Mumcipn! Finances.
There was nothing naw in tho situation
in regard to tho perfecting of tho pond
ing bill in tho Legislature having rofer-
onoo to refunding tho oily’s bonded debt.
Both parties seemed satisfied with what
had I won done, nod aro quietly wailing
tho paaaaga of the measure. Both ole,
ments havo main concessions, and have
displayed a disposition to be reasonable,
and no point in the bill appears to sort
onsly antagonize either patty. We hope
all will meet on a common ground and
work together for tho good of Macon.
Adjusted.
Since tho recent flro some very lively
work haa b.-on going on among the insnr
ance agents and adjusters. They have
with commendable energy boon wrung
ing tho various looses. On tho property
insured and destroyed by the firo Captain
W.W. Carnos had fifteen policies of in
surance, representing $36,950. Yester
day at noon the last one had been satis
factorily adjusted. This ia one of the
promptest pieces of insurance work, ea
pccially when the largo number of policies
is considered, that has como under obser
vation in some time.
Spotted Meat.
Thero Is some complaint against par.
tier bringing into the city for nalu meat
in a spoilt condition. Yesterday a wagon
from the oonntry was discovered with
meat in a tainted state, which wn* being
freely offered on the slreete. Tho atten
tion of several of the Board of Health
was called to it, and they promptly took
steps for its removal from tho oity, go
ing so far as to see that the owner was
escorted by a guard from tho city.
Wo hops parlies vending what pnrpor
to be fresh meat about the streets will
bear in mind that the guardians of the
city are now looking aftor those matters,
and by to doing they will avoid iuoanvon
lenou to themselves. •

Toe anaonooemeut of the death of Mr.

We aro in receipt of a catatognoof this
very superior Institution for the present
scholastic year. The catalogue shows
that there were one hundred and twen
ty-four matriculates in the institution
during the scholastio year which has just
ended. Of this number twenty-three grad
nated at tho late commencement. In the
oollcge during tho past year there were
thirteen ycuag men studying for the
ministry.
The course of study laid down in the
catalogue shows that no branch of a lib
eral education is neglected but tho pre
scribed curriculum is complete and admi
rably adapted to meet all requirements.
The catnlogne indicates a general pros
porous condition for the institution and
its friends look forward to the approach,
ing year with feelings of pleasure and
encouragement. The next term begins
on October first.

Barbtcue at Kilpatrick »P rlD »'-
Yesterday a large number of Maromtes,
to response totbe invitation from the
good men of Jones connty, attended the
picnic and barbecne at the famous Kil
patrick Springs. A large crowd of Jones
county’s most substantial citizens were
present. Nor were these all. From
many a rural home embowered in
its surroundings of forest trees, the
lasses of the county came, and town and
coantry were soon losing each other in
the dance which followed.
The dancing platforms had been en
larged, and more than triple the capacity
for the accommodation of dancers ob
tained. A colored band from tho city
gave excellent music. About 12:30 o'clock
dinner was announced and iu companies
abont the grounds, one of those good
old-fashioned dinners was enjoyed, for
which the place is noted. Tne bill of
fare was quite varied. Wo must ac

Mrs. J. A- Nelson, of Macon, and

for a sumptuous repast, no lew than
twenty-five or thirty others being placed
under similar obligations.
After dinner jnat as the dancing was
about to be recommenced a rain came up
and descended on the picnickers in tor
rents. Many fled to the carriages; others
mounted the hills to a number of small
houses on their summits; others crouch
ed utder umbrellas, under the mnsioians’
stand and against the sheltered sides of
tho forest trees, while a few who could
obtain no protection took tho rein in the

Danting was resumed after the shower,
and though many were very wet the
dizzy mazes were threaded with as much
zest and enjoyment as before.
Among the incidents should bs men
tioned that of a yonng man from
Bibb connty who had gazed too
often upon the f, rj6 which potisheth
and who stnmbled headforemost into the
deep spring, and was immersed head,

prompt and vigorous efforts of the by

State Horticultural Society.
On tho 29th instant the State Horti
cultural Society will commence its fourth
annual seseion In our city. The meetings
will bo held at Masonic Hall as usual
and will, ns they have been in tho past, be
of a great degree of interest. The society
ia composed of tho very first horticultur
ists in the State, and their meetings are
of immense valne to sll frnit growers
and raisers in tho State. The annual
exhibitions servo to show the vast re
sources of onr State and give an impetus
to frnit cnltnro throughout the whole
commonwealth.
This year the fruit crops havo not been
so abundant ns for the past three, and
the exhibition is hardly expected to bo
as elegant aa on the former occasions.
Some fine frnit, especially of tho late va.
rietiss, is to bs found in this and other
sections of the State, and when brought
together, will make a very creditable
display. It is very important for the
■nocess of the exhibition, this year, that
nil who have anything that will add to
the exhibition in any way, should bring
it promptly forward.
All the horticultnralista and frnit
growers and progressive agriculturalists
are invited to attend, and bring all
articles that will do for an exhibition
with them. A particular invitation
is extended to the ladies to con
tribute to tho display any Georgia
grown fruits, flowers or vegetables they
may deem worthy.
Tho Sontbern Express Company, with
its aoenttomed liberality, will transport
all paokages free of charge, intended for
the exhibition. They ahonld be address
edtoH. J. Peter, Treasurer, Maoon, and
the namo of tho sender plainly mucked
on tho package, and shipment mado in
time for tho package to reaoh Macon on
Monday evening the 28:h instant.
The raiiioads of the State have also
extended oonrteaies to the members of
the Sooioiy, and sll or them, except the
Western and Atlantio and Georgia roads,
will pass delegates et one fare going and
retaining .from the meeting. These
roads will sell tickets at three cents per
mile each way.
Important Cases.
Mr. A. B. Bow, Clerk of the Superior
Court, is very busy just now preparing
the record of a number of cases for the
Supreme Court, which have been recently
tried and have been appealed from the
Superior Court to the higher tribunal.
Among them may be mentioned the ex
ecutors of W. M. Davis against the Ma
sonic Mutual Insurance Company; Tbos-
J. Mitchell against the Central B»iVro*d;
li. T. Wilson A Co, a-ainst T. J. Cham
pion; H. and F. Blacdy against Sanlsbny,
Rapes* A Co.; F. E. Block against Alex.
Lawhon, H. J. Peter, garnishee, and
Elizabeth Ware against D. D. Craig and
Geo. F. Cherry, Sheriff. These cases
involve amounts which aggregate about
thirty thousand dollars.
The W.undt* Ban.
Mr. Higginston, the yonng man who
was wounded by the accidental discharge
of his gun on the place of Mr. R. E.
Park, lies in a critical condition, and bia
attending physician say It will bo at
least five days before it can be deter
mined what the result of his injuries
will be. Tbo charge from the gun en
tered his left .thigh and ranged upward,
entering the lower portion of his abdo
men, and making a very dangerona
wound. He was endeavoring to take his

His symptoms at last acoonnts were fa

Wo should regret very much, however,

of Georgia can afford to let him go:
