a scheme to lease the Macon A Bruns
wick R. R. to a company with whom tho
committee of said R. R. is now in com-

three yeard a road from Macon to
Atlanta, east of the river, on pain of
forfeiture of their lease oa non perform
ance of their contract, and if tbe con-
t:act to construct said line from Macau
to Atlanta id fully complied with, tho
company of lessees shall have the refusal
of tbe road at a cost of $1,125,000. The
board of trade of this city have passed
resolutions favoring the project. It will
help Micoo. Tho leasees are willing to
pay $1,000,000. Tne committee demand
$1,125,000 which will no doubt be given
oy them rather than loose the trade.

PERSONAL.
The proprietors of the Kimball House
allowed tbo use of their ball room, for a
complimentary hop in tumor of Miss Ba
con, daughter of Speaker Bacon.
In spite of the inolemenoy of the weath
er quite a large number of ladies and
gentlemen from all parts of the State, as
well as from Atlanta, were in attend
ance.
The hop was one of the ploassntost
and most agreeable wo ever attended.
The music wa3 most superior and the
interest of tba oocsion was greatly en
hanced by a fine display of electric light,
prodneing the ttf=c: first of sunlight then
of moonlight in tho darkened dancing
ball.
Atlanta was represented as nsual by
some of hor fairest dauahtets, while we
mention with special admiration the fol
lowing visiting ladies : Miss Mary Lon
Little of Talbotton, Miss Reese of Wash
ington, Miss Baoon (in whose honor thu
ball was given). Miss Georgia Traoey,
Miss Jc-bnson of Maoon, and Miss Mc
Carty of Madison.
The dancing was continued tilt a late
hour, when th a gay company dispersed,
equally pleased with eeob other and the
entertainment.
The yoneg ladles from Macon attracted
much well deserved admiration for their
fine personal appearance, as well as their
sweet and womanly deportment.

Struck by Lightning.
Halifax, N- C.. July 26 —On Thurs
day the house of Richard Haden at Mid
dletown, Gaiseboro ooaDty, was struck
by lightning and completely wrecked,
Mrs. Haden was instantly killed. Mrs.
John Mann, who happened to be in the
honse, was struck and rendered insensi
ble. Hopes are entertained of ber re
covery. Mr. Haden and a number of
children escaped without injury.

Yellow Favor ia Hew York.
New York, July 26.—The death by
yellow fever of Mrs. BrennaD, late of
Memphis, and two eoseB eent to quaran
tine, have created a little uneasiness in
this community, and some of the morning
papers are calling for a rigid quarantine
law on the land side.
Mrs. Brennan came here from Mem
phis last Tuesday with two others sud
took a room in a tenement house on 109th
street where five other families are living.
Mrs. Brennan became so ill on Thursday
night that her friends sent for a pbjeic:an
who called without suspicion of the ma
ture of ilie disease. A brief examination
satisfied him ehe wa3 suffering from yel
low Lver. The inmates then admitted
that they were refugees from Memphis.

Mrs. Brennan died yesterday morning
and her body was hastily buried.
Mr. F.'.z and his wife were apparently

members of his family to quarantine.
There was considerable excitement last
night in the vicinity where the death oc

of the city.

schemes in railway, banking and land

collapsed. Its voluntary liquidation has
been long urged by the snareholders of
the bank.

Trie Fever Epidemic at Memphis

Memphis, July 25.—At a meeting of
citizens this morning, a Committee of
Safety was appointed, from whose mem
bers the following Execntive Committee
was chosen: D. T. Porter, President and
ex-officio Chairman, Dr. R. W. Mitchell,
Joe Johnson, A. S. Levermore, W. W.
Thatcher, J. S. ✓Priestidge, Rev. W. E.
Boggs, S. W. Speers.
Oa motion of Dr. Mitchell, it wa3 re
solved to take a census of the city, as
a basis on which to calculate the necessi
ties of those remaining. A petition from
the citizens of 'YVillbar Station, on the
Paducah Railroad, at which it is proposed
to erect the camp, protesting against tho
scheme was read and referred to the ex
ecutive Committee.
Oae new case of fever is reported to
day, and two deaths occurred—Miss
Lizzie Meath, and Ed. Flatley. The
weather damp and disagreeable. Tho
Board of Health will to-morrow, doubt
ie-rs, declare tho fever epidemic.
New York, July 26.—Tne names of
the Memphis refugees taken to the quar-
altine hospital last night are Micuael,
Bridget, Mary and John Corvette. The
brother of Mrs. Brennsn, who died, who
was also of tho party, cannot be found
and it is supposed he left his family to
escape being sent to the hospital.
Robert Rhiud, second mate of the British
steamer Alnwich Castle, from- Havana,
was taken to tbe hospital to day and ia
down with tho fever. In addition to the
above there are now six fever patients in
the hospital.
Washington, July 26—The National
Board of Health received a dispatch from
Shelbyville, Tennessee, this morning
stating that Rev. B. F. Feller, died at
“2 o'clock last night. Tauro is no other
cases at Shelbyville.

Trenton, N. J., July 2G.—The Court
of Errors and Appeals this morning re
versed the decision of Justice Knapp of
tho Supreme Court in tho Smith-Bsunett
case. Chief Justice Beasley read an elab'
orate opihioa, reviewing the whole case,
and cams to the conclusion that tbe
charge of tho judge oa the trial was a
misdirection of testimony. Four of iho
judges voted for the reversal, oa the
ground that the charge in reference to
tho letter wa3 erroneous. This reversal
makes the trial and its results of no effect.

forgeries upoa'a firm in New Yotk. The
evidesce against him was furnished by
tbo Liverpool polioe, the prisoner having
admitted tbs charge when arrested on
board the steamer Wyoming. He was
remanded for a week to await additional |
