaugurated
famish a plentiful and constant supply
of water for the eitizjns of our beantifnl
city.
As stated above, however, the maite r
has by no means been decided. There is
a settled determination on the part of
some of the beet and most eolid
citizens of Macon to spare
pains or efforts until measures
have been provided for the successful
encounter of the fire king even when he
erects bis crimson crest as of late, and
seeks to lay the whole city in ashes.
Unless this is done, of wbat avail the
magnificent fire organization in our midst
with their splendid array of steamers, so.
gallantly manned and served? It is like
famishing a park of artillery withont
supplying it with shot and shell to play
-upon the enemy—or planting a pomp
with no well beneath to test its suotion—
or organizing a choir withont sn organ
or striving to make brick without straw,
The thing is impossible.
Granted that wo need a canal whose
banks eball bristle with costly factories
acd resoundito the hum of machinery.
But the greater should cover the lesser.
We should have first acd foremost the
means of protecting and conserving the
property already in existence, which has
been obtained at such an outlay
of toil and personal sacrifice. When
that has been accomplished here, and
tax payers can sleep soundly at night,
withont the fetr of disastrous oonflagra-
lions, knowing that the guardians of the
city have the means at hand to quench the
incendiary’s torch, then will the people,
with a will, units to dig that canal which
will, (provided the rich Yankees under-
take the job,) transform onr fair city in
to another Lowell. At present let
'make haste slowly," and first secure
wbat we have, before reaohing forth af
ter unknown and mayhap n'.opian schemes
of fntnro aggrandisement.
