nutphurlc Add a, an Encrzrzer The
liven Mule in the souih—Four
Men FalofuiiT Burned.
Yesterday aftrrnocn, in tbe rear of the
store cf Messrs Hunt, Bitkin & Linar,
occurred a singular accident, which for
tbe time created considerable excitement.
After the late fire the firm tock advan
tage of the kindness of a number of
friends and stored their rescued goods
temporarily with them, and since they
have been having them kanlcd to
their new stand. Yesterday tfceir dray,
loaded with carboys of sulphuric acid,
was being nnloaded. As four men were
engaged in the work one Urge carboy
fell frem their grasp to the ground and
was shattered into ten thousand pieces.
The acid, of coorae, flew in every direc
tion, qoite a quantity tailing on tho fett
of those who were osaistingdn the unload
ing of the dray.
As tho spray from tbe fregmentary
carboy reached tbe mule, and the acid
“took hold,’’there was on instantaneous
forward movement on the part of that
mate, by a large majority. A moment
before ho was standing with his head
dowD, evidently thinking, with a twitch
ing movement about the lips, as if be
was reciting tbe “Water Mil), or soma
oiber meditative poem, or perhaps recsli-
iog eomo early lesson. Ho wss wrapped in
thought. The moment after he was
off, as if bo had suddenly received
possessory warrant lo serve on a party
who was about to leave the city. There
were just four other caxboys on tho dray
In about ten steps one of tho remaining
ones fell off to the right and.was smash'
ed and a volume of smoke made a monu
ment over its remains. About ten feet
farther another huge bottle went over
board and its contents sprinkled a band-
some cream colored horse belonging
Colonel Limar, and hs immediately set
up a Cetcmoygo war dance. The mule
then organized a regular boom and went
out cf ihe back gate into tho alley in
manner which would havj made a streak
of lightning tarn green with envy.
At the g»to an uuorginizsd darkey,
who happened t i be wandering around,
oimo near coming in oontaot with the
regularly organized boom, but concluded
to avoid the oolliaion—if possible.
It was neck and neck, traveling nnder
blanket oovor for a few yards, bnt Africa
triumphed; time not reoorded. Tbe mule
deposited for safe keeping the remaining
carboys at appropriate distances along
tbe route, bnt kept as steadily forward ss
it tbe onrtiin had fallen on the first sob
and be wa3 going oat to see a man. The
oirner of the intersecting alley was turn
ed toward J. W. Bnrko St Co.’s, and
Mr. Henry Limar, Jr., narrowly es
capcd impalement by one of tbe shafts.
An invalid gray horse was struck in
transitu and his solicitous owner and his
dray badly demoralized. The horse has
not been known io engage in anything
animated in fifteen years, bnt be too
dished off in gallant style, broke a shaft
and thereby his owner, and sighed for
moro worlds to conquer.
Jast in front of Burke St Co.’s side
door tho excited mule succeeded in tarn
iog the now smoking dray completely
over and on top of himself and com
menced strumming tho emigrant’s la
ment on the dray with bis business feet.
When tbe dust and smoke from ths
acid had cleared away a mild-eyed mute
was extracted from tbe debris and led
sway for repairs. His reputation was
mode, however. Ho wsa tho live t
mole in the South, and will soon draw
dray fn Atlanta, perhaps.
In Iho back yard things were quite live
ly. The acid eat away everything
came in contaat with. The
shoes and clothing of those on whom
it fell vanished wherever touched.
Mr. Willie B.Giimer.who was euperin
tending the nnloading, was badly burned
on bis feet and ankles. Mr. J. D. Wit
liams, another oterk, bid bis entire suit
ruined, and several drops reached the cu
tiole beneath. Wash Thormond, tbe
colored drayman, was more badly barns d
than any, the soid reaching nearly to his
knees, Mistering tho flash wherever it
touched. Charles Dawson, the oolored
porter was severely burned on bis feet
a new pair of slippers being eaten away
by tie cirrosivo acid. Ths loss in the
acid ie comparatively slight; fifty dol
lars will cover it. Remedies of sweet
oil and eoda were immediately applied
aad partial relief obtained for tha eus-
ferera.
The principal regret of Messrs. Hast
Rankin St Limar, is that their employes
should be subjected to so much pains and
inconvenience.
Sulphuric acid is brought out in what are
termed carboys, huge glass bottles, hold'
ing seven or eight gallons each, and
their contents srs generally veiy powsr-
ful.
The affair created considerable excite-
meet, and a good many gathered around
to see the cime and effect of the aeci.
dent.
We are glad to note that the firm ia in
•cch a pioc-crcus condition, aid bepr
that this extension cf their business
will be fully m»- by a generous patron
age. They are thorougf»>o:ng, reliable

Slight Explosion st the Ictworlts—
Two pair of Exes Injured.
At the Icewcrks a small explosion oc
curred yesterday, which for a short time
started a report in the city that a serious
accident had happened at the works. It
seems that in one of the supply pipes be
tween the retort in which is compressed
the ammonia water and gas, and the ice
box a elight leak had been debated, and
Mr. Walter T. JohnsoD, the proprietor,
who is every ekillfnll machinist, proceed*
ed to stop it. The pipe was rather an
old one. Ia stopping the leak,
which was through a very minute aper-
tnre, a damp was applied to the pipe.
The extra pressure of the tightning blits
used in applying it, together with the
great force confined in the pipe caused
it to split at a point very near where the
work wo3 gciog on and a consequent
very rapid escape of.the confined gas. Mr.
Johnson who is very familiar with tho
machinery and on a former occasion had
his eyes nearly put ont by the ammonia
gas retired precipitately. Mr. Henry F.
W. Hibner and Mr. John Birch, both of
whom arc employed at tho w. ke,
were standing near by looking at
tbe work and received a portion
of tho escaping ga3 in their eyes. So
rapid was the discharge that although
they retired as rapidly as possible, before
they conld escape, were enveloped in the
pungent gas, it taking its most powerful
effect in their eyes.
Nothing conld be done until the gas
had exhausted itself and every ono con
nected with tho works were forced to re
tire, and so powerful was the odcr that it
was at least a half hour before the gas had
sufficiently subsided to allow tho em
ployes to re-enter the building.
The atmosphere was scented sronnd
the building fer several hundred yard.'.
Tne damage to tho works is small, the
principal loss bring tbe escape of about
two hundred gallons of ammonia gu>, and
tbe catting off temporarily of one half of
Ihe capacity of tho works. It i3 not now
known wbather Mr. J-jknit >n will repair
immediately and resume manufacturing
to the full extent.
Tne injuries to Mr. Hibnet’d eyes are
quite severe end paiefat, not so tfcuch so,
however, as those of Mr. Birch, and
some fears are entertained that his eye
sight xasy be considerably impaired. We
hope both gsntlsmen may soon recover
withont any deleterious effects.
Mr. J. H. Hodges, of the Irwinton
Southerner and Appeal, is in the city
