Two Sporadic Casea—Nw Danger cfa
Spread of tbs Disease.
Some little, oud we regard it uncc-cej-
sirv, anxiety was caused in the city by
report that there was yellow fever ia
Opelika, Alabama. Taere hare been bn:
two cases in that place., and both of theee
wire imported from Memphis.
From tbo Coluuibns Enquirer-Sun of
yt-t-rday, we gather tbe following in re
gard to the esses. The lady in question
iriugeedin Opelika last year from Mem
phis. The faeta contained in tbe follow,
tag were confirmed by parties who arriv
ed on the evening train from Colambtm
yesterday. It was reported hy them that
me l.irt c.se was dying when the train
left Opelika.
Tho caoes of yellow fever were from
Memphis. On Friday Mrs. Fitchet and
..'ill! arrived in Opelika from M- mphis,
Tennessee. Mrs. F. is a daughter of
Mrs. Bone, of Opelika, and stopped with
her. Both mother and child were taken
sick soon after arriving. Oa yesterday
the attending physicians, Dee. Barnett
and Emory, pronounced the disease to
be yellow fever, the patients having tbe
black vomit. This created considerable
commotion, and some of the citizi-ns left
immediately. Quiet was re.tor. d by an
announcement of tho physicians that
there was no danger of the disease
spreading.
Tho child died yesterday morning and
was interred immediately.
The mother, it was thought, could not
live.
Mr. F.tchet, who is in Memphis, was
telegraphed for as soon ss the disease was
di-covered to bo yellow fever.
Opelika is Bituated in a health; looali-
tp. is high and dry, and no fear of an ep
idemic is felt by any. The oity is ia a
cleanly condition, end the physicians all
ogreo that there is no need of apprehen
sion of a spread of tbe disease.
Yccterduy soon aftor the news of the
two easts Hashed over the wires, a tele
gram was received from Montgomery,
Alabama, Buying that city would quaran
tine against Opelika. Several passengers
who had purchased tickets to that point
had their money refnuded by the agent.

it cosy to believe ill of him. Ho was in
this city about two months since.
Opelika, Alabama, has been the scene
of mtonso excitement for the past two

of New Orleans, and Mr. J. A. Bsid and

The moat reliable information is that
the Messrs. Beid entered Mrs. Sledge’

Tho pistol need by Mr. Grasty was one

time.
It is stated the attach of Messrs. Beid

that a lease for 99 years bo signed by the

which eeern to b3 iu dispute. We find
it is reported by onr engineer that said

Oa motion to adopt tho report Alder
man Flanders moved to amend the re
port by adding to the report that Mr
Crutchfield be required to pay into tbe
city tre.snry $100.00 for the privilege of
said eneroschment. The motion to
amend was lost. A motion to adopt tbo
report as read waa made, when Alderman

the following result: Ayes—Aldermen

17th to be: Whites, 27; Colored, G5; To
tal, 92. Total fines collected, $4,950;
Expenses, $1,SG0; Net amount, $30.90.
Alderman Cannon introduced the fol
lowing resolution which was adopted:
lr/icrcos. The bill for the relief of the
city of Macon has met with some oppo-
frion on account of an unimportant sec
tion, to-wit: That section which pro-
vid- s for the filling of vacancies in the
Board of Commissioners by the Mayor
and Conncil. Therefore be it
Kaolrcd, That the Council will, in the
.utcre.1 of harmony, recommend and re
quest our representatives in the Legisla
ture to so change or amend said bill that
the members of the Board of Commis
sioners shall hereafter elect and fill all
vacancies which may occur in said Board,
thereby miking the Board self-perpetu
ating.
Ecsolve l, T-iat the peculiar limitation
which is cow sought to be placed upon
the license and business tax of tbe city
by legislative enactment is, in the opin
ion of this Council, unprecedented, and
must prove a most awkward and unbusi-
ntss-like remedy for the excesses com
plained of, resuliing only in continued
fature trouble and embarrassments. Yet,
for the purposes of quieting all antago
nisms, and removing, as far as possible,
.ii opposition to tbe more important
ures of thebi'l, we will recommend
id req ust onr representatives to add
such a sec ion to tbe bill as will limit tbe
icense and business tax hereafter to be
o leered from the merchants and busi
ness men of Mac onto $15,000 per annum.
Alderman Corput asked to be and was
excused from voting upon the above
resolution.
Oa motion the Clerk was instructed to
f-rward a copy of the foregoing resolu
tion to each of our representatives in the
Legislature.
Ald-rman Hendrix moved that here
after all promiscuous burials in the old
cemetery be discontinued. Carried.
Oa motion Council adjourned to Tues
day next at 8:30 o’clock.
